महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-12, chapter-75, verse-7

तत उग्रं तपस्तप्त्वा वसिष्ठो ब्रह्मवित्तमः ।
रक्षांस्यपावधीत्तत्र पन्थानं चाप्यविन्दत ॥७॥
7. tata ugraṁ tapastaptvā vasiṣṭho brahmavittamaḥ ,
rakṣāṁsyapāvadhīttatra panthānaṁ cāpyavindata.

7. Thereafter, Vasiṣṭha, who was the foremost among those who know Brahman (brahman), having performed intense asceticism (tapas), destroyed the Rākṣasas there and also discovered the path.
