महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-2, chapter-55, verse-10

त्यजेत्कुलार्थे पुरुषं ग्रामस्यार्थे कुलं त्यजेत् ।
ग्रामं जनपदस्यार्थे आत्मार्थे पृथिवीं त्यजेत् ॥१०॥
10. tyajetkulārthe puruṣaṁ grāmasyārthe kulaṁ tyajet ,
grāmaṁ janapadasyārthe ātmārthe pṛthivīṁ tyajet.
10. tyajet kulārthe puruṣam grāmasya arthe kulam tyajet
grāmam janapadasya arthe ātman arthe pṛthivīm tyajet
10. One should sacrifice an individual (puruṣa) for the sake of the family. One should abandon the family for the sake of the village. One should give up the village for the sake of the district. For the sake of the self (ātman), one should renounce the entire world.
