ऋषिरुवाच ।
चण्डे च निहते दैत्ये मुण्डे च विनिपातिते ।
बहुलेषु च सैन्येषु क्षयितेष्वसुरेश्वरः ॥१॥
1. ṛṣiruvāca .

1. The sage said: When Chaṇḍa, the demon, was slain, and Muṇḍa was struck down, and when the numerous armies were destroyed, the lord of demons...
ततः कोपपराधीनचेताः शुम्भः प्रतापवान् ।
उद्योगं सर्वसैन्यानां दैत्यानामादिदेश ह ॥२॥
2. tataḥ kopaparādhīnacetāḥ śumbhaḥ pratāpavān .
udyogaṃ sarvasainyānāṃ daityānāmādideśa ha.
2. tataḥ kopa-parādhīna-cetāḥ śumbhaḥ pratāpavān
udyogaṃ sarva-sainyānāṃ daityānām ādideśa ha
2. Thereupon, the powerful Shumbha, whose mind was consumed by anger, commanded all the demon armies to prepare for battle.
अद्य सर्वबलैर्दैत्याः षडशीतिरुदायुधाः ।
कम्बूनां चतुरशीतिर्निर्यान्तु स्वबलैर्वृताः ॥३॥
3. adya sarvabalairdaityāḥ ṣaḍaśītirudāyudhāḥ .
kambūnāṃ caturaśītirniryāntu svabalairvṛtāḥ.
3. adya sarva-balaiḥ daityāḥ ṣaḍaśītiḥ udāyudhāḥ
kambūnām catur-aśītiḥ niryāntu sva-balaiḥ vṛtāḥ
3. Today, let eighty-six demon commanders, armed with uplifted weapons, and eighty-four commanders of the Kambus, accompanied by their own forces, sally forth.
कोटिवीर्याणि पञ्चाशदसुराणां कुलानि वै ।
शतं कुलानि धौम्राणां निर्गच्छन्तु ममाज्ञया ॥४॥
4. koṭivīryāṇi pañcāśadasurāṇāṃ kulāni vai .
śataṃ kulāni dhaumrāṇāṃ nirgacchantu mamājñayā.
4. koṭī-vīryāṇi pañcāśat asurāṇām kulāni vai śataṃ
kulāni dhaumrāṇām nirgacchantu mama ājñayā
4. Indeed, fifty clans of the Koṭīvīryas demons, and a hundred clans of the Dhaumras, let them sally forth according to my command.
कालका दौर्हृदा मौर्याः कालकेयास्तथासुराः ।
युद्धाय सज्जा निर्यान्तु आज्ञया त्वरिता मम ॥५॥
5. kālakā daurhṛdā mauryāḥ kālakeyāstathāsurāḥ .
yuddhāya sajjā niryāntu ājñayā tvaritā mama.
5. kālakāḥ daurhṛdāḥ mauryāḥ kālakeyāḥ tathā asurāḥ
yuddhāya sajjāḥ niryāntu ājñayā tvaritāḥ mama
5. The Kālakas, Daurhṛdas, Mauryas, and also the Kālakeya demons, ready for battle, let them swiftly sally forth by my command.
इत्याज्ञाप्यासुरपतिः शुम्भो भैरवशासनः ।
निर्जगाम महासैन्यसहस्रैर्बहुभिर्वृतः ॥६॥
6. ityājñāpyāsurapatiḥ śumbho bhairavaśāsanaḥ .
nirjagāma mahāsainyasahasrairbahubhirvṛtaḥ.
6. iti ājñāpya asurapatiḥ śumbhaḥ bhairavaśāsanaḥ
nirjagāma mahāsainyasahasraiḥ bahubhiḥ vṛtaḥ
6. Thus commanded, Shumbha, the lord of the asuras (demons) whose rule was terrifying, set forth, accompanied by many thousands of vast armies.
आयान्तं चण्डिका दृष्ट्वा तत्सैन्यमतिभिषणम् ।
ज्यास्वनैः पूरयामास धरणीगगनान्तरम् ॥७॥
7. āyāntaṃ caṇḍikā dṛṣṭvā tatsainyamatibhiṣaṇam .
jyāsvanaiḥ pūrayāmāsa dharaṇīgaganāntaram.
7. āyāntam caṇḍikā dṛṣṭvā tat sainyam atibhīṣaṇam
jyāsvanaiḥ pūrayāmāsa dharaṇīgaganāntaram
7. When Chandika saw that exceedingly terrifying army approaching, she filled the space between the earth and the sky with the twang of her bowstring.
स च सिंहो महानादमतीव कृतवान् नृप ।
घण्टास्वनेन तन्नादमम्बिका चाप्यबृंहयत् ॥८॥
8. sa ca siṃho mahānādamatīva kṛtavān nṛpa .
ghaṇṭāsvanena tannādamambikā cāpyabṛṃhayat.
8. saḥ ca siṃhaḥ mahānādam atīva kṛtavān nṛpa
ghaṇṭāsvanena tat nādam ambikā ca api abṛṃhayat
8. And that lion, O king, let out an exceedingly great roar. Ambika, too, amplified that roar with the sound of her bell.
