Then, the brahmin (dvijaḥ), having an equal mind (sama-matiḥ), observed that the king's income and expenditure (āya-vyayau) were balanced (samau). He concluded that taking any wealth (upādānāt) in any manner (sarvathā) would certainly cause distress (pīḍām) to living beings (prāṇinām).
