महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-13, chapter-120, verse-9

व्यास उवाच ।
भो भो विप्रर्षभ श्रीमन्मा व्यथिष्ठाः कथंचन ।
शुभकृच्छुभयोनीषु पापकृत्पापयोनिषु ।
उपपद्यति धर्मज्ञ यथाधर्मं यथागमम् ॥९॥

bho bho viprarṣabha śrīmanmā vyathiṣṭhāḥ kathaṁcana ,
śubhakṛcchubhayonīṣu pāpakṛtpāpayoniṣu ,
upapadyati dharmajña yathādharmaṁ yathāgamam.

9. Vyāsa said: "O best of brahmins (viprarṣabha), O glorious one (śrīman)! Do not be distressed at all. O knower of natural law (dharmajña)! One who performs good deeds is born in good wombs, and one who performs evil deeds is born in evil wombs, precisely according to natural law (dharma) and tradition."
