ऋषिरुवाच ।
पुरा शुम्भनिशुम्भाभ्यामसुराभ्यां शचीपतेः ।
त्रैलोक्यं यज्ञभागाश्च हृता मदबलाश्रयात् ॥१॥

1. ṛṣiruvāca .
purā śumbhaniśumbhābhyāmasurābhyāṃ śacīpateḥ .
trailokyaṃ yajñabhāgāśca hṛtā madabalāśrayāt.
purā śumbhaniśumbhābhyāmasurābhyāṃ śacīpateḥ .
trailokyaṃ yajñabhāgāśca hṛtā madabalāśrayāt.

ṛṣiḥ uvāca purā śumbhaniśumbhābhyām asurābhyām
śacīpateḥ trailokyam yajñabhāgāḥ ca hṛtā madabalāśrayāt
śacīpateḥ trailokyam yajñabhāgāḥ ca hṛtā madabalāśrayāt

The sage said: Formerly, the two demons, Śumbha and Niśumbha, relying on their arrogance and might, seized the three worlds and the shares of the Vedic rituals (yajña) from the lord of Śacī (Indra).
तावेव सूर्यतां तद्वदधिकारं तथैन्दवम् ।
कौबेरमथ याम्यं च चक्राते वरुणस्य च ॥२॥
कौबेरमथ याम्यं च चक्राते वरुणस्य च ॥२॥
2. tāveva sūryatāṃ tadvadadhikāraṃ tathaindavam .
kauberamatha yāmyaṃ ca cakrāte varuṇasya ca.
kauberamatha yāmyaṃ ca cakrāte varuṇasya ca.

tau eva sūryatām tadvat adhikāram tathā aindavam
kauberam atha yāmyam ca cakrāte varuṇasya ca
kauberam atha yāmyam ca cakrāte varuṇasya ca

Indeed, those two (demons) assumed the position of the sun, and similarly the authority of Indra, as well as the positions of Kubera, Yama, and Varuṇa.
तावेव पवनर्धि च चक्रतुर्वह्निकर्म च ।
अन्येषाञ्चाधिकारान् स स्वयमेवाधितिष्ठति ।
ततो देवा विनिर्धूता भ्रष्टराज्याः पराजिताः ॥३॥
अन्येषाञ्चाधिकारान् स स्वयमेवाधितिष्ठति ।
ततो देवा विनिर्धूता भ्रष्टराज्याः पराजिताः ॥३॥
3. tāveva pavanardhi ca cakraturvahnikarma ca .
anyeṣāñcādhikārān sa svayamevādhitiṣṭhati .
tato devā vinirdhūtā bhraṣṭarājyāḥ parājitāḥ.
anyeṣāñcādhikārān sa svayamevādhitiṣṭhati .
tato devā vinirdhūtā bhraṣṭarājyāḥ parājitāḥ.

tāu eva pavanardhi ca cakratuḥ
vahnikarma ca anyeṣām ca adhikārān saḥ
svayam eva adhitiṣṭhati tataḥ devāḥ
vinirdhūtāḥ bhraṣṭarājyāḥ parājitāḥ
vahnikarma ca anyeṣām ca adhikārān saḥ
svayam eva adhitiṣṭhati tataḥ devāḥ
vinirdhūtāḥ bhraṣṭarājyāḥ parājitāḥ

Indeed, those two (Śumbha and Niśumbha) performed the functions of Vāyu (the wind god) and Agni (the fire god). And he (Śumbha) himself took charge of the offices of the other deities. Consequently, the gods were expelled, stripped of their kingdoms, and utterly defeated.
हृताधिकारास्त्रिदशास्ताभ्यां सर्वे निराकृताः ।
महासुराभ्यां तां देवीं संस्मरन्त्यपराजिताम् ॥४॥
महासुराभ्यां तां देवीं संस्मरन्त्यपराजिताम् ॥४॥
4. hṛtādhikārāstridaśāstābhyāṃ sarve nirākṛtāḥ .
mahāsurābhyāṃ tāṃ devīṃ saṃsmarantyaparājitām.

mahāsurābhyām tām devīm saṃsmaranti aparājitām

Deprived of their offices, all the deities were cast aside by those two great asuras. They (the gods) then remembered that undefeated Goddess (Devī Aparājitā).
तयास्माकं वरो दत्तो यथाऽपत्सु स्मृताखिलाः ।
भवतां नाशयिष्यामि तत्क्षणात् परमापदः ॥५॥
भवतां नाशयिष्यामि तत्क्षणात् परमापदः ॥५॥
5. tayāsmākaṃ varo datto yathā'patsu smṛtākhilāḥ .
bhavatāṃ nāśayiṣyāmi tatkṣaṇāt paramāpadaḥ.
bhavatāṃ nāśayiṣyāmi tatkṣaṇāt paramāpadaḥ.

