ऋषिरुवाच ।
ततः सुरगणाः सर्वे देव्या इन्द्रपुरोगमाः ।
स्तुतिमारेभिरे कर्तुं निहते महिषासुरे ॥१॥

1. ṛṣiruvāca .
tataḥ suragaṇāḥ sarve devyā indrapurogamāḥ .

The sage said: Then, all the hosts of gods, with Indra at their head, began to offer praise to the Goddess after Mahiṣāsura had been slain.
शक्रादयः सुरगणा निहतेऽतिवीर्ये तस्मिन् दुरात्मनि सुरारिबले च देव्या ।
तां तुष्टुवुः प्रणतिनम्रशिरोधरांसा वाग्भिः प्रहर्षपुलकोद्गमचारुदेहाः ॥२॥

2. śakrādayaḥ suragaṇā nihate'tivīrye tasmin durātmani surāribale ca devyā .
tāṃ tuṣṭuvuḥ praṇatinamraśirodharāṃsā vāgbhiḥ praharṣapulakodgamacārudehāḥ.

śakrādayaḥ suragaṇāḥ nihate ativīrye tasmin durātmani surāribale ca devyā .

When that exceedingly powerful, wicked chief of the enemies of the gods was slain by the Goddess, the hosts of gods led by Indra (Śakra) praised her with words, their heads and shoulders bowed low in reverence, and their beautiful bodies manifesting horripilation due to intense joy.
देवा ऊचुः ।
देव्या यया ततमिदं जगदात्मशक्त्या निः शेषदेवगणशक्तिसमूहमूर्त्या ।
तामम्बिकामखिलदेवमर्षिपूज्यां भक्त्या नताः स्म विदधातु शुभानि सा नः ॥३॥

3. devā ūcuḥ .
devyā yayā tatamidaṃ jagadātmaśaktyā niḥ śeṣadevagaṇaśaktisamūhamūrtyā .
tāmambikāmakhiladevamarṣipūjyāṃ bhaktyā natāḥ sma vidadhātu śubhāni sā naḥ.

devyā yayā tatam idam jagat ātmaśaktyā niḥśeṣadevagaṇaśaktisamūhamūrtyā .
tām ambikām akhiladevamarṣipūjyām bhaktyā natāḥ sma vidadhātu śubhāni sā naḥ

The gods said: We bow down with devotion (bhakti) to that Ambikā, by whose own intrinsic power (śakti) this entire universe is pervaded, and who embodies the collective power (śakti) of all the hosts of gods without exception; may she bestow auspiciousness upon us.
यस्याः प्रभावमतुलं भगवाननन्तो ब्रह्मा हरश्च नहि वक्तुमलं बलं च ।
सा चण्डिकाखिलजगत्परिपालनाय नाशाय चाशुभयस्य मतिं करोतु ॥४॥
सा चण्डिकाखिलजगत्परिपालनाय नाशाय चाशुभयस्य मतिं करोतु ॥४॥
4. yasyāḥ prabhāvamatulaṃ bhagavānananto brahmā haraśca nahi vaktumalaṃ balaṃ ca .
sā caṇḍikākhilajagatparipālanāya nāśāya cāśubhayasya matiṃ karotu.
sā caṇḍikākhilajagatparipālanāya nāśāya cāśubhayasya matiṃ karotu.

yasyāḥ prabhāvam atulam bhagavān anantaḥ brahmā haraḥ ca na hi vaktum alam balam ca .
sā caṇḍikā akhilajagatparipālanāya nāśāya ca aśubhasya matim karotu
sā caṇḍikā akhilajagatparipālanāya nāśāya ca aśubhasya matim karotu
4.
May that Caṇḍikā, whose incomparable majesty and power (śakti) neither the divine Ananta, nor Brahmā, nor Hara (Śiva) are able to describe, resolve to protect the entire universe and destroy all evil.
या श्रीः स्वयं सुकृतिनां भवनेष्वलक्ष्मीः पापात्मनां कृतधियां हृदयेषु बुद्धिः ।
श्रद्धां सतां कुलजनप्रभवस्य लज्जा तां त्वां नताः स्म परिपालय देवि विश्वम् ॥५॥

