गारुडं च महाव्यूहं चक्रे शांतनवस्तदा ।
पुत्राणां ते जयाकाङ्क्षी भीष्मः कुरुपितामहः ॥२॥

2. gāruḍaṁ ca mahāvyūhaṁ cakre śāṁtanavastadā ,
putrāṇāṁ te jayākāṅkṣī bhīṣmaḥ kurupitāmahaḥ.

2. And Bhīṣma, the Kuru patriarch (kurupitāmaha), son of Śāntanu, desiring victory for your sons, then formed the great eagle-shaped (gāruḍa) battle formation (vyūha).
