ऋषिरुवाच ।
इत्याकर्ण्य वचो देव्याः स दूतोऽमर्षपूरितः ।
समाचष्ट समागम्य दैत्यराजाय विस्तरात् ॥१॥
1. ṛṣiruvāca .
ityākarṇya vaco devyāḥ sa dūto'marṣapūritaḥ .
samācaṣṭa samāgamya daityarājāya vistarāt.
1. ऋषिः उवाच इति आकर्ण्य वचः देव्याः स दूतः
अमर्षपूरितः समाचष्ट समागम्य दैत्यराजाय विस्तरात्
1. The Rishi said: Having thus heard the Goddess's words, that messenger, filled with indignation, approached the king of the demons and related everything in detail.
तस्य दूतस्य तद्वाक्यमाकर्ण्यासुरराट् ततः ।
सक्रोधः प्राह दैत्यानामधिपं धूम्रलोचनम् ॥२॥
2. tasya dūtasya tadvākyamākarṇyāsurarāṭ tataḥ .
sakrodhaḥ prāha daityānāmadhipaṃ dhūmralocanam.
2. तस्य दूतस्य तत् वाक्यम् आकर्ण्य असुरराट् ततः
सक्रोधः प्राह दैत्यानाम् अधिपम् धूम्रलोचनम्
2. Having heard that message from the messenger, the king of asuras (asurarāṭ) then, filled with anger, spoke to Dhūmralocana, the chief of the demons.
हे धूम्रलोचनाशु त्वं स्वसैन्यपरिवारितः ।
तामानय बलाद् दुष्टां केशाकर्षणविह्वलाम् ॥३॥
3. he dhūmralocanāśu tvaṃ svasainyaparivāritaḥ .
tāmānaya balād duṣṭāṃ keśākarṣaṇavihvalām.
3. हे धूम्रलोचन आशु त्वं स्वसैन्यपरिवारितः
ताम् आनय बलात् दुष्टाम् केशाकर्षणविह्वलाम्
3. O Dhūmralocana, you, surrounded by your own army, quickly bring that wicked woman by force, causing her distress by dragging her by her hair.
तत्परित्राणदः कश्चिद्यदि वोत्तिष्ठतेऽपरः ।
स हन्तव्योऽमरो वापि यक्षो गन्धर्व एव वा ॥४॥
4. tatparitrāṇadaḥ kaścidyadi vottiṣṭhate'paraḥ .
sa hantavyo'maro vāpi yakṣo gandharva eva vā.
4. tat paritrāṇa-daḥ kaścit yadi vā uttiṣṭhate aparaḥ
saḥ hantavyaḥ amaraḥ vā api yakṣaḥ gandharvaḥ eva vā
4. If anyone else, or anyone who provides him protection, rises up, that person must be killed, even if he is a god, a yakṣa, or a gandharva.
ऋषिरुवाच ।
तेनाज्ञप्तस्ततः शीघ्रं स दैत्यो धूम्रलोचनः ।
वृतः पष्ट्या सहस्राणामसुराणां द्रुतं ययो ॥५॥
5. ṛṣiruvāca .
tenājñaptastataḥ śīghraṃ sa daityo dhūmralocanaḥ .
vṛtaḥ paṣṭyā sahasrāṇāmasurāṇāṃ drutaṃ yayo.
5. ṛṣiḥ uvāca tena ājñaptaḥ tataḥ śīghram saḥ daityaḥ
dhūmralocanaḥ vṛtaḥ ṣaṣṭyā sahasrāṇām asurāṇām drutam yayau
5. The sage said: Then, that demon Dhumralochana, having been commanded by him (Śumbha), swiftly departed, accompanied by sixty thousand asuras.
स दृष्ट्वा तां ततो देवीं तुहिनाचलसंस्थिताम् ।
जगादोच्चैः प्रयाहीति मूलं शुम्भनिशुम्भयोः ॥६॥
6. sa dṛṣṭvā tāṃ tato devīṃ tuhinācalasaṃsthitām .
jagādoccaiḥ prayāhīti mūlaṃ śumbhaniśumbhayoḥ.
6. saḥ dṛṣṭvā tām tataḥ devīm tuhinācala-saṃsthitām
jagāda uccaiḥ prayāhi iti mūlam śumbha-niśumbhayoḥ
6. Then, having seen that Goddess situated on the snowy mountain (Himalayas), he (Dhumralochana) loudly said, 'Go to the abode of Śumbha and Niśumbha!'
न चेत्प्रीत्याद्य भवती मद्भर्तारमुपैष्यति ।
ततो बलान्नयाम्येष केशाकर्षणविह्वलाम् ॥७॥
7. na cetprītyādya bhavatī madbhartāramupaiṣyati .
tato balānnayāmyeṣa keśākarṣaṇavihvalām.