5. yā śrīḥ svayaṃ sukṛtināṃ bhavaneṣvalakṣmīḥ pāpātmanāṃ kṛtadhiyāṃ hṛdayeṣu buddhiḥ .
śraddhāṃ satāṃ kulajanaprabhavasya lajjā tāṃ tvāṃ natāḥ sma paripālaya devi viśvam.

yā śrīḥ svayam sukṛtinām bhavaneṣu alakṣmīḥ

tām tvām natāḥ sma paripālaya devi viśvam

5.
O Goddess, we bow to You who are yourself prosperity (śrī) in the dwellings of the virtuous and misfortune (alakṣmī) in those of the wicked; intellect (buddhi) in the hearts of the wise; faith (śraddhā) among good people; and modesty (lajjā) in those of noble birth. Protect the universe!
किं वर्णयाम तव रूपमचिन्त्यमेतत् किं चातिवीर्यमसुरक्षयकारि भूरि ।
किं चाहवेषु चरितानि तवाद्भुतानि सर्वेषु देव्यसुरदेवगणादिकेषु ॥६॥
किं चाहवेषु चरितानि तवाद्भुतानि सर्वेषु देव्यसुरदेवगणादिकेषु ॥६॥
6. kiṃ varṇayāma tava rūpamacintyametat kiṃ cātivīryamasurakṣayakāri bhūri .
kiṃ cāhaveṣu caritāni tavādbhutāni sarveṣu devyasuradevagaṇādikeṣu.
kiṃ cāhaveṣu caritāni tavādbhutāni sarveṣu devyasuradevagaṇādikeṣu.

kim varṇayāma tava rūpam acintyam etat
kim ca ativīryam asurakṣayakāri bhūri
kim ca āhaveṣu caritāni tava adbhutāni
sarveṣu devi asuradevagaṇādikeṣu
kim ca ativīryam asurakṣayakāri bhūri
kim ca āhaveṣu caritāni tava adbhutāni
sarveṣu devi asuradevagaṇādikeṣu

O Goddess, how can we describe this inconceivable form of yours? And how can we describe your immense, demon-destroying power? What words can portray your amazing deeds in battles, deeds recognized by all, including the hosts of demons and gods?
हेतुः समस्तजगतां त्रिगुणापि दोषैर् न ज्ञायसे हरिहरादिभिरप्यपारा ।
सर्वाश्रयाखिलमिदं जगदंशभूतम् अव्याकृता हि परमा प्रकृतिस्त्वमाद्या ॥७॥
सर्वाश्रयाखिलमिदं जगदंशभूतम् अव्याकृता हि परमा प्रकृतिस्त्वमाद्या ॥७॥
7. hetuḥ samastajagatāṃ triguṇāpi doṣair na jñāyase hariharādibhirapyapārā .
sarvāśrayākhilamidaṃ jagadaṃśabhūtam avyākṛtā hi paramā prakṛtistvamādyā.
sarvāśrayākhilamidaṃ jagadaṃśabhūtam avyākṛtā hi paramā prakṛtistvamādyā.
7.
hetuḥ samastajagatām triguṇā api doṣaiḥ
na jñāyase hariharādibhiḥ api aparā
sarvāśrayā akhilam idam jagat aṃśabhūtam
avyākṛtā hi paramā prakṛtiḥ tvam ādyā
na jñāyase hariharādibhiḥ api aparā
sarvāśrayā akhilam idam jagat aṃśabhūtam
avyākṛtā hi paramā prakṛtiḥ tvam ādyā
7.
You are the cause of all worlds. Though comprised of the three qualities (guṇas), you are not comprehended as having imperfections, and even Hari (Vishnu), Hara (Shiva), and others do not fully know your boundless nature. You are the ultimate support; this entire universe is merely a part of you. Indeed, you are the primordial (ādyā), supreme, unmanifest nature (prakṛti).
यस्याः समस्तसुरता समुदीरणेन तृप्तिं प्रयान्ति सकलेषु मखेषु देवि ।
स्वाहासि वै पितृगणस्य च तृप्तिहेतुर् उच्चार्यसे त्वमत एव जनैः स्वधा च ॥८॥
स्वाहासि वै पितृगणस्य च तृप्तिहेतुर् उच्चार्यसे त्वमत एव जनैः स्वधा च ॥८॥
8. yasyāḥ samastasuratā samudīraṇena tṛptiṃ prayānti sakaleṣu makheṣu devi .
svāhāsi vai pitṛgaṇasya ca tṛptihetur uccāryase tvamata eva janaiḥ svadhā ca.
svāhāsi vai pitṛgaṇasya ca tṛptihetur uccāryase tvamata eva janaiḥ svadhā ca.

