मनुरुवाच ।
यावद्विषयभोगाशा जीवाख्या तावदात्मनः ।
अविवेकेन संपन्ना साप्याशा हि न वस्तुतः ॥ १ ॥

yāvadviṣayabhogāśā jīvākhyā tāvadātmanaḥ ,
avivekena saṃpannā sāpyāśā hi na vastutaḥ 1

Manu said: "As long as there exists for the self (ātman) the desire for the enjoyment of sense objects – a desire that is referred to as the living entity (`jīva-ākhyā`) – for that long, this desire (āśā) is present due to a lack of discrimination (aviveka), and not, in fact, in reality."