tayā asmākam varaḥ dattaḥ yathā āpatsu smṛtākhilāḥ
bhavatām nāśayiṣyāmi tatkṣaṇāt paramāpadaḥ
bhavatām nāśayiṣyāmi tatkṣaṇāt paramāpadaḥ

By Her, a boon was granted to us: 'When all of you remember me in times of calamity, I will instantly destroy your greatest adversities.'
इति कृत्वा मतिं देवा हिमवन्तं नगेश्वरम् ।
जग्मुस्तत्र ततो देवीं विष्णुमायां प्रतुष्टुवुः ॥६॥

6. iti kṛtvā matiṃ devā himavantaṃ nageśvaram .
jagmustatra tato devīṃ viṣṇumāyāṃ pratuṣṭuvuḥ.

iti kṛtvā matim devāḥ himavantam naga-īśvaram
jagmuḥ tatra tataḥ devīm viṣṇumāyām pratuṣṭuvuḥ

Having thus made this resolve, the gods went to Himavat, the lord of mountains. There, they then praised the Goddess, the divine illusion (māyā) of Viṣṇu.
देवा ऊचुः ।
नमो देव्यै महादेव्यै शिवायै सततं नमः ।
नमः प्रकृत्यै भद्रायै नियताः प्रणताः स्म ताम् ॥७॥
नमो देव्यै महादेव्यै शिवायै सततं नमः ।
नमः प्रकृत्यै भद्रायै नियताः प्रणताः स्म ताम् ॥७॥
7. devā ūcuḥ .
namo devyai mahādevyai śivāyai satataṃ namaḥ .
namaḥ prakṛtyai bhadrāyai niyatāḥ praṇatāḥ sma tām.
namo devyai mahādevyai śivāyai satataṃ namaḥ .
namaḥ prakṛtyai bhadrāyai niyatāḥ praṇatāḥ sma tām.

devā ūcuḥ namaḥ devyai mahādevyai śivāyai satatam namaḥ
namaḥ prakṛtyai bhadrāyai niyatāḥ praṇatāḥ sma tām

The gods said: Salutations to the Goddess, to the Great Goddess, to Śivā (the Auspicious One), constant salutations. Salutations to Prakṛti (primordial nature), to Bhadrā (the Benevolent One); we are disciplined and bowed down to Her.
रौद्रायै नमो नित्यायौ गौर्यै धात्र्यै नमो नमः ।
नमो जगत्प्रतिष्ठायै देव्यै कृत्यै नमो नमः ॥८॥
नमो जगत्प्रतिष्ठायै देव्यै कृत्यै नमो नमः ॥८॥
8. raudrāyai namo nityāyau gauryai dhātryai namo namaḥ .
namo jagatpratiṣṭhāyai devyai kṛtyai namo namaḥ.

Salutations to Raudrā (the Fierce One), to the Eternal One, to Gaurī (the Fair One), to Dhātrī (the Supporter), repeated salutations. Salutations to Her who is the foundation of the world, to the Goddess, to Kṛti (the Creator), repeated salutations.
द्योत्स्त्रायै चेन्दुरूपिण्यै सुखायै सततं नमः ।
कल्याण्यै प्रणतां वृद्ध्यै सिद्ध्यै कुर्मो नमो नमः ॥९॥
कल्याण्यै प्रणतां वृद्ध्यै सिद्ध्यै कुर्मो नमो नमः ॥९॥
9. dyotstrāyai cendurūpiṇyai sukhāyai satataṃ namaḥ .
kalyāṇyai praṇatāṃ vṛddhyai siddhyai kurmo namo namaḥ.
kalyāṇyai praṇatāṃ vṛddhyai siddhyai kurmo namo namaḥ.

jyotsnāyai ca indurūpiṇyai sukhāyai satatam namaḥ
kalyāṇyai praṇatām vṛddhyai siddhyai kurmaḥ namaḥ namaḥ

