महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-1, chapter-19, verse-6

पातालज्वलनावासमसुराणां च बन्धनम् ।
भयंकरं च सत्त्वानां पयसां निधिमर्णवम् ॥६॥
6. pātālajvalanāvāsamasurāṇāṁ ca bandhanam ,
bhayaṁkaraṁ ca sattvānāṁ payasāṁ nidhimarṇavam.
6. pātālajvalanāvāsam asurāṇām ca bandhanam
bhayaṃkaram ca sattvānām payasām nidhim arṇavam
6. (They saw the ocean as) the dwelling of the fires of Pātāla (the underworld), and the prison for asuras, and a terrifying place for (many) creatures, a great reservoir of waters, truly an ocean.
