वाल्मीकि-रामायणम्       vālmīki-rāmāyaṇam - book-3, chapter-28, verse-7

न चिरं पापकर्माणः क्रूरा लोकजुगुप्सिताः ।
ऐश्वर्यं प्राप्य तिष्ठन्ति शीर्णमूला इव द्रुमाः ॥७॥
7. na ciraṃ pāpakarmāṇaḥ krūrā lokajugupsitāḥ ,
aiśvaryaṃ prāpya tiṣṭhanti śīrṇamūlā iva drumāḥ.

7. Those who commit evil deeds (karma), who are cruel and scorned by people, do not long retain their power (aiśvarya) after attaining it, just like trees whose roots have withered.