yasyāḥ samastasuratā samudīraṇena tṛptim
prayānti sakaleṣu makheṣu devi svāhā
asi vai pitṛgaṇasya ca tṛptihetuḥ
uccāryase tvam ataḥ eva janaiḥ svadhā ca
prayānti sakaleṣu makheṣu devi svāhā
asi vai pitṛgaṇasya ca tṛptihetuḥ
uccāryase tvam ataḥ eva janaiḥ svadhā ca
8.
O Goddess, it is by invoking your name during all sacrifices that the entire host of gods attains satisfaction. You are indeed Svāhā, and also the cause of gratification for the assembly of ancestors (pitṛgaṇa). For this very reason, people also invoke you as Svadhā.
या मुक्तिहेतुरविचिन्त्यमहाव्रता त्वम् अभ्यस्यसे सुनियतेन्द्रियतत्त्वसारैः ।
मोक्षार्थिभिर्मुनिभिरस्तसमस्तदोषैर् विद्यासि सा भगवती परमा हि देवि ॥९॥
मोक्षार्थिभिर्मुनिभिरस्तसमस्तदोषैर् विद्यासि सा भगवती परमा हि देवि ॥९॥
9. yā muktiheturavicintyamahāvratā tvam abhyasyase suniyatendriyatattvasāraiḥ .
mokṣārthibhirmunibhirastasamastadoṣair vidyāsi sā bhagavatī paramā hi devi.
mokṣārthibhirmunibhirastasamastadoṣair vidyāsi sā bhagavatī paramā hi devi.
9.
yā muktihetuḥ avicintyamahāvratā tvam
abhyasyase suniyatendriyatattvasāraiḥ
mokṣārthibhiḥ munibhiḥ astasamastadoṣaiḥ
vidyā asi sā bhagavatī paramā hi devi
abhyasyase suniyatendriyatattvasāraiḥ
mokṣārthibhiḥ munibhiḥ astasamastadoṣaiḥ
vidyā asi sā bhagavatī paramā hi devi
9.
O Goddess, you are indeed that supreme divine knowledge (vidyā) whose great vows are inconceivable. You are practiced by sages who seek final liberation (mokṣa), whose senses are perfectly disciplined, whose essence is pure, and from whom all impurities have vanished.
शब्दात्मिका सुविमलर्ग्यजुषां निधानम् उद्गीथरम्यपदपाठवतां च साम्नाम् ।
देवी त्रयी भगवती भवभावनाय वार्ता च सर्वजगतां परमार्तिहन्त्री ॥१०॥

