ṛṣirāsīnmahāvīryaḥ kuṇirgārgyo mahāyaśāḥ ,
sa taptvā vipulaṁ rājaṁstapo vai tapatāṁ varaḥ ,
mānasīṁ sa sutāṁ subhrūṁ samutpāditavānvibhuḥ.

vaiśampāyana uvāca rājan [purā] mahāvīryaḥ gārgyaḥ mahāyaśāḥ kuṇiḥ ṛṣiḥ āsīt.
saḥ vibhuḥ tapatām varaḥ vai vipulam tapas taptvā mānasīm su-bhrūm sutām saḥ sam-utpāditavān.

Vaiśampāyana said: 'O King, there was once a greatly powerful and highly renowned sage named Kuṇi, belonging to the Garga lineage. That mighty sage, indeed the foremost among those who perform penance (tapas), after practicing extensive penance (tapas), mentally created a beautiful-browed daughter.'
