महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-12, chapter-89, verse-19

आपद्येव तु याचेरन्येषां नास्ति परिग्रहः ।
दातव्यं धर्मतस्तेभ्यस्त्वनुक्रोशाद्दयार्थिना ॥१९॥
19. āpadyeva tu yāceranyeṣāṁ nāsti parigrahaḥ ,
dātavyaṁ dharmatastebhyastvanukrośāddayārthinā.

dātavyam dharmataḥ tebhyaḥ tu anukrośāt dayārthinā

19. Others should beg only in times of distress (āpad); they have no means of acquiring possessions (parigraha) from others. Therefore, it should be given to them righteously (dharmataḥ), out of compassion (anukrośa), by one who desires mercy (dayārthin).
