महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-13, chapter-66, verse-6

अन्नाद्बलं च तेजश्च प्राणिनां वर्धते सदा ।
अन्नदानमतस्तस्माच्छ्रेष्ठमाह प्रजापतिः ॥६॥
6. annādbalaṁ ca tejaśca prāṇināṁ vardhate sadā ,
annadānamatastasmācchreṣṭhamāha prajāpatiḥ.
6. annāt balam ca tejaḥ ca prāṇinām vardhate sadā
| annadānam ataḥ tasmāt śreṣṭham āha prajāpatiḥ
6. annāt prāṇinām balam ca tejaḥ ca sadā vardhate
ataḥ tasmāt prajāpatiḥ annadānam śreṣṭham āha
6. From food, the strength and vigor of living beings always increase. Therefore, Prajapati declares the giving of food (annadāna) to be the best (gift).