धनुर्ज्यासिंहघण्टानां नादापूरितदिङ्मुखा ।
निनादैर्भोषणैः काली जिग्ये विस्तारितानना ॥९॥
9. dhanurjyāsiṃhaghaṇṭānāṃ nādāpūritadiṅmukhā .
ninādairbhoṣaṇaiḥ kālī jigye vistāritānanā.
9. dhanurjyāsiṃhaghaṇṭānām nādāpūritadiṅmukhā
ninādaiḥ bhoṣaṇaiḥ kālī jigye vistāritānanā
9. With her face wide open, Kali, who filled all directions with the combined sounds of her bowstring, her lion, and her bells, conquered through terrifying roars.
तं निनादमुपश्रुत्य दैत्यसैन्यैश्चतुर्दिशम् ।
देवी सिंहस्तथा काली सरोषैः परिवारिताः ॥१०॥
10. taṃ ninādamupaśrutya daityasainyaiścaturdiśam .
devī siṃhastathā kālī saroṣaiḥ parivāritāḥ.
10. tam ninādam upaśrutya daityasainyaiḥ caturdiśam
devī siṃhaḥ tathā kālī saroṣaiḥ parivāritāḥ
10. Having heard that roar, the Goddess, her lion, and Kāli were surrounded on all four sides by the enraged demon armies.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे भूप विनाशाय सुरद्विषाम् ।
भवायामरसिंहानामतिवीर्यबलान्विताः ॥११॥
11. etasminnantare bhūpa vināśāya suradviṣām .
bhavāyāmarasiṃhānāmativīryabalānvitāḥ.
11. etasmin antare bhūpa vināśāya suradviṣām
bhavāya amaraśiṃhānām ativīryabalānvitāḥ
11. O King, at that moment, for the destruction of the enemies of the gods and the prosperity of the great gods, came those (powers) endowed with immense valor and strength.
ब्रह्मेशगुहविष्णूनां तथेन्द्रस्य च शक्तयः ।
शरीरेभ्यो विनिष्क्रम्य तद्रूपैश्चण्डिकां ययुः ॥१२॥
12. brahmeśaguhaviṣṇūnāṃ tathendrasya ca śaktayaḥ .
śarīrebhyo viniṣkramya tadrūpaiścaṇḍikāṃ yayuḥ.
12. brahmeśaguhaviṣṇūnām tathā indrasya ca śaktayaḥ
śarīrebhyaḥ viniṣkramya tadrūpaiḥ caṇḍikām yayuḥ
12. The divine powers (śaktis) of Brahmā, Īśa (Śiva), Guha (Skanda), Viṣṇu, and Indra, too, emerged from their bodies and proceeded to Caṇḍikā, each manifesting in the form of its respective deity.
यस्य देवस्य यद्रूपं यथाभूषणवाहनम् ।
तद्वदेव हि तच्छक्तिरसुरान् योद्धुमाययौ ॥१३॥
13. yasya devasya yadrūpaṃ yathābhūṣaṇavāhanam .
tadvadeva hi tacchaktirasurān yoddhumāyayau.
13. yasya devasya yat rūpam yathābhūṣaṇavāhanam
tadvat eva hi tat śaktiḥ asurān yoddhum āyayau
13. Indeed, the power (śakti) of each deity came forth to fight the demons, manifesting in the exact form, with the same ornaments, and riding the same vehicle as its respective god.
हंसयुक्तविमानाग्रे साक्षसूत्रकमण्डलुः ।
आयाता ब्रह्मणः शक्तिर्ब्रह्माणी साभिधीयते ॥१४॥
14. haṃsayuktavimānāgre sākṣasūtrakamaṇḍaluḥ .
āyātā brahmaṇaḥ śaktirbrahmāṇī sābhidhīyate.
14. haṃsayuktavimānāgre sākṣasūtrakamaṇḍaluḥ
āyātā brahmaṇaḥ śaktiḥ brahmāṇī sā abhidhīyate
14. The power (śakti) of Brahmā, known as Brahmāṇī, arrived at the forefront of a swan-drawn celestial chariot, holding a rosary and a water pot.
माहेश्वरी वृषारूढा त्रिशूलवरधीरिणी ।
महाहिवलया प्राप्ता चन्द्रलेखाविभूषणा ॥१५॥
15. māheśvarī vṛṣārūḍhā triśūlavaradhīriṇī .
mahāhivalayā prāptā candralekhāvibhūṣaṇā.

mahāhivalayā prāptā candralekhāvibhūṣaṇā
15. Māheśvarī arrived, mounted on a bull, holding a superb trident, adorned with large snakes as bracelets, and embellished by a crescent moon.
कौमारी शक्तिहस्ता च मयूरवरवाहना ।
योद्धुमभ्याययौ दैत्यानम्बिका गुहरूपिणी ॥१६॥
16. kaumārī śaktihastā ca mayūravaravāhanā .
yoddhumabhyāyayau daityānambikā guharūpiṇī.
