महाभारतः mahābhārataḥ - book-8, chapter-13, verse-24

न चेत्परित्रास्य इमाञ्जनान्भयाद्द्विषद्भिरेवं बलिभिः प्रपीडितान् ।
तथाभविष्यद्द्विषतां प्रमोदनं यथा हतेष्वेष्विह नोऽरिषु त्वया ॥२४॥

tathā abhaviṣyat dviṣatām pramodanam
yathā hateṣu eṣu iha naḥ ariṣu tvayā

24. cet aham imān janān,

24. "If I were not to protect these people, who are thus oppressed by powerful enemies, from fear, then it would be a source of delight for our enemies, just as it is for us when these enemies are killed here by you."
