महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-1, chapter-202, verse-25

निवृत्तपितृकार्यं च निर्वषट्कारमङ्गलम् ।
जगत्प्रतिभयाकारं दुष्प्रेक्ष्यमभवत्तदा ॥२५॥
25. nivṛttapitṛkāryaṁ ca nirvaṣaṭkāramaṅgalam ,
jagatpratibhayākāraṁ duṣprekṣyamabhavattadā.

25. Rites for ancestors (pitṛkārya) had ceased, and it was devoid of 'vaṣaṭkāra' offerings and auspicious ceremonies. Then the world became terrifying in form and ghastly to behold.