Constant salutations to Jyotsnā (Moonlight) and to the moon-bodied one, to Sukha (Happiness). We offer repeated salutations to Kalyāṇī (the Benevolent One), to the revered one, to Vṛddhi (Prosperity), to Siddhi (Accomplishment).
नैरृत्यै भूभृतां लक्ष्म्यै शर्वाण्यै ते नमो नमः ।
दुर्गायै दुर्गपारायै सारायै सर्वकारिण्यै ।
ख्यात्यै तथैव कृष्णायै धूम्रायै सततं नमः ॥१०॥
दुर्गायै दुर्गपारायै सारायै सर्वकारिण्यै ।
ख्यात्यै तथैव कृष्णायै धूम्रायै सततं नमः ॥१०॥
10. nairṛtyai bhūbhṛtāṃ lakṣmyai śarvāṇyai te namo namaḥ .
durgāyai durgapārāyai sārāyai sarvakāriṇyai .
khyātyai tathaiva kṛṣṇāyai dhūmrāyai satataṃ namaḥ.
durgāyai durgapārāyai sārāyai sarvakāriṇyai .
khyātyai tathaiva kṛṣṇāyai dhūmrāyai satataṃ namaḥ.

nairṛtyai bhūbhṛtām lakṣmyai śarvāṇyai
te namaḥ namaḥ durgāyai durgapārāyai
sārāyai sarvakāriṇyai khyātyai tathā
eva kṛṣṇāyai dhūmrāyai satatam namaḥ
te namaḥ namaḥ durgāyai durgapārāyai
sārāyai sarvakāriṇyai khyātyai tathā
eva kṛṣṇāyai dhūmrāyai satatam namaḥ

To Nairṛtī, to the Lakṣmī of kings (or mountains), to Śarvāṇī, repeated salutations to you. To Durgā, to Her who helps cross difficulties, to Sārā (the Essence), to Sarvakāriṇī (the Doer of All). And similarly, constant salutations to Khyāti (Fame/Knowledge), to Kṛṣṇā (the Dark One), to Dhūmrā (the Smoky One).
अतिसौम्यातिरौद्रायै नतास्तस्यै नमो नमः ।
मनो जगत्प्रतिष्ठायै देव्यै कृत्यै नमो नमः ॥११॥
मनो जगत्प्रतिष्ठायै देव्यै कृत्यै नमो नमः ॥११॥
11. atisaumyātiraudrāyai natāstasyai namo namaḥ .
mano jagatpratiṣṭhāyai devyai kṛtyai namo namaḥ.
mano jagatpratiṣṭhāyai devyai kṛtyai namo namaḥ.

manaḥ jagatpratiṣṭhāyai devyai kṛtyai namaḥ namaḥ

We bow to her who is exceedingly gentle and exceedingly fierce. Salutations, salutations to her! Salutations, salutations to the Goddess who is the foundation of the mind (manas) and the universe, and who embodies all action (kṛti).
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु विष्णुमायेति शब्दिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥१२॥
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥१२॥
12. yā devī sarvabhūteṣu viṣṇumāyeti śabditā .

To that Goddess who, residing in all beings (bhūta), is known as the divine illusion (māyā) of Viṣṇu, salutations, salutations, salutations to her, salutations again and again!
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु चेतनेत्यभिधीयते ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥१३॥
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥१३॥
13. yā devī sarvabhūteṣu cetanetyabhidhīyate .
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ.
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ.

yā devī sarvabhūteṣu cetanā iti abhidhīyate |
namaḥ tasyai namaḥ tasyai namaḥ tasyai namaḥ namaḥ
namaḥ tasyai namaḥ tasyai namaḥ tasyai namaḥ namaḥ

To that Goddess who, residing in all beings (bhūta), is called consciousness (cetanā), salutations, salutations, salutations to her, salutations again and again!
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु बुद्धिरूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥१४॥
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥१४॥
14. yā devī sarvabhūteṣu buddhirūpeṇa saṃsthitā .

To that Goddess who is established in all beings (bhūta) in the form of intellect (buddhi), salutations, salutations, salutations to her, salutations again and again!
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु निद्रारूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै मनो नमः ॥१५॥
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै मनो नमः ॥१५॥
15. yā devī sarvabhūteṣu nidrārūpeṇa saṃsthitā .
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai mano namaḥ.
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai mano namaḥ.

To that Goddess who is present in all beings in the form of sleep, salutations to her, salutations to her, salutations to her! My mind offers profound obeisance.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु क्षुधारूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥१६॥
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥१६॥
16. yā devī sarvabhūteṣu kṣudhārūpeṇa saṃsthitā .
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ.

