उवाच प्रहसन्वाक्यं स्मितपूर्वमिदं तदा ॥१॥

Sañjaya said: Having heard Karṇa's words, Keśava, the slayer of hostile heroes, then, smiling gently (prahasan), spoke these words that were preceded by a smile (smitapūrvam).