16. kaumārī śaktihastā ca mayūravaravāhanā
yoddhum abhyāyayau daityān ambikā guharūpiṇī
16. Kaumārī, holding a spear (śakti) in her hand, with the best peacock as her mount, and who is Ambikā in the form of Guha, came to fight the demons.
तथैव वैष्णावी शक्तिर्गरुडोपरि संस्थिता ।
शङ्खचक्रगदाशार्ङ्गखड्गहस्ताभ्युपाययौ ॥१७॥
17. tathaiva vaiṣṇāvī śaktirgaruḍopari saṃsthitā .
śaṅkhacakragadāśārṅgakhaḍgahastābhyupāyayau.
17. tathā eva vaiṣṇāvī śaktiḥ garuḍa upari saṃsthitā
śaṅkhacakragadāśārṅgakhadgahastā abhyupāyayau
17. Similarly, the power (śakti) Vaiṣṇavī, seated upon Garuḍa, arrived with a conch, discus, mace, the Śārṅga bow, and a sword in her hands.
जज्ञे वाराहमतुलं रूपं या बिभ्रती हरेः ।
शक्तिः साप्यायौ तत्र वाराहीं बिभ्रती तनुम् ॥१८॥
18. jajñe vārāhamatulaṃ rūpaṃ yā bibhratī hareḥ .
śaktiḥ sāpyāyau tatra vārāhīṃ bibhratī tanum.
18. jajñe vārāham atulam rūpam yā bibhratī hareḥ
śaktiḥ sā api āyau tatra vārāhīm bibhratī tanum
18. The (śakti) (divine power) of Hari (Vishnu), which bore an incomparable boar form, appeared. She also, in her emergence (āyau) there, bore the boar body.
नारसिंही नृसिंहस्य बिभ्रती सदृशं वपुः ।
प्राप्ता तत्र सटाक्षेपक्षिप्तनक्षत्रसंहतिः ॥१९॥
19. nārasiṃhī nṛsiṃhasya bibhratī sadṛśaṃ vapuḥ .
prāptā tatra saṭākṣepakṣiptanakṣatrasaṃhatiḥ.
19. nārasiṃhī nṛsiṃhasya bibhratī sadṛśam vapuḥ
prāptā tatra saṭākṣepakṣiptanakṣatrasaṃhatiḥ
19. The Narasimhi (śakti), bearing the similar form of Narasimha, appeared there, having scattered multitudes of stars with the shaking of her mane.
वज्रहस्ता तथैवैन्द्री गजराजोपरि स्थिता ।
प्राप्ता सहस्रनयना यथा शक्रस्तथैव सा ॥२०॥
20. vajrahastā tathaivaindrī gajarājopari sthitā .
prāptā sahasranayanā yathā śakrastathaiva sā.
20. vajrahastā tathā eva aindrī gajarāja upari sthitā
prāptā sahasranayanā yathā śakraḥ tathā eva sā
20. Similarly, the Indrī (śakti), thunderbolt-handed, standing upon the king of elephants, arrived. She was thousand-eyed, just like Indra himself.
ततः परिवृतस्ताभिरीशानो देवशक्तिभिः ।
हन्यन्तामसुराः शीघ्रं मम प्रीत्याऽह चण्डिकाम् ॥२१॥
21. tataḥ parivṛtastābhirīśāno devaśaktibhiḥ .
hanyantāmasurāḥ śīghraṃ mama prītyā'ha caṇḍikām.
21. tataḥ parivṛtaḥ tābhiḥ īśānaḥ devaśaktibhiḥ
hanyantām asurāḥ śīghram mama prītyā āha caṇḍikām
21. Then Īśāna, surrounded by those divine powers (śakti), said to Caṇḍikā: 'Let the asuras (demons) be quickly slain for my pleasure!'
ततो देवोशरीरात्तु विनिष्क्रान्तातिभीषणा ।
चण्डिकाशक्तिरत्युग्रा शिवाशतनिनादिनी ॥२२॥
22. tato devośarīrāttu viniṣkrāntātibhīṣaṇā .
caṇḍikāśaktiratyugrā śivāśataninādinī.
22. tataḥ devī-śarīrāt tu viniṣkrāntā ati-bhīṣaṇā
| caṇḍikā-śaktiḥ aty-ugrā śiva-śata-ninādinī
22. Then, from the body of the Goddess, emerged the extremely terrifying, exceedingly fierce power (śakti) of Caṇḍikā, whose roar was like that of a hundred jackals.
सा चाह धूम्रजटिलमीशानमपराजिता ।
दूत त्वं गच्छ भगवन् पार्श्वं शुम्भनिशुम्भयोः ॥२३॥
23. sā cāha dhūmrajaṭilamīśānamaparājitā .
dūta tvaṃ gaccha bhagavan pārśvaṃ śumbhaniśumbhayoḥ.