10. śabdātmikā suvimalargyajuṣāṃ nidhānam udgītharamyapadapāṭhavatāṃ ca sāmnām .
devī trayī bhagavatī bhavabhāvanāya vārtā ca sarvajagatāṃ paramārtihantrī.
devī trayī bhagavatī bhavabhāvanāya vārtā ca sarvajagatāṃ paramārtihantrī.
10.
śabdātmikā suvimala ṛk yajuṣām nidhānam
udgītharamya-padapāṭhavatām ca sāmnām
devī trayī bhagavatī bhavabhāvanāya
vārtā ca sarvajagatām paramārtihantrī
udgītharamya-padapāṭhavatām ca sāmnām
devī trayī bhagavatī bhavabhāvanāya
vārtā ca sarvajagatām paramārtihantrī
10.
You are the divine (bhagavatī) triple Veda (trayī), whose essence (ātman) is sound, the repository of the very pure Ṛk and Yajus mantras, and of the Sāman chants with their beautiful udgītha word-recitations. You are also the worldly knowledge (vārtā) that sustains all beings (jagatām), and the dispeller of their ultimate suffering.
मेधासि देवि विदिताखिलशास्त्रसारा दुर्गासि दुर्गभवसागरनौरसङ्गा ।
श्रीः कैटभारिहृदयैककृताधिवासा गौरी त्वमेव शशिमौलिकृतप्रतिष्ठा ॥११॥

11. medhāsi devi viditākhilaśāstrasārā durgāsi durgabhavasāgaranaurasaṅgā .
śrīḥ kaiṭabhārihṛdayaikakṛtādhivāsā gaurī tvameva śaśimaulikṛtapratiṣṭhā.
śrīḥ kaiṭabhārihṛdayaikakṛtādhivāsā gaurī tvameva śaśimaulikṛtapratiṣṭhā.

medhā asi devi viditākhilaśāstrasārā
durgā asi durgabhava-sāgara-nauḥ asaṅgā
śrīḥ kaiṭabhāri-hṛdaya-eka-kṛtādhivāsā
gaurī tvam eva śaśimauli-kṛtapratisthā
durgā asi durgabhava-sāgara-nauḥ asaṅgā
śrīḥ kaiṭabhāri-hṛdaya-eka-kṛtādhivāsā
gaurī tvam eva śaśimauli-kṛtapratisthā
11.
O Goddess, you are intellect (medhā), whose essence is the knowledge of all scriptures. You are Durgā, the unattached boat that helps cross the difficult ocean of worldly existence (saṃsāra). You are Śrī (Lakṣmī), who has made the heart of Kaiṭabha's enemy (Viṣṇu) her exclusive abode. You alone are Gaurī (Pārvatī), who has established herself on Śaśimauli (Śiva).
ईषत्सहासममलं परिपूर्णचन्द्रबिम्बानुकारि कनकोत्तमकान्तिकान्तम् ।
अत्यद्भुतं प्रहृतमात्तरुषा तथापि वक्त्रं विलोक्य सहसा महिषासुरेण ॥१२॥
अत्यद्भुतं प्रहृतमात्तरुषा तथापि वक्त्रं विलोक्य सहसा महिषासुरेण ॥१२॥
12. īṣatsahāsamamalaṃ paripūrṇacandrabimbānukāri kanakottamakāntikāntam .
atyadbhutaṃ prahṛtamāttaruṣā tathāpi vaktraṃ vilokya sahasā mahiṣāsureṇa.
atyadbhutaṃ prahṛtamāttaruṣā tathāpi vaktraṃ vilokya sahasā mahiṣāsureṇa.

