महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-5, chapter-17, verse-15

ध्वंस पाप परिभ्रष्टः क्षीणपुण्यो महीतलम् ।
दश वर्षसहस्राणि सर्परूपधरो महान् ।
विचरिष्यसि पूर्णेषु पुनः स्वर्गमवाप्स्यसि ॥१५॥
15. dhvaṁsa pāpa paribhraṣṭaḥ kṣīṇapuṇyo mahītalam ,
daśa varṣasahasrāṇi sarparūpadharo mahān ,
vicariṣyasi pūrṇeṣu punaḥ svargamavāpsyasi.

15. Perish, O sinful one! You will fall to the surface of the earth, your merit (puṇya) completely exhausted. For ten thousand years (varṣasahasra) you will roam, taking on the form of a great serpent. After these years are completed, you will again attain heaven (svarga).