23. sā ca āha dhūmra-jaṭilam īśānam aparājitā | dūta
tvam gaccha bhagavan pārśvam śumbha-niśumbhayoḥ
23. And she, the unconquered one, said to Īśāna, who had smoky, matted hair: 'O messenger, O lord, you go to Śumbha and Niśumbha.'
ब्रूहि शुम्भं निशुम्भं च दानवावतिगर्वितौ ।
ये चान्ये दानवास्तत्र युद्धाय समुपस्थिताः ॥२४॥
24. brūhi śumbhaṃ niśumbhaṃ ca dānavāvatigarvitau .
ye cānye dānavāstatra yuddhāya samupasthitāḥ.
24. brūhi śumbham niśumbham ca dānavau ati-garvitau
| ye ca anye dānavāḥ tatra yuddhāya samupasthitāḥ
24. Tell Śumbha and Niśumbha, the two exceedingly arrogant demons, and also those other demons who are present there for battle.
त्रैलोक्यमिन्द्रो लभतां देवाः सन्तु हविर्भुजः ।
यूयं प्रयात पातालं यदि जीवितुमिच्छथ ॥२५॥
25. trailokyamindro labhatāṃ devāḥ santu havirbhujaḥ .
yūyaṃ prayāta pātālaṃ yadi jīvitumicchatha.
25. trai-lokyam indraḥ labhatām devāḥ santu havir-bhujaḥ
| yūyam prayāta pātālam yadi jīvitum icchatha
25. Let Indra reclaim the three worlds, and let the gods again partake in the oblations. You all, go to the netherworld if you wish to live.
बलावलेपादथ चेद्भवन्तो युद्धकाङ्क्षिणः ।
तदागच्छत तृप्यन्तु मच्छिवाः पिशितेन वः ॥२६॥
26. balāvalepādatha cedbhavanto yuddhakāṅkṣiṇaḥ .
tadāgacchata tṛpyantu macchivāḥ piśitena vaḥ.
26. balāvalepāt atha cet bhavantaḥ yuddhakāṅkṣiṇaḥ
tadā āgacchata tṛpyantu mat śivāḥ piśitena vaḥ
26. If, arrogant due to your strength, you are desirous of battle, then come here! Let my jackals be satisfied with your flesh.
यतो नियुक्तो दौत्येन तया देव्या शिवः स्वयम् ।
शिवदूतीति लोकेऽस्मिंमस्ततः सा ख्यातिमागता ॥२७॥
27. yato niyukto dautyena tayā devyā śivaḥ svayam .
śivadūtīti loke'smiṃmastataḥ sā khyātimāgatā.
27. yataḥ niyuktaḥ dautyena tayā devyā śivaḥ svayam
śivadūtī iti loke asmin tataḥ sā khyātim āgatā
27. Because Shiva (śiva) himself was appointed as a messenger by that Goddess, she therefore became known as Shivaduti in this world.
तेऽपि श्रुत्वा वचो देव्याः शर्वाख्यातं महासुराः ।
अमर्षापूरिता जग्मुर्यत्र कात्यायनी स्थिता ॥२८॥
28. te'pi śrutvā vaco devyāḥ śarvākhyātaṃ mahāsurāḥ .
amarṣāpūritā jagmuryatra kātyāyanī sthitā.
28. te api śrutvā vacaḥ devyāḥ śarva ākhyātam mahāsurāḥ
amarṣa āpūritāḥ jagmuḥ yatra kātyāyanī sthitā
28. Those great demons (asuras) also, having heard the words narrated by Shiva (śiva), became filled with indignation and went to where Katyayani was located.
ततः प्रथममेवाग्रे शरशक्त्यृष्टिवृष्टिभिः ।
ववर्षुरुद्धतामर्षास्तां देवीममरारयः ॥२९॥
29. tataḥ prathamamevāgre śaraśaktyṛṣṭivṛṣṭibhiḥ .
vavarṣuruddhatāmarṣāstāṃ devīmamarārayaḥ.
29. tataḥ prathamam eva agre śaraśakti ṛṣṭi vṛṣṭibhiḥ
vavarṣuḥ uddhatāmarṣāḥ tām devīm amara arayaḥ
29. Then, right at the forefront, those enemies of the gods (amarārayaḥ), full of intense indignation, rained down showers of arrows, spears, and javelins upon that Goddess.
सा च तान् प्रहितान् बाणाञ्छूलशक्तिपरश्वधान् ।
चिच्छेद लीलयाऽध्मातधनुर्मुक्तैर्महेषुभिः ॥३०॥
30. sā ca tān prahitān bāṇāñchūlaśaktiparaśvadhān .
ciccheda līlayā'dhmātadhanurmuktairmaheṣubhiḥ.
30. sā ca tān prahitān bāṇān śūlaśaktiparaśvadhān
ciccheda līlayā adhmātadhanurmuktaiḥ maheṣubhiḥ
30. And she effortlessly cut down those hurled arrows, spears, lances, and axes with great arrows released from her drawn bow.
