महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-13, chapter-92, verse-16

जलं प्रतरमाणश्च कीर्तयेत पितामहान् ।
नदीमासाद्य कुर्वीत पितॄणां पिण्डतर्पणम् ॥१६॥
16. jalaṁ prataramāṇaśca kīrtayeta pitāmahān ,
nadīmāsādya kurvīta pitṝṇāṁ piṇḍatarpaṇam.

16. One who is crossing water should remember his paternal ancestors. Having reached a river, one should perform the ritual of offering rice balls and water libations for the ancestors (pitṛ).
