Vaiśampāyana said: When Bhishma retreated, abandoning the forefront of the battle, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana), that great-souled (mahātmā) warrior, himself raised his banner, roaring loudly, and directly confronted Arjuna.