īṣatsahāsam amalam paripūrṇacandrabimbānukāri
kanaka-uttama-kānti-kāntam
atyadbhutam prahṛtam ātta-ruṣā tathāpi
vaktram vilokya sahasā mahiṣāsureṇa
kanaka-uttama-kānti-kāntam
atyadbhutam prahṛtam ātta-ruṣā tathāpi
vaktram vilokya sahasā mahiṣāsureṇa
12.
Mahiṣāsura, though filled with great wrath and having struck, suddenly beheld that face which was slightly smiling, spotless, resembled the orb of the full moon, and was radiantly lovely with the splendor of excellent gold, appearing extremely wondrous.
दृष्ट्वा तु देवि कुपितं भ्रुकुटीकरालम् उद्यच्छशाङ्कसदृशच्छवि यन्न सद्यः ।
प्राणान्मुमोच महीषस्तदतीव चित्रं कैर्जीव्यते हि कुपितान्तकदर्शनेन ॥१३॥
प्राणान्मुमोच महीषस्तदतीव चित्रं कैर्जीव्यते हि कुपितान्तकदर्शनेन ॥१३॥
13. dṛṣṭvā tu devi kupitaṃ bhrukuṭīkarālam udyacchaśāṅkasadṛśacchavi yanna sadyaḥ .
prāṇānmumoca mahīṣastadatīva citraṃ kairjīvyate hi kupitāntakadarśanena.
prāṇānmumoca mahīṣastadatīva citraṃ kairjīvyate hi kupitāntakadarśanena.
13.
dṛṣṭvā tu devi kupitam bhrukuṭīkarālam
udyacchasaśāṅkasadṛśacchavi yat na sadyaḥ
prāṇān mumoca mahīṣaḥ tat atīva citram
kaiḥ jīvyate hi kupitāntakadarśanena
udyacchasaśāṅkasadṛśacchavi yat na sadyaḥ
prāṇān mumoca mahīṣaḥ tat atīva citram
kaiḥ jīvyate hi kupitāntakadarśanena
13.
O Goddess, it is exceedingly astonishing that the buffalo demon (Mahiṣa), even after seeing your enraged form, which was dreadful with a frown and radiant like the rising moon, did not immediately relinquish his life. For indeed, by whom can life be sustained after witnessing an enraged god of death (Antaka)?
देवि प्रसीद परमा भवती भवाय सद्यो विनाशयसि कोपवती कुलानि ।
विज्ञातमेतदधुनैव यदस्तमेतन् नीतं बलं सुविपुलं महिषासुरस्य ॥१४॥
विज्ञातमेतदधुनैव यदस्तमेतन् नीतं बलं सुविपुलं महिषासुरस्य ॥१४॥
14. devi prasīda paramā bhavatī bhavāya sadyo vināśayasi kopavatī kulāni .
vijñātametadadhunaiva yadastametan nītaṃ balaṃ suvipulaṃ mahiṣāsurasya.