To that Goddess who is present in all beings in the form of hunger, salutations to her, salutations to her, salutations to her! My profound obeisance.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु च्छायारूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥१७॥
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥१७॥

To that Goddess who is present in all beings in the form of shadow, salutations to her, salutations to her, salutations to her! My profound obeisance.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शक्तिरूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥१८॥
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥१८॥
18. yā devī sarvabhūteṣu śaktirūpeṇa saṃsthitā .
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ.
namastasyai namastasyai namastasyai namo namaḥ.

To that Goddess who is present in all beings in the form of power (śakti), salutations to her, salutations to her, salutations to her! My profound obeisance.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु तृष्णारूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥१९॥
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥१९॥
19. yā devī sarvabhūteṣu tṛṣṇārūpeṇa saṃsthitā .

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु क्षान्तिरूपेण संस्थिता ।

21. yā devī sarvabhūteṣu jātirūpeṇa saṃsthitā .

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु लज्जारूपेण संस्थिता ।

नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥२२॥

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु शान्तिरूपेण संस्थिता ।

नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥२३॥
23. yā devī sarvabhūteṣu śāntirūpeṇa saṃsthitā .

To that Goddess who resides in all beings as faith (śraddhā), salutations to her, salutations to her, salutations to her, salutations again and again.
या देवी सर्वभूतेषु कान्तिरूपेण संस्थिता ।
नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः ॥२५॥

To that Goddess who resides in all beings as radiance, salutations to her, salutations to her, salutations to her, salutations again and again.

Salutations again and again to that all-pervading Goddess (vyāptidevī) who is the presiding deity of the senses and all beings, and is constantly present in all creatures.

May that Goddess (īśvarī), who was formerly praised by the gods for refuge in their desired objectives, and likewise worshipped by the lord of asuras in those days, she who is the cause of auspiciousness, bring us welfare and remove all calamities.
या साम्प्रतं चोद्धतदैत्यतापितैर् अस्माभिरीशा च सुरैर्नमस्यते ।
या च स्मृता तत्क्षणमेव हन्ति नः सर्वापदो भक्तिविनम्कमूर्तिभिः ॥३९॥

She who is presently worshipped as the sovereign ruler by us gods, tormented as we are by arrogant demons; and who, when remembered, instantly destroys all our calamities for those whose forms are bowed in devotion.

The sage said: O delight of kings, while the gods were thus engaged in praise and so on, Pārvatī arrived there to bathe in the waters of the Gaṅgā.

She of beautiful eyebrows asked those gods, 'Who is being praised here by all of you?' Just then, from her body-sheath (kośa), Śivā emerged and replied.

This hymn is offered to me by the gods who have been scorned by the demon Śumbha, and who, having gathered, were defeated in battle by Niśumbha.

Because Ambikā emerged from the bodily sheath (śarīrakośa) of that Pārvatī, she is therefore celebrated in all worlds as Kauśikī.

But when she (Kauśikī) had emerged, that Pārvatī also became dark and was known as Kālikā, dwelling in the Himalayas.

Then Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa, the two servants of Śumbha and Niśumbha, saw Ambikā, who was displaying an exceedingly charming and supreme form.

काप्यास्ते स्त्री महाराज भासयन्ती हिमाचलम् ॥४६॥

And by them, she was reported to Śumbha (saying), "O Great King, there is some exceedingly charming (sumanohara) woman (strī) who is illuminating the Himalayas."

O lord of asuras, such an excellent form has never been seen by anyone anywhere. Understand that she is surely a goddess, and she should be taken.

O lord of daityas, that jewel among women, possessing extremely beautiful limbs and illuminating all directions with her splendor, is indeed present. You ought to see her.

Airavata, the finest elephant (gajaratna), was brought from Purandara (Indra). Likewise, this Pārijāta tree and the horse Uccaiḥśravas have also been acquired.

रत्नभूतमिहानीतं यदासीद्वेधसोऽद्भुतम् ॥५१॥

This celestial chariot (vimāna), adorned with swans, stands in your courtyard. It was brought here as a jewel, a wondrous creation of Brahma.

This treasure, called Mahāpadma, was brought from Kubera, the lord of wealth. Furthermore, the ocean presented a garland adorned with unfading lotuses.

Your umbrella, received from Varuna, which drips gold, stands in your house. Similarly, this excellent chariot, which formerly belonged to Prajapati, is also present.
मृत्योरुत्क्रान्तिदा नाम शक्तिरीश त्वया हृता ।

O Lord (īśa), you have seized the power (śakti) named "Bestower of Transcendence from Death." The noose of the lord of waters (salilarāja) is now in your brother's possession.