7. na cet prītyā adya bhavatī mat bhartāram upeṣyati
tataḥ balāt nayāmi eṣaḥ keśākarṣaṇa-vihvalām
7. If you, dear lady, do not willingly approach my master today, then I will take you by force, making you distressed by hair-pulling.
श्रीदेव्युवाच ।
दैत्येश्वरेण प्रहितो बलवान् बलसंवृतः ।
बलान्नयसि मामेवं ततः किं ते करोम्यहम् ॥८॥
8. śrīdevyuvāca .
daityeśvareṇa prahito balavān balasaṃvṛtaḥ .
balānnayasi māmevaṃ tataḥ kiṃ te karomyaham.
8. śrīdevī uvāca daityeśvareṇa prahitaḥ balavān balasaṃvṛtaḥ
balāt nayasi mām evam tataḥ kim te karomi aham
8. The revered Devi said: "You, mighty and accompanied by an army, have been sent by the lord of the demons. If you take me by force in this manner, then what can I do to you?"
ऋषिरुवाच ।
इत्युक्तः सोऽभ्यधावत्तामसुरो धूम्रलोचनः ।
हुङ्कारेणैव तं भस्म सा चकाराम्बिका ततः ॥९॥
9. ṛṣiruvāca .
ityuktaḥ so'bhyadhāvattāmasuro dhūmralocanaḥ .
huṅkāreṇaiva taṃ bhasma sā cakārāmbikā tataḥ.
9. ṛṣiḥ uvāca iti uktaḥ saḥ abhyadhāvat tam asuraḥ
dhūmralocanaḥ huṅkāreṇa eva tam bhasma sā cakāra ambikā tataḥ
9. The sage said: "Having been spoken to in this way, that demon Dhumralochana rushed forward. Then Ambika, with merely a roar, reduced him to ash."
अथ क्रुद्धं महासैन्यमसुराणां तथाम्बिका ।
ववर्ष सायकैस्तीक्ष्णैस्तथा शक्तिपरश्वधैः ॥१०॥
10. atha kruddhaṃ mahāsainyamasurāṇāṃ tathāmbikā .
vavarṣa sāyakaistīkṣṇaistathā śaktiparaśvadhaiḥ.
10. atha kruddham mahāsainyam asurāṇām tathā ambikā
vavarṣa sāyakaiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ tathā śaktiparaśvadhaiḥ
10. Then Ambika also rained down sharp arrows, and spears and battle-axes upon the enraged great army of the demons.
ततो धुतसटः कोपात् कृत्वा नादं सुभैरवम् ।
पपातासुरसेनायां सिंहो देव्याः स्ववाहनः ॥११॥
11. tato dhutasaṭaḥ kopāt kṛtvā nādaṃ subhairavam .
papātāsurasenāyāṃ siṃho devyāḥ svavāhanaḥ.
11. tataḥ dhutasaṭaḥ kopāt kṛtvā nādam subhairavam
papāta asurasenāyām siṃhaḥ devyāḥ svavāhanaḥ
11. Then, with its mane shaken due to anger, and having let out a very dreadful roar, the lion, the Devi's (devī) own mount, fell upon the demon army.
कांश्चित् करप्रहारेण दैत्यानास्येन चापरान् ।
आक्रम्य चाधरेणान्यान् स जघान महासुरान् ॥१२॥
12. kāṃścit karaprahāreṇa daityānāsyena cāparān .
ākramya cādhareṇānyān sa jaghāna mahāsurān.
12. kāṁścit karaprahāreṇa daityān āsyena ca aparān
ākramya ca adhareṇa anyān sa jaghāna mahāsurān
12. He killed some demons with a blow of his hand, others with his mouth, and still others by assailing them with his lower lip; thus, he struck down the great demons.
केषाञ्चित् पाटयामास नखैः कोष्ठानि केसरी ।
तथा तलप्रिहारेण शिरांसि कृतवान् पृथक् ॥१३॥
13. keṣāñcit pāṭayāmāsa nakhaiḥ koṣṭhāni kesarī .
tathā talaprihāreṇa śirāṃsi kṛtavān pṛthak.
13. keṣāñcit pāṭayāmāsa nakhaiḥ koṣṭhāni kesarī
tathā talaprahāreṇa śirāṁsi kṛtavān pṛthak
13. The lion (kesarī) tore open the bellies of some (demons) with his claws. Likewise, he severed heads with a blow of his paw.