devi prasīda paramā bhavatī bhavāya
sadyaḥ vināśayasi kopavatī kulāni
vijñātam etat adhunā eva yat astam etat
nītam balam suvipulam mahiṣāsurasya
sadyaḥ vināśayasi kopavatī kulāni
vijñātam etat adhunā eva yat astam etat
nītam balam suvipulam mahiṣāsurasya
14.
O Goddess, be gracious! You, the supreme one, bestow prosperity. When you are enraged, you immediately destroy entire lineages. This has just now been understood, for the exceedingly vast army of the demon Mahiṣāsura has been brought to its demise.
ते संमता जनपदेषु धनानि तेषां तेषां यशांसि न च सीदति धर्मवर्गः ।
धन्यास्त एव निभृतात्मजभृत्यदारा येषां सदाभ्युदयदा भवती प्रसन्ना ॥१५॥
धन्यास्त एव निभृतात्मजभृत्यदारा येषां सदाभ्युदयदा भवती प्रसन्ना ॥१५॥
15. te saṃmatā janapadeṣu dhanāni teṣāṃ teṣāṃ yaśāṃsi na ca sīdati dharmavargaḥ .
dhanyāsta eva nibhṛtātmajabhṛtyadārā yeṣāṃ sadābhyudayadā bhavatī prasannā.
dhanyāsta eva nibhṛtātmajabhṛtyadārā yeṣāṃ sadābhyudayadā bhavatī prasannā.
15.
te saṃmatā janapadeṣu dhanāni teṣāṃ
teṣāṃ yaśāṃsi na ca sīdati dharmavargaḥ
dhanyāḥ te eva nibhṛtātmajabhṛtyadārāḥ
yeṣāṃ sadā abhyudayadā bhavatī prasannā
teṣāṃ yaśāṃsi na ca sīdati dharmavargaḥ
dhanyāḥ te eva nibhṛtātmajabhṛtyadārāḥ
yeṣāṃ sadā abhyudayadā bhavatī prasannā
15.
Those (people) are respected in their communities; their wealth and renown never diminish, nor does their dedication to (dharma) decline. Truly blessed are those whose children, servants, and wives are well-cared for, and to whom you, when pleased, always grant prosperity.
धर्म्याणि देवि सकलानि सदैव कर्माण्य् अत्यादृतः प्रतिदिनं सुकृती करोति ।
स्वर्गं प्रयाति च ततो भवतीप्रसादाल् लोकत्रयेऽपि फलदा ननु देवि तेन ॥१६॥
स्वर्गं प्रयाति च ततो भवतीप्रसादाल् लोकत्रयेऽपि फलदा ननु देवि तेन ॥१६॥
16. dharmyāṇi devi sakalāni sadaiva karmāṇy atyādṛtaḥ pratidinaṃ sukṛtī karoti .
svargaṃ prayāti ca tato bhavatīprasādāl lokatraye'pi phaladā nanu devi tena.
svargaṃ prayāti ca tato bhavatīprasādāl lokatraye'pi phaladā nanu devi tena.
16.
dharmyāṇi devi sakalāni sadā eva karmāṇi
ati ādṛtaḥ pratidinam sukṛtī karoti
svargam prayāti ca tataḥ bhavatīprasādāt
lokatraye api phaladā nanu devi tena
ati ādṛtaḥ pratidinam sukṛtī karoti
svargam prayāti ca tataḥ bhavatīprasādāt
lokatraye api phaladā nanu devi tena
16.
O Goddess, a virtuous person, always diligent, daily performs all actions (karma) that are in accordance with (dharma). And through your grace, they go to heaven. Indeed, O Goddess, through such a person, you are the bestower of rewards even in the three worlds.
दुर्गे स्मृता हरसि भीतिमशेषजन्तोः स्वस्थैः स्मृता मतिमतीव शुभां ददासि ।
दारिद्र्यदुःखभयहारिणि का त्वदन्या सर्वोपकारकरणाय सदाऽऽर्द्रचित्ता ॥१७॥
दारिद्र्यदुःखभयहारिणि का त्वदन्या सर्वोपकारकरणाय सदाऽऽर्द्रचित्ता ॥१७॥
17. durge smṛtā harasi bhītimaśeṣajantoḥ svasthaiḥ smṛtā matimatīva śubhāṃ dadāsi .

O Durgā, when you are remembered, you remove the fear of every being. When remembered by healthy people, you bestow a most auspicious intellect (mati). Who else but you, O remover of poverty, sorrow, and fear, always has a compassionate heart for rendering all kinds of help?
एभिर्हतैर्जगदुपैति सुखं तथैते कुर्वन्तु नाम नरकाय चिराय पापम् ।
संग्राममृत्युमधिगम्य दिवं प्रयान्तु मत्वेति नूनमहितान् विनिहंसि देवि ॥१८॥

By the killing of these (demons), the world attains happiness. And let these (demons) indeed commit sin (pāpam) for a long time, leading to hell (naraka); (but) let them attain death in battle and proceed to heaven (divam). Thinking thus, O Goddess, you certainly destroy these enemies.
दृष्ट्वैव किं न भवती प्रकरोति भस्म सर्वासुरानरिषु यत्प्रहिणोषि शस्त्रम् ।
लोकान् प्रयान्तु रिपवोऽपि हि शस्त्रपूता इत्थं मतिर्भवति तेष्वपि तेऽतिसाध्वी ॥१९॥

Just by seeing, why do you not turn all these demon-enemies into ashes, O Goddess, you who send weapons among them? (It is because you think:) 'Let these enemies also reach the higher worlds, purified by weapons.' Such a most righteous (or benevolent) intention (mati) you have even towards them.
खड्गप्रभानिकरविस्फुरणैस्तथोग्रैः शूलाग्रकान्तिनिवहेन दृशोऽसुराणाम् ।
यन्नागता विलयमंशुमदिन्दुखण्डयोग्याननं तव विलोकयतां तदेतत् ॥२०॥