All varieties of jewels born from the ocean (belong to) Niśumbha. Moreover, the fire god (Agni) also gave you two fire-purified garments.

स्त्रीरत्नमेषा कल्याणी त्वया कस्मान्न गृह्यते ॥५६॥

Thus, O king of demons, all jewels have been brought to you. Why is this jewel of a woman, the beautiful one, not taken by you?

प्रेषयामास सुग्रीवं दूतं देव्या महासुरः ॥५७॥

The sage said: Having heard these words of Caṇḍa and Muṇḍa, that Śumbha, the great demon, then sent Sugrīva as a messenger to the goddess.

इति चेति च वक्तव्या सा गत्वा वचनान्मम ।
यथा चाभ्येति संप्रीत्या तथा कार्यं त्वया लघु ॥५८॥

Śumbha said: "Having gone, you must convey these specific words to her, words from my command. And you must act quickly so that she comes here willingly and with great affection."
स तत्र गत्वा यत्रास्ते शैलोद्देशेऽतिशोभने ।
तां च देवीं ततः प्राह श्लक्ष्णं मधुरया गिरा ॥५९॥

He went there, to the exceedingly beautiful mountain region where she resided, and then addressed that goddess gently with a sweet voice.

दूतोऽहं प्रेषितस्तेन त्वत्सकाशमिहागतः ॥६०॥

The messenger said: "O Goddess, I am a messenger sent by Shumbha, the lord of demons, who is the supreme ruler in all three worlds. I have come here to your presence."

निर्जिताखिलदैत्यारिः स यदाह शृणुष्व तत् ॥६१॥

Listen to what he, whose command is always unimpeded among all divine beings and who has conquered all his demon enemies, has to say.

यज्ञभागानहं सर्वानुपाश्नामि पृथक् पृथक् ॥६२॥

All three worlds are mine; my gods are subservient to me. I alone enjoy all portions of the sacrificial rites (yajña), each one individually.
त्रैलोक्ये वररत्नानि मम वश्यान्यशेषतः ।
तथैव गजरत्नं च हृत्वा देवेन्द्रवाहनम् ॥६३॥

63. trailokye vararatnāni mama vaśyānyaśeṣataḥ .

All the finest jewels in the three worlds are completely under my sway. In the same way, I have seized the excellent elephant, the vehicle of the lord of the gods (Indra).
क्षीरोदमथनोद्भूतमश्वरत्नं ममामरैः ।
उच्चैः श्रवससंज्ञं तत्प्रणिपत्य समर्पितम् ॥६४॥

The excellent horse named Uchchaiḥśravas, which arose from the churning of the milk ocean, was humbly offered to me by the immortals.
यानि चान्यानि देवेषु गन्धर्वेषूरगेषु च ।
रत्नभूतानि भूतानि तानि मय्येव शोभने ॥६५॥

65. yāni cānyāni deveṣu gandharveṣūrageṣu ca .

And whichever other beings, jewel-like in their essence, are found among the gods, Gandharvas, and serpents - all those indeed exist within me, O beautiful one.
स्त्रीरत्नभूतां त्वां देवि लोके मन्यामहे वयम् ।
सा त्वमस्मानुपागच्छ यतो रत्नभुजो वयम् ॥६६॥

66. strīratnabhūtāṃ tvāṃ devi loke manyāmahe vayam .

O goddess, we consider you in this world to be an excellent woman. Therefore, you should approach us, because we are the possessors of jewels.
मां वा ममानुजं वापि निशुम्भमुरुविक्रमम् ।
भज त्वं चञ्चलापाङ्गि रत्नभूतासि वै यतः ॥६७॥

67. māṃ vā mamānujaṃ vāpi niśumbhamuruvikramam .

O restless-eyed one, choose me or my younger brother, Niśumbha, who possesses great valor, for you are indeed a precious jewel.
परमैश्वर्यमतुलं प्राप्स्यसे मत्परिग्रहात् ।
एतद् बुद्ध्या समालोच्य मत्परिग्रहतां व्रज ॥६८॥

You will obtain incomparable, supreme sovereignty by accepting me. Therefore, having thoroughly considered this with your intellect, come and accept me.

दुर्गा भगवती भद्रा ययेदं धार्यते जगत् ॥६९॥

The sage said: Thus addressed, that Goddess, with a deep internal smile, then spoke. She is Durgā, the divine, the auspicious one, by whom this universe is sustained.

