वाल्मीकि-रामायणम्       vālmīki-rāmāyaṇam - book-7, chapter-76, verse-4

पूर्वं सौहृदबद्धो ऽस्मि वृत्रस्य सुमहात्मनः ।
तेन युष्मत् प्रियार्थं वै नाहं हन्मि महासुरम् ॥४॥
4. pūrvaṃ sauhṛdabaddho'smi vṛtrasya sumahātmanaḥ ,
tena yuṣmat priyārthaṃ vai nāhaṃ hanmi mahāsuram.
4. pūrvam sauhṛdabaddhaḥ asmi vṛtrasya sumahātmanaḥ
tena yuṣmat priyārtham vai na aham hanmi mahāsuram
4. I was formerly bound by friendship with that mighty Vṛtra. Therefore, for your welfare, I certainly will not kill the great (asura).