विच्छिन्नबाहुशिरसः सृतास्तेन तथापरे ।
पपौ च रुधिरं कोष्ठादन्येषां धुतकेसरः ॥१४॥
14. vicchinnabāhuśirasaḥ sṛtāstena tathāpare .
papau ca rudhiraṃ koṣṭhādanyeṣāṃ dhutakesaraḥ.
14. vicchinnabāhuśirasaḥ sṛtāḥ tena tathā apare
papau ca rudhiraṁ koṣṭhāt anyeṣāṁ dhutakesaraḥ
14. And others, whose arms and heads were severed by him, fell down. With a shaken mane, he drank the blood from the bellies of other demons.
क्षणेन तद्बलं सर्वं क्षयं नीतं महात्मना ।
तेन केसरिणा देव्या वाहनेनातिकोपिना ॥१५॥
15. kṣaṇena tadbalaṃ sarvaṃ kṣayaṃ nītaṃ mahātmanā .
tena kesariṇā devyā vāhanenātikopinā.
15. kṣaṇena tat balaṁ sarvaṁ kṣayaṁ nītaṁ mahātmanā
tena kesariṇā devyā vāhanena atikopinā
15. In an instant, that entire army was brought to destruction by that great-souled one, the lion (kesarī), the Goddess's exceedingly furious mount.
श्रुत्वा तमसुरं देव्या निहतं धूम्रलोचनम् ।
बलं च क्षयितं कृत्स्त्रं देवीकेसरिणा ततः ॥१६॥
16. śrutvā tamasuraṃ devyā nihataṃ dhūmralocanam .
balaṃ ca kṣayitaṃ kṛtstraṃ devīkesariṇā tataḥ.
16. śrutvā tam asuraṃ devyā nihatam dhūmralocanam
balam ca kṣayitaṃ kṛtsnam devīkesariṇā tataḥ
16. Then, having heard that the demon Dhūmralocana had been killed by the Goddess, and that his entire army had been destroyed by the lion of the Goddess,
चुकोप दैत्याधिपतिः शुम्भः प्रस्फुरिताधरः ।
आज्ञापयामास च तौ चण्डमुण्डौ महासुरौ ॥१७॥
17. cukopa daityādhipatiḥ śumbhaḥ prasphuritādharaḥ .
ājñāpayāmāsa ca tau caṇḍamuṇḍau mahāsurau.
17. cukopa daityādhipatiḥ śumbhaḥ prasphuritādharaḥ
ājñāpayāmāsa ca tau caṇḍamuṇḍau mahāsurau
17. And Śumbha, the lord of the demons, his lips trembling, became angry. He then ordered those two great demons, Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa:
हे चण्ड हे मुण्ड बलैर्बहुभिः परिवारितौ ।
तत्र गच्छत गत्वा च सा समानीयतां लघु ॥१८॥
18. he caṇḍa he muṇḍa balairbahubhiḥ parivāritau .
tatra gacchata gatvā ca sā samānīyatāṃ laghu.
18. he caṇḍa he muṇḍa balaiḥ bahubhiḥ parivāritau
tatra gacchata gatvā ca sā samānīyatām laghu
18. He said, 'O Caṇḍa, O Muṇḍa, accompanied by many forces, go there! And after going, let her be brought quickly!'
केशेष्वाकृष्य बद्ध्वा वा यदि वः संशयो युधि ।
तदाशेषायुधैः सर्वैरसुरैर्विनिहन्यताम् ॥१९॥
19. keśeṣvākṛṣya baddhvā vā yadi vaḥ saṃśayo yudhi .
tadāśeṣāyudhaiḥ sarvairasurairvinihanyatām.
19. keśeṣu ākṛṣya baddhvā vā yadi vaḥ saṃśayaḥ yudhi
tadā aśeṣāyudhaiḥ sarvaiḥ asuraiḥ vinihanyatām
19. Having dragged her by the hair or having bound her, bring her. If you have any doubt (saṃśaya) in battle, then let her be killed by all the demons with all their weapons.
तस्यां हतायां दुष्टायां सिंहे च विनिपातिते ।
शीघ्रमागम्यतां बद्ध्वा गृहीत्वा तामथाम्बिकाम् ॥२०॥
20. tasyāṃ hatāyāṃ duṣṭāyāṃ siṃhe ca vinipātite .
śīghramāgamyatāṃ baddhvā gṛhītvā tāmathāmbikām.
20. tasyām hatāyām duṣṭāyām siṃhe ca vinipātite
śīghram āgamyatām baddhvā gṛhītvā tām atha ambikām
20. When that wicked one has been slain and the lion has been struck down, you must quickly come back, having bound and seized that Ambikā (the Goddess).