तस्याग्रतस्तथा काली शूलपातविदारितान् ।
खट्वाङ्गपोथितांश्चारीन् कुर्वती व्यचरत्तदा ॥३१॥
31. tasyāgratastathā kālī śūlapātavidāritān .
khaṭvāṅgapothitāṃścārīn kurvatī vyacarattadā.
31. tasyāḥ agrataḥ tathā kālī śūlapātavidāritān
khaṭvāṅgapothitān ca arīn kurvatī vyacarat tadā
31. Similarly, in front of her, Kālī then moved about, rendering enemies torn apart by spear-thrusts and crushed by her skull-staff.
कमण्डलुजलाक्षेपहतवीर्यान् हतौजसः ।
ब्रह्माणी चाकरोच्छत्रून् येन येन स्म धावति ॥३२॥
32. kamaṇḍalujalākṣepahatavīryān hataujasaḥ .
brahmāṇī cākarocchatrūn yena yena sma dhāvati.
32. kamaṇḍalujalākṣepahatavīryān hataojasaḥ
brahmāṇī ca akarot śatrūn yena yena sma dhāvati
32. And Brahmāṇī, wherever she rushed, diminished the valor and energy of the enemies by sprinkling water from her water-pot.
माहेश्वरी त्रिशूलेन तथा चक्रेण वैष्णवी ।
दैत्याञ्जघान कौमारी तथा शक्त्यातिकोपना ॥३३॥
33. māheśvarī triśūlena tathā cakreṇa vaiṣṇavī .
daityāñjaghāna kaumārī tathā śaktyātikopanā.
33. māheśvarī triśūlena tathā cakrareṇa vaiṣṇavī
daityān jaghāna kaumārī tathā śaktyā atikopanā
33. Māheśvarī killed the demons with her trident, and Vaiṣṇavī similarly [killed them] with her discus. Likewise, the exceedingly wrathful Kaumārī [killed them] with her spear.
ऐन्द्रीकुलिशपातेन शतशो दैत्यदानवाः ।
पेतुर्विदारिताः पृथ्व्यां रुधिरौघप्रवर्षिणः ॥३४॥
34. aindrīkuliśapātena śataśo daityadānavāḥ .
peturvidāritāḥ pṛthvyāṃ rudhiraughapravarṣiṇaḥ.
34. aindrīkuliśapātena śataśaḥ daityadānavāḥ petuḥ
vidāritāḥ pṛthvyām rudhiraughapravarṣiṇaḥ
34. Hundreds of daityas and danavas (demons) fell to the earth, torn apart by the strike of Indra's thunderbolt, raining torrents of blood.
तुण्डप्रहारविध्वस्ता दंष्ट्राग्रक्षतवक्षसः ।
वाराहमूर्त्या न्यपतंश्चक्रेण च विदारिताः ॥३५॥
35. tuṇḍaprahāravidhvastā daṃṣṭrāgrakṣatavakṣasaḥ .
vārāhamūrtyā nyapataṃścakreṇa ca vidāritāḥ.
35. tuṇḍaprahāravidhvastāḥ daṃṣṭrāgrakṣatavakṣasaḥ
vārāhamūrtyā nyapatan cakreṇa ca vidāritāḥ
35. Their chests wounded by the tips of tusks and destroyed by snout-blows, they fell due to the boar form (Vārāhamūrti) and were torn apart by the discus.
नखैर्विदारितांश्चान्यान् भक्षयन्ती महासुरान् ।
नारसिंही चचाराजौ नादापूर्णदिगन्तरा ॥३६॥
36. nakhairvidāritāṃścānyān bhakṣayantī mahāsurān .
nārasiṃhī cacārājau nādāpūrṇadigantarā.
36. nakhaiḥ vidāritān ca anyān bhakṣayantī mahāsurān
nārasiṃhī cacāra ājau nādāpūrṇadigantarā
36. Narasiṃhī (the goddess form of Narasiṃha) roamed the battlefield, devouring other great asuras (demons) who were torn apart by her nails, her roars filling all the quarters of the sky.
चण्डाट्टहासैरसुराः शिवदूत्यभिदूषिताः ।
पेतुः पृथिव्यां पतितांस्तांश्चखादाथ सा तदा ॥३७॥
37. caṇḍāṭṭahāsairasurāḥ śivadūtyabhidūṣitāḥ .
petuḥ pṛthivyāṃ patitāṃstāṃścakhādātha sā tadā.
37. caṇḍāṭṭahāsaiḥ asurāḥ śivadūtyā abhidūṣitāḥ petuḥ
pṛthvyām patitān tān ca cakhāda atha sā tadā
37. The asuras (demons), defiled by the fierce roars of laughter from Shivadūtī, fell to the earth. She then devoured those who had fallen.
इति मातृगणं क्रुद्धं मर्दयन्तं महासुरान् ।
दृष्ट्वाभ्युपायैर्विविधैर्नेशुर्देवारिसैनिकाः ॥३८॥

38. Seeing the enraged host of divine mothers crushing the great demons with various strategies, the soldiers of the gods' enemies fled.
