Atonement (niṣkṛti) has been prescribed by the virtuous for a killer of a Brahmin (brahmahan), for a drunkard, for a thief, and for one who has broken vows. However, for an ungrateful person (kṛtaghna), there is no atonement (niṣkṛti).
