महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-13, chapter-66, verse-8

अन्ने दत्ते नरेणेह प्राणा दत्ता भवन्त्युत ।
प्राणदानाद्धि परमं न दानमिह विद्यते ॥८॥
8. anne datte nareṇeha prāṇā dattā bhavantyuta ,
prāṇadānāddhi paramaṁ na dānamiha vidyate.
8. anne datte nareṇa iha prāṇāḥ dattāḥ bhavanti
uta | prāṇadānāt hi paramam na dānam iha vidyate
8. anne datte nareṇa iha prāṇāḥ dattāḥ uta bhavanti
hi prāṇadānāt paramam dānam iha na vidyate
8. Giving food to a person in this world is indeed giving life. For, truly, no gift here is greater than the gift of life (prāṇa).
