योगवासिष्ठः       yogavāsiṣṭhaḥ - book-7, chapter-16, verse-8

अहंभावनमेवोच्चैर्बीजं दुःखाख्यशाल्मलेः ।
ममेदं तद्वदादीति शाखाप्रसरकारणम् ॥ ८ ॥
ahaṃbhāvanamevoccairbījaṃ duḥkhākhyaśālmaleḥ ,
mamedaṃ tadvadādīti śākhāprasarakāraṇam 8
8. ahaṃbhāvanam eva uccaiḥ bījam duḥkha ākhya śālmaleḥ
mama idam tadvat ādi iti śākhāprasārakāraṇam
8. ahaṃbhāvanam eva uccaiḥ duḥkhākhyaśālmaleḥ bījam
tadvat mama idam ādi iti śākhāprasārakāraṇam
8. The strong sense of ego (ahaṅkāra) is precisely the seed of the śālmalī tree of suffering. Similarly, the thought 'this is mine,' and so on, is the cause for the spreading of its branches.
