असुरैर्निर्जिता देवा निरुत्साहाश्च ते कृताः ।

The gods were defeated by the asuras and rendered devoid of enthusiasm. All their Vedic rituals (yajña) were seized, as were the svadhā offerings intended for the ancestors.
