महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-5, chapter-109, verse-24

एवमेषा द्विजश्रेष्ठ गुणैरन्यैर्दिगुत्तरा ।
उत्तरेति परिख्याता सर्वकर्मसु चोत्तरा ॥२४॥
24. evameṣā dvijaśreṣṭha guṇairanyairdiguttarā ,
uttareti parikhyātā sarvakarmasu cottarā.
24. evam eṣā dvijaśreṣṭha guṇaiḥ anyaiḥ diguttarā
uttarā iti parikhyātā sarvakarmasu ca uttarā
24. In this manner, O best among the twice-born (dvijaśreṣṭha), this Northern direction is renowned by its other qualities and is superior (uttarā) in all endeavors.
