महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-12, chapter-85, verse-7

दानमेव हि सर्वत्र सान्त्वेनानभिजल्पितम् ।
न प्रीणयति भूतानि निर्व्यञ्जनमिवाशनम् ॥७॥
7. dānameva hi sarvatra sāntvenānabhijalpitam ,
na prīṇayati bhūtāni nirvyañjanamivāśanam.

na prīṇayati bhūtāni nir-vyañjanam iva aśanam
7. hi sarvatra sāntvena anabhijalpitam dānam eva bhūtāni na prīṇayati,

7. Indeed, charity (dāna) offered anywhere without conciliatory words (sāntva) does not please beings, just as food (aśana) without condiments (nirvyñjana) does not satisfy.
