वाल्मीकि-रामायणम्       vālmīki-rāmāyaṇam - book-1, chapter-2, verse-40

तस्य बुद्धिरियं जाता वाल्मीकेर्भावितात्मनः ।
कृत्स्नं रामायणं काव्यमीदृशैः करवाण्यहम् ॥४०॥
40. tasya buddhiriyaṃ jātā vālmīkerbhāvitātmanaḥ ,
kṛtsnaṃ rāmāyaṇaṃ kāvyamīdṛśaiḥ karavāṇyaham.
40. tasya buddhiḥ iyam jātā vālmīkeḥ bhāvitātmanaḥ
kṛtsnam rāmāyaṇam kāvyam īdṛśaiḥ karavāṇi aham
40. bhāvitātmanaḥ vālmīkeḥ tasya iyam buddhiḥ jātā
(yat) aham īdṛśaiḥ kṛtsnam rāmāyaṇam kāvyam karavāṇi
40. This thought arose in Valmiki, whose spirit (ātman) was pure: "I shall compose the entire epic Rāmāyaṇa with such verses."