By the fierce flashes of multitudes of sword-gleams, and by the mass of light from spear-tips, how is it that the eyes of the demons, even while gazing upon your face - which is worthy of a moon-fragment (i.e., as beautiful as a partial moon) - did not meet destruction? This is truly remarkable.
दुर्वृत्तवृत्तशमनं तव देवि शीलं रूपं तथैतदविचिन्त्यमतुल्यमन्यैः ।
वीर्यं च हन्तृ हृतदेवपराक्रमाणां वैरिष्वपि प्रकटितैव दया त्वयेत्थम् ॥२१॥

O Goddess, your nature (śīlam) suppresses the conduct of the wicked. Similarly, this form of yours is inconceivable and unequaled by others. Your valor, which destroys those who had stripped the gods of their power, is also such that compassion has indeed been thus manifested by you even towards your enemies.
केनोपमा भवतु तेऽस्य पराक्रमस्य रूपं च शत्रुभयकार्यतिहारि कुत्र ।
चित्ते कृपा समरनिष्ठुरता च दृष्टा त्वय्येव देवि वरदे भुवनत्रयेऽपि ॥२२॥

With what can your valor be compared, and where else is there a form that simultaneously inspires great fear in enemies and is exceedingly beautiful? O Goddess, giver of boons, it is only in you that compassion (kṛpā) in the heart and ruthlessness in battle are seen, even throughout the three worlds.
त्रैलोक्यमेतदखिलं रिपुनाशनेन त्रातं त्वया समरमूर्धनि तेऽपि हत्वा ।
नीता दिवं रिपुगणा भयमप्यपास्तम् अस्माकमुन्मदसुरारिभवं नमस्ते ॥२३॥

By destroying your enemies, you have protected this entire three worlds (trailokyam). Having slain even those hordes of enemies on the battlefield, you have led them to heaven. Moreover, the fear we experienced, which arose from the maddened foes of the gods, has also been dispelled. Salutations to you!
शूलेन पाहि नो देवि पाहि खड्गेन चाम्बिके ।

O Goddess, protect us with your spear; and O Ambika, protect us with your sword. Protect us with the sound of your bell, and also with the twang of your bowstring.

भ्रामणेनात्मशूलस्य उत्तरस्यां तथेश्वरि ॥२५॥

O Caṇḍikā, protect (me) in the east and in the west. O Īśvarī, protect (me) in the south; and likewise, in the north, by the whirling of your own trident (śūla).
सौम्यानि यानि रूपाणि त्रैलोक्ये विचरन्ति ते ।
यानि चात्यर्थघोराणि तै रक्षास्मांस्तथा भुवम् ॥२६॥

26. saumyāni yāni rūpāṇi trailokye vicaranti te .

Whatever gentle forms of yours move about in the three worlds, and whatever extremely dreadful (ghora) ones, by those, protect us and also the earth.

O Ambikā, by those swords, tridents (śūla), maces, and other weapons (astra) that are held in your lotus-like hands, protect us from all sides.

एवं स्तुता सुरैर्दिव्यैः कुसुमैर्नन्दनोद्भवैः ।
अर्चिता जगतां धात्री तथा गन्धानुलेपनैः ॥२८॥

The seer said: Thus, the sustainer of the worlds (dhātrī) was praised by the divine gods and worshipped with flowers born from Nandana (the celestial garden) as well as with fragrant unguents.
भक्त्या समस्तैस्त्रिदशार्दिव्यैर्धूपैस्तु धूपिता ।
प्राह प्रसादसुमुखी समस्तान् प्रणतान् सुरान् ॥२९॥

She, having been worshipped by all the gods with divine incenses that remove their suffering, and with a gracious and pleasant face, spoke to all the prostrating gods (surān).