पलायनपरान् दृष्ट्वा दैत्यान् मातृगणार्दितान् ।
योद्धुमभ्याययौ क्रुद्धो रक्तबीजो महासुरः ॥३९॥
39. palāyanaparān dṛṣṭvā daityān mātṛgaṇārditān .

39. Seeing the demons, tormented by the host of divine mothers and intent on fleeing, the enraged great demon Raktabīja came forth to fight.
रक्तबिन्दुर्यदा भूमौ पतत्यस्य शरीरतः ।
समुत्पतति मेदिन्यां तत्प्रमाणो महासुरः ॥४०॥
40. raktabinduryadā bhūmau patatyasya śarīrataḥ .
samutpatati medinyāṃ tatpramāṇo mahāsuraḥ.

samutpatati medinyām tatpramāṇaḥ mahāsuraḥ
40. When a drop of blood falls from his body onto the ground, a great demon of equal size springs up on the earth.
युयुधे स गदापाणिपरिन्द्रशक्त्या महासुरः ।
ततश्चैन्द्री स्ववज्रेण रक्तबीजमताडयत् ॥४१॥
41. yuyudhe sa gadāpāṇiparindraśaktyā mahāsuraḥ .
tataścaindrī svavajreṇa raktabījamatāḍayat.
41. yuyudhe sa gadāpāṇiḥ parīndraśaktyā mahāsuraḥ
tataḥ ca aindrī svavajreṇa raktabījam atāḍayat
41. He, the great demon holding a mace, fought with the mighty power (śakti) of Indra. Then Aindrī struck Raktabīja with her own thunderbolt.
कुलिशेनाहतस्याशु बहु सुस्त्राव शोणितम् ।
समुत्तस्थुस्ततो योधास्तद्रूपास्तत्पराक्रमाः ॥४२॥
42. kuliśenāhatasyāśu bahu sustrāva śoṇitam .
samuttasthustato yodhāstadrūpāstatparākramāḥ.
42. kuliśena āhatasya āśu bahu sustrāva śoṇitam
samuttasthuḥ tataḥ yodhāḥ tadrūpāḥ tatparākramāḥ
42. Much blood quickly flowed from him when he was struck by the thunderbolt. From that blood, warriors immediately arose, identical in form and valor to him.
यावन्तः पतितास्तस्य शरीराद्रक्तबिन्दवः ।
तावन्तः पुरुषा जातास्तद्वीर्यबलविक्रमाः ॥४३॥
43. yāvantaḥ patitāstasya śarīrādraktabindavaḥ .
tāvantaḥ puruṣā jātāstadvīryabalavikramāḥ.
43. yāvantaḥ patitāḥ tasya śarīrāt raktabindavaḥ
tāvantaḥ puruṣāḥ jātāḥ tadvīryabalavikramāḥ
43. As many drops of blood fell from his body, so many men (puruṣa) were born, possessing his might, strength, and valor.
ते चापि युयुधुस्तत्र पुरुषा रक्तसम्भवाः ।
समं मातृबिरत्युग्रशस्त्रपातातिभीषणम् ॥४४॥
44. te cāpi yuyudhustatra puruṣā raktasambhavāḥ .
samaṃ mātṛbiratyugraśastrapātātibhīṣaṇam.
44. te ca api yuyudhuḥ tatra puruṣāḥ raktasambhavaḥ
samam mātṛbhiḥ atyugraśastrapātātibhīṣaṇam
44. And those men (puruṣa) born from his blood also fought there, waging a battle as intense as that fought by the Mothers (Mātṛs), which was exceedingly terrifying due to the shower of extremely fierce weapons.
पुनश्च वज्रपातेन क्षतमस्य शिरो यदा ।
ववाह रक्तं पुरुषास्ततो जाताः सहस्रशः ॥४५॥
45. punaśca vajrapātena kṣatamasya śiro yadā .
vavāha raktaṃ puruṣāstato jātāḥ sahasraśaḥ.
45. punaḥ ca vajrapātena kṣatam asya śiraḥ yadā
vavāha raktam puruṣāḥ tataḥ jātāḥ sahasraśaḥ
45. And again, when his head was wounded by a blow from a thunderbolt, blood flowed, and from that, men (puruṣa) were born in thousands.
वैष्णवी समरे चैनं चक्रेणाभिजघान ह ।
गदया दाडयामास ऐन्द्री तमसुरेश्वरम् ॥४६॥
46. vaiṣṇavī samare cainaṃ cakreṇābhijaghāna ha .
gadayā dāḍayāmāsa aindrī tamasureśvaram.
46. vaiṣṇavī samare ca enam cakreṇa abhijaghāna
ha gadayā dāḍayāmāsa aindrī tam asureśvaram
46. And indeed, in battle, the goddess Vaiṣṇavī struck him with her disc, and the goddess Aindrī also struck that lord of demons (asureśvaram) with her mace.
