आदिमत्त्वमिदं प्रोक्तमेतस्य कलनस्य यत् ।
परस्मादद्वितीयं तत्त्वद्बोधाय न वास्तवम् ॥ १ ॥

Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: The assertion that this mentation (kalana) has a beginning (ādimattva) is declared (prokta) for your comprehension. However, that (having a beginning) is not truly real (vāstava), because (yat) this mentation (kalana) is in fact non-dual (advitīya) with the Supreme (Brahman).
