वाल्मीकि-रामायणम्       vālmīki-rāmāyaṇam - book-1, chapter-17, verse-17

लक्ष्मणो लक्ष्मिसंपन्नो बहिःप्राण इवापरः ।
न च तेन विना निद्रां लभते पुरुषोत्तमः ।
मृष्टमन्नमुपानीतमश्नाति न हि तं विना ॥१७॥
17. lakṣmaṇo lakṣmisaṃpanno bahiḥprāṇa ivāparaḥ ,
na ca tena vinā nidrāṃ labhate puruṣottamaḥ ,
mṛṣṭamannamupānītamaśnāti na hi taṃ vinā.
17. lakṣmaṇaḥ lakṣmīsampannaḥ bahiḥprāṇaḥ
iva aparaḥ na ca tena vinā nidrām
labhate puruṣottamaḥ mṛṣṭam
annam upanītam aśnāti na hi tam vinā

17. Lakshmana, endowed with auspicious signs, was like another external life-breath. And without him, Rama, the best among men (puruṣa), would not obtain sleep. Indeed, he would not eat delicious food even if it were brought to him, without him.
