महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-4, chapter-57, verse-8

छन्नमायोधनं सर्वं शरीरैर्गतचेतसाम् ।
गजाश्वसादिभिस्तत्र शितबाणात्तजीवितैः ॥८॥
8. channamāyodhanaṁ sarvaṁ śarīrairgatacetasām ,
gajāśvasādibhistatra śitabāṇāttajīvitaiḥ.

8. The entire battlefield was covered there with the bodies of those whose consciousness had departed, and also by elephants, horses, and their riders, whose lives had been taken by sharp arrows.