वेष्णावीचक्रभिन्नस्य रुधिरस्त्रावसम्भवैः ।
सहस्रशौ जगद्व्याप्तं तत्प्रमाणैर्महासुरैः ॥४७॥
47. veṣṇāvīcakrabhinnasya rudhirastrāvasambhavaiḥ .
sahasraśau jagadvyāptaṃ tatpramāṇairmahāsuraiḥ.
47. vaiṣṇavīcakrabhinnasya rudhirastrāvasambhavaiḥ
sahasraśau jagat vyāptam tatpramāṇaiḥ mahāsuraiḥ
47. From him who was struck by the (goddess) Vaiṣṇavī's disc, the world was pervaded by thousands of great demons (mahāsuraiḥ), equal in size (tatpramāṇaiḥ) and born from the flow of his blood.
शक्त्या जघान कौमारो वाराही च तथासिना ।
माहेश्वरी त्रिशूलेन रक्तबीजं महासुरम् ॥४८॥
48. śaktyā jaghāna kaumāro vārāhī ca tathāsinā .
māheśvarī triśūlena raktabījaṃ mahāsuram.
48. śaktyā jaghāna kaumāraḥ vārāhī ca tathā asinā
māheśvarī triśūlena raktabījam mahāsuram
48. Kumāra struck (him) with his spear (śakti). And in the same way, Vārāhī struck with her sword, while Māheśvarī struck the great demon (mahāsuram) Raktābīja with her trident.
स चापि गदया दैत्यः सर्वा एवाहनत् पृथक् ।
मातः कोपसमाविष्टो रक्तबीजो महासुरः ॥४९॥
49. sa cāpi gadayā daityaḥ sarvā evāhanat pṛthak .
mātaḥ kopasamāviṣṭo raktabījo mahāsuraḥ.
49. sa ca api gadayā daityaḥ sarvā eva ahanat pṛthak
mātaḥ kopasamāviṣṭaḥ raktabījaḥ mahāsuraḥ
49. O Mother, that demon (daityaḥ), the great demon (mahāsuraḥ) Raktābīja, filled with anger, also struck all of them individually with his mace.
तस्याहतस्य बहुधा शक्तिशूलादिभिर्बुवि ।
पपात यो वै रक्तौघस्तेनासञ्छतशोऽसुराः ॥५०॥
50. tasyāhatasya bahudhā śaktiśūlādibhirbuvi .
papāta yo vai raktaughastenāsañchataśo'surāḥ.
50. tasya āhatasya bahudhā śaktiśūlādibhiḥ bhuvi
papāta yaḥ vai raktaughaḥ tena āsan śataśaḥ asurāḥ
50. When he (Raktabīja) was struck multiple times by various weapons like spears and lances, the stream of blood that fell to the earth indeed gave rise to hundreds of demons from it.
तैश्चासुरासृक्सम्भूतैरसुरैः सकलं जगत् ।
व्याप्तमासीत्ततो देवा भयमाजग्मुरुत्तमम् ॥५१॥
51. taiścāsurāsṛksambhūtairasuraiḥ sakalaṃ jagat .
vyāptamāsīttato devā bhayamājagmuruttamam.
51. taiḥ ca asurāsṛksambhūtaiḥ asuraiḥ sakalam jagat
vyāptam āsīt tataḥ devāḥ bhayam ājagmuḥ uttamam
51. And by those demons who were born from the demon's blood, the entire world was pervaded. Thereupon, the gods experienced extreme fear.
तान् विषण्णान् सुरान् दृष्ट्वा चण्डिका प्राह सत्वरा ।
उवाच कालीं चामुण्डे विस्तीर्णं वदनं कुरु ॥५२॥
52. tān viṣaṇṇān surān dṛṣṭvā caṇḍikā prāha satvarā .
uvāca kālīṃ cāmuṇḍe vistīrṇaṃ vadanaṃ kuru.

52. Having seen those distressed gods, Cāṇḍikā swiftly said to Kālī, "O Cāmuṇḍā, make your mouth wide!"
मच्छस्त्रपातसम्भूतान् रक्तबिन्दून् महासुरान् ।
रक्तबिन्दोः प्रतीच्छ त्वं वक्त्रेणानेन वेगिना ॥५३॥
53. macchastrapātasambhūtān raktabindūn mahāsurān .
raktabindoḥ pratīccha tvaṃ vaktreṇānena veginā.

53. You, with this swift mouth, must consume the great demons who emerge as blood-drops from the impact of my weapon, directly from each such blood-drop.
भक्षयन्ती चर रणे तदुत्पन्नान् महासुरान् ।
एवमेष क्षयं दैत्यः क्षीणरक्तो गमिष्यति ।
भक्ष्यमाणास्त्वया चोग्रा न चोत्पत्स्यन्ति चापरे ॥५४॥
54. bhakṣayantī cara raṇe tadutpannān mahāsurān .
evameṣa kṣayaṃ daityaḥ kṣīṇarakto gamiṣyati .
bhakṣyamāṇāstvayā cogrā na cotpatsyanti cāpare.
