As long as the ultimate knowable (jñeyam) has not been fully realized, so long does dispassion (aratiḥ) towards sense objects (viṣayeṣu) not arise in a living being (jantoḥ), just like a creeper (latā) cannot flourish in a desert (marubhūmau).