व्रियतां त्रिदशाः सर्वे यदस्मत्तोऽभिवाञ्छितम् ।
ददाम्यहमतिप्रीत्या स्तवैरेभिः सुपूजिता ॥३०॥

The Goddess said: "O all you gods, choose whatever you desire from me. I, having been well-worshipped by these praises, will give it with great affection."
कर्तव्यमपरं यच्च दुष्करं तन्न विद्महे ।
इत्याकर्ण्ये वचो देव्याः प्रत्यूचुस्ते दिवौकसः ॥३१॥

31. kartavyamaparaṃ yacca duṣkaraṃ tanna vidmahe .

"Whatever other task, even a difficult one, remains to be done, we do not know it." Having heard these words of the Goddess, those dwellers of heaven (divaukasaḥ) replied.
देवा ऊचुः ।
भगवत्या कृतं सर्वं न किञ्चिदवशिष्यते ।
यदयं निहतः शत्रुरस्माकं महिषासुरः ॥३२॥
भगवत्या कृतं सर्वं न किञ्चिदवशिष्यते ।

32. devā ūcuḥ .
bhagavatyā kṛtaṃ sarvaṃ na kiñcidavaśiṣyate .
yadayaṃ nihataḥ śatrurasmākaṃ mahiṣāsuraḥ.
bhagavatyā kṛtaṃ sarvaṃ na kiñcidavaśiṣyate .
yadayaṃ nihataḥ śatrurasmākaṃ mahiṣāsuraḥ.

devāḥ ūcuḥ bhagavatyā kṛtam sarvam na kiñcit
avaśiṣyate yat ayam nihataḥ śatruḥ asmākam mahiṣāsuraḥ

32.
The gods (devāḥ) said: "Everything has been accomplished by the venerable Goddess; nothing remains to be done, because this enemy of ours, Mahiṣāsura, has been slain."
यदि चापि वरो देयस्त्वयास्माकं महेश्वरि ।
संस्मृता संस्मृता त्वं नो हिंसेथाः परमापदः ॥३३॥

33.
O Great Goddess (Maheśvarī), if a boon is indeed to be granted by you to us, then whenever you are remembered, may you destroy our greatest calamities.
यश्च मर्त्यः स्तवैरेभिस्त्वां स्तोष्यत्यमलानने ।
तस्य वित्तर्धिविभवैर्धनदारादिसम्पदाम् ।
वृद्धयेऽस्मात्प्रसन्ना त्वं भवेथाः सर्वदाम्बिके ॥३४॥
तस्य वित्तर्धिविभवैर्धनदारादिसम्पदाम् ।

vṛddhaye'smātprasannā tvaṃ bhavethāḥ sarvadāmbike.

yaḥ ca martyaḥ stavaiḥ ebhiḥ tvām
stoṣyati amalanane tasya vittardhivibhavaiḥ
dhanadārādisampadām vṛddhaye asmāt
prasannā tvam bhavethāḥ sarvadāmbike
stoṣyati amalanane tasya vittardhivibhavaiḥ
dhanadārādisampadām vṛddhaye asmāt

34.
O pure-faced one (amalānane), and whichever mortal praises you with these hymns, may you, O Ambikā, the giver of all (sarvadāmbike), become pleased by this (praise) for him, to bring about the increase of his wealth, wives, and other possessions through abundant wealth, prosperity, and power.

The sage said: 'O King, thus appeased by the gods for the sake of the world and for her own (ātman) sake, Bhadrakālī, having said "So be it," disappeared.'
इत्येतत्कथितं भूप सम्भूता सा यथा पुरा ।
देवी देवशरीरेभ्यो जगत्त्रयहितैषिणी ॥३६॥

O King (bhūpa), thus this has been narrated: how the Goddess, desiring the welfare of the three worlds, formerly manifested from the bodies of the gods.
पुनश्च गौरीदेहात् सा समुद्भूता यथाभवत् ।
वधाय दुष्टदैत्यानां तथा शुम्भनिशुम्भयोः ॥३७॥

I will explain how she again manifested from the body of Gaurī, for the purpose of slaying wicked demons, including Śumbha and Niśumbha.