54. bhakṣayantī cara raṇe tat utpannān
mahāsurān evam eṣa kṣayam daityaḥ
kṣīṇaraktaḥ gamiṣyati bhakṣyamāṇāḥ tvayā
ca ugrāḥ na ca utpattsyanti ca apare
54. You should roam in battle, devouring the great asuras born from him. In this way, this demon, with his blood diminished, will meet his end. And those fierce and terrible beings, being devoured by you, will also not be born again.
ऋषिरुवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा तां ततो देवी शूलेनाभिजघान तम् ।
मुखेन काली जगृहे रक्तबीजस्य सोणितम् ॥५५॥
55. ṛṣiruvāca .
ityuktvā tāṃ tato devī śūlenābhijaghāna tam .
mukhena kālī jagṛhe raktabījasya soṇitam.
55. ṛṣiḥ uvāca iti uktvā tām tataḥ devī śūlena abhijaghāna
tam mukhena kālī jagṛhe raktabījasya śoṇitam
55. The sage said: Having spoken thus to her, the Goddess then struck him (Raktābīja) with her spear. Meanwhile, Kālī received Raktābīja's blood with her mouth.
ततोऽसावाजघानाथ गदया तत्र चण्डिकाम् ।
न चास्या वेदनां चक्रे गदापातोऽल्पिकामपि ॥५६॥
56. tato'sāvājaghānātha gadayā tatra caṇḍikām .
na cāsyā vedanāṃ cakre gadāpāto'lpikāmapi.
56. tataḥ asau ājaghāna atha gadayā tatra caṇḍikām
na ca asyāḥ vedanām cakre gadāpātaḥ alīpikām api
56. Then he (Raktābīja) struck Caṇḍikā there with a mace. But that mace-blow did not cause her even a slight amount of pain.
तस्याहतस्य देहात्तु बहु सुस्त्राव शोणितम् ।
यतस्ततः स्ववक्त्रेण वामुण्डा सम्प्रतीच्छति ॥५७॥
57. tasyāhatasya dehāttu bahu sustrāva śoṇitam .
yatastataḥ svavaktreṇa vāmuṇḍā sampratīcchati.
57. tasya āhatasya dehāt tu bahu susrāva śoṇitam
yatas tataḥ sva vaktreṇa cāmuṇḍā sampratīcchati
57. But from his (Raktābīja's) wounded body, much blood indeed flowed. Cāmuṇḍā, with her own mouth, receives it from wherever it falls.
मुखे समुद्गता येऽस्या रक्तपातान्महासुराः ।
तांश्चखादाथ चामुण्डा पपौ तस्य च शोणितम् ॥५८॥
58. mukhe samudgatā ye'syā raktapātānmahāsurāḥ .
tāṃścakhādātha cāmuṇḍā papau tasya ca śoṇitam.
58. mukhe samudgatāḥ ye asyāḥ raktapātāt mahāsurāḥ
tān cakhāda atha cāmuṇḍā papau tasya ca śoṇitam
58. Those great demons who had sprung forth from her mouth due to the shedding of blood, Chāmuṇḍā then devoured them and drank his blood.
देवी शूलेन चक्रेण बाणैरसिभिरृष्टिभिः ।
जघान रक्तबीजं तं चामुण्डापीतशोणितम् ॥५९॥
59. devī śūlena cakreṇa bāṇairasibhirṛṣṭibhiḥ .
jaghāna raktabījaṃ taṃ cāmuṇḍāpītaśoṇitam.
59. devī śūlena cakreṇa bāṇaiḥ asibhiḥ ṛṣṭibhiḥ
jaghāna raktabījam tam cāmuṇḍāpītaśoṇitam
59. The Goddess killed that Raktabīja, whose blood had been drunk by Chāmuṇḍā, with a spear, a discus, arrows, swords, and lances.
स पपात महीपृष्ठे शस्त्रसंहतितो हतः ।
नीरक्तश्च महीपाल रक्तबीजो महासुरः ॥६०॥
60. sa papāta mahīpṛṣṭhe śastrasaṃhatito hataḥ .
nīraktaśca mahīpāla raktabījo mahāsuraḥ.
60. saḥ papāta mahīpṛṣṭhe śastrasaṃhatitaḥ hataḥ
nīraktaḥ ca mahīpāla raktabījaḥ mahāsuraḥ
60. O King, that great demon Raktabīja, struck and killed by the shower of weapons, fell to the surface of the earth, drained of all blood.
ततस्ते हर्षमतुलमवापुस्त्रिदशा नृप ।
तेषां मातृगणो जातो ननर्तासृङ्मदोद्धतः ॥६१॥
61. tataste harṣamatulamavāpustridaśā nṛpa .
teṣāṃ mātṛgaṇo jāto nanartāsṛṅmadoddhataḥ.
61. tataḥ te harṣam atulam avāpuḥ tridaśāḥ nṛpa
teṣām mātṛgaṇaḥ jātaḥ nanarta asṛṅmadoddhataḥ
61. Then, O King, the gods attained incomparable joy. Their host of Mothers, exhilarated by the intoxication of blood, danced.
