वाल्मीकि-रामायणम्       vālmīki-rāmāyaṇam - book-2, chapter-61, verse-23

अहो तम इवेदं स्यान्न प्रज्ञायेत किं चन ।
राजा चेन्न भवेंल् लोके विभजन् साध्वसाधुनी ॥२३॥
23. aho tama ivedaṃ syānna prajñāyeta kiṃ cana ,
rājā cenna bhaveṃl loke vibhajan sādhvasādhunī.
23. aho tamaḥ iva idam syāt na prajñāyeta kim cana
rājā cet na bhavet loke vibhajan sādhv-asādhunī
23. aho rājā cet loke sādhv-asādhunī vibhajan na
bhavet idam tamaḥ iva syāt kim cana na prajñāyeta
23. Alas, it would be as if darkness (tamas) prevailed, and nothing at all would be discernible, if there were no king in the world to distinguish between the good and the bad.