सत्यमुक्तत्वया नात्र मिथ्या किञ्चित्त्वयोदितम् ।
त्रैलोक्याधिपतिः सुम्भो निशुम्भश्चापि तादृशः ॥७०॥
सत्यमुक्तत्वया नात्र मिथ्या किञ्चित्त्वयोदितम् ।

The Goddess said: What you have spoken is true; nothing false has been uttered by you here. Śumbha is indeed the lord of the three worlds, and Niśumbha is also like him.
किं त्वत्र यत्प्रतिज्ञातं मिथ्या तत्क्रियते कथम् ।
श्रूयतामल्पबुद्धित्वात् प्रतिज्ञा या कृता पुरा ॥७१॥

But how can that which was vowed here be rendered false? Listen to the vow that was made previously due to my limited understanding.
यो मां जयति संग्रामे यो मे दर्पं व्यपोहति ।
यो मे प्रतिबलो लोके स मे भर्ता भविष्यति ॥७२॥

Whoever conquers me in battle, whoever removes my arrogance, whoever is my match in strength in the world - he shall be my husband.
तदागच्छतु शुम्भोऽत्र निशुम्भो वा महासुरः ।
मां जित्वा किं चिरेणात्र पाणि गृह्णातु मे लघु ॥७३॥

73. tadāgacchatu śumbho'tra niśumbho vā mahāsuraḥ .
māṃ jitvā kiṃ cireṇātra pāṇi gṛhṇātu me laghu.

tat āgacchatu śumbhaḥ atra niśumbhaḥ vā mahāsuraḥ

Therefore, let Śumbha come here, or Niśumbha, the great asura. Having conquered me, why delay? Let him swiftly take my hand here.
दूत उवाच ।
अवलिप्तासि मैवं त्वं देवि ब्रूहि ममाग्रतः ।
त्रैलोक्ये कः पुमांस्तिष्ठेदग्रे शुम्भनिशुम्भयोः ॥७४॥

The messenger said: "You are arrogant! O Goddess, do not speak thus in my presence. Who among men in the three worlds can stand before Śumbha and Niśumbha?"

तिष्ठन्ति संमुखे देवि किं पुनः स्त्री त्वमेकिका ॥७५॥

O goddess, even all the gods do not stand in battle facing other demons. How much less can you, a lone woman, do so?
इन्द्राद्याः सकला देवास्तस्थुर्येषां न संयुगे ।
शुम्भादीनां कथं तेषां स्त्री प्रयास्यसि संमुखम् ॥७६॥

All the gods, led by Indra, did not stand in battle against those (Śumbha and others). How then will you, a woman, go to face them?

केशाकर्षणनिर्धूतगौरवा मा गमिष्यसि ॥७७॥

77.
As I have instructed you, go now to Śumbha and Niśumbha. Do not go there, however, in a state where your dignity is destroyed by having your hair pulled.
देव्युवाच ।
एवमेतद् बली शुम्भो निशुम्भश्चातिवीर्यवान् ।
किं करोमि प्रतिज्ञा मे यदनालोचिता पुरा ॥७८॥
एवमेतद् बली शुम्भो निशुम्भश्चातिवीर्यवान् ।
किं करोमि प्रतिज्ञा मे यदनालोचिता पुरा ॥७८॥
78. devyuvāca .
evametad balī śumbho niśumbhaścātivīryavān .
kiṃ karomi pratijñā me yadanālocitā purā.

devī uvāca evam etat balī śumbhaḥ niśumbhaḥ ca

The goddess said, "This is indeed true: Śumbha is powerful, and Niśumbha is extremely valorous. But what can I do? My vow, which I made earlier, was ill-considered."
स त्वं गच्छ मयोक्तं ते यदेतत्सर्वमादृतः ।
तदाचक्ष्वासुरेन्द्राय स च युक्तं करोतु तत् ॥७९॥
तदाचक्ष्वासुरेन्द्राय स च युक्तं करोतु तत् ॥७९॥
79. sa tvaṃ gaccha mayoktaṃ te yadetatsarvamādṛtaḥ .
tadācakṣvāsurendrāya sa ca yuktaṃ karotu tat.

स त्वं गच्छ मया उक्तं ते यत् एतत् सर्वम् आदृतः
तत् आचक्ष्व असुरेन्द्राय स च युक्तं करोतु तत्
तत् आचक्ष्व असुरेन्द्राय स च युक्तं करोतु तत्

Therefore, you should go. Having respectfully taken all that has been told to you by me, convey it to the lord of the asuras (asurendra). Let him then do what is proper concerning it.
