मार्कण्डेय-पुराणम्       mārkaṇḍeya-purāṇam - chapter-5, verse-8

वधाय चात्मनो दृष्ट्वा वृत्रं शक्रो महासुरम् ।
प्रेषयामास सप्तर्षोन् सन्धिमिच्छन् भयातुरः ॥८॥
8. vadhāya cātmano dṛṣṭvā vṛtraṃ śakro mahāsuram .
preṣayāmāsa saptarṣon sandhimicchan bhayāturaḥ.
8. vadhāya ca ātmanaḥ dṛṣṭvā vṛtram śakraḥ mahāsuram
preṣayāmāsa saptarṣīn sandhim icchan bhayāturaḥ
8. And Indra, seeing the great asura Vṛtra as a threat to his own existence (ātman), distressed by fear, dispatched the seven sages, seeking a truce.
