मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
सावर्णिकमिदं सम्यक्प्रोक्तं मन्वन्तरं तव ।
तथैव देवीमाहात्म्ये महिषासुरघातनम् ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .
sāvarṇikamidaṃ samyakproktaṃ manvantaraṃ tava .
tathaiva devīmāhātmye mahiṣāsuraghātanam.

manvantaram tava tathā eva devīmāhātmye mahiṣāsuraghātanam
1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: 'This Sāvarṇika Manvantara has been properly narrated to you. Similarly, the slaying of Mahiṣāsura is described in the Devīmāhātmya.'
उत्पत्तयश्च या देव्या मातॄणां च महाहवे ।
तथैव सम्भवो देव्याश्चामुण्डाया यथा भवः ॥२॥
2. utpattayaśca yā devyā mātṝṇāṃ ca mahāhave .
tathaiva sambhavo devyāścāmuṇḍāyā yathā bhavaḥ.
2. utpattayaḥ ca yāḥ devyāḥ mātṝṇām ca mahāhave
tathā eva sambhavaḥ devyāḥ cāmuṇḍāyāḥ yathā bhavaḥ
2. And the manifestations of the Goddess, and of the Mothers in the great battle; similarly, the origin of the Goddess Chāmuṇḍā (cāmuṇḍā), just as it occurred.
शिवदूत्याश्च माहात्म्यं वधः शुम्भनिशुम्भयोः ।
रक्तबीजवधश्चैव सर्वमेतत्तवोदितम् ॥३॥
3. śivadūtyāśca māhātmyaṃ vadhaḥ śumbhaniśumbhayoḥ .
raktabījavadhaścaiva sarvametattavoditam.
3. śivadūtyāḥ ca māhātmyam vadhaḥ śumbhaniśumbhayoḥ
raktabījavadhaḥ ca eva sarvam etat tava uditam
3. You have narrated all this: the glory of Śivadūtī, the killing of Śumbha and Niśumbha, and also the slaying of Raktabīja.
श्रूयतां मुनिशार्दूल सावर्णिकमथापरम् ।
दत्तपुत्रश्च सावर्णिर्भावी यो नवमो मनुः ॥४॥
4. śrūyatāṃ muniśārdūla sāvarṇikamathāparam .
dattaputraśca sāvarṇirbhāvī yo navamo manuḥ.
4. śrūyatām muniśārdūla sāvarṇikam atha aparam
dattaputraḥ ca sāvarṇiḥ bhāvī yaḥ navamaḥ manuḥ
4. O foremost among sages (muniśārdūla), now listen to another account, concerning Sāvarṇi, who will be the ninth Manu and an adopted son.
कथयामि मनोस्तस्य ये देवा मुनयो नृपाः ।
पारा मरीचिभर्गाश्च सुधर्माणस्तथा सुराः ॥५॥
5. kathayāmi manostasya ye devā munayo nṛpāḥ .
pārā marīcibhargāśca sudharmāṇastathā surāḥ.
5. kathayāmi manoḥ tasya ye devāḥ munayaḥ nṛpāḥ
pārāḥ marīcibhargāḥ ca sudharmāṇaḥ tathā surāḥ
5. I will narrate about that Manu, specifically about the gods, sages, and kings who will exist in his age. These include the Pāras, Marīcis, Bhargas, and also the Sudharmans among the divine beings.
एते त्रिधा भविष्यन्ति सर्वे द्वादशका गणाः ।
तेषामिन्द्रो भविष्यस्तु सहस्राक्षो महाबलः ॥६॥
6. ete tridhā bhaviṣyanti sarve dvādaśakā gaṇāḥ .
teṣāmindro bhaviṣyastu sahasrākṣo mahābalaḥ.
6. ete tridhā bhaviṣyanti sarve dvādaśakāḥ gaṇāḥ
teṣām indraḥ bhaviṣyaḥ tu sahasrākṣaḥ mahābalaḥ
6. All these groups, each consisting of twelve (deities), will be of three kinds. Among them, the greatly powerful and thousand-eyed Indra will be the chief.
साम्प्रतं कार्तिकेयो यो वह्निपुत्रः षडाननः ।
अद्भुतो नाम शक्रोऽसौ भावी तस्यान्तरे मनोः ॥७॥
7. sāmprataṃ kārtikeyo yo vahniputraḥ ṣaḍānanaḥ .
adbhuto nāma śakro'sau bhāvī tasyāntare manoḥ.
7. sāmpratam kārtikeyaḥ yaḥ vahniputraḥ ṣaḍānanaḥ
adbhutaḥ nāma śakraḥ asau bhāvī tasya antare manoḥ
7. Currently, Kartikeya, who is the son of Agni and has six faces, will be the Indra named Adbhuta during the period of that Manu.
मेधातिथिर्वसुः सत्यो ज्योतिष्मान्द्युतिमांस्तथा ।
सप्तर्षयोऽन्यः सबलस्तथान्यो हव्यवाहनः ॥८॥
8. medhātithirvasuḥ satyo jyotiṣmāndyutimāṃstathā .
saptarṣayo'nyaḥ sabalastathānyo havyavāhanaḥ.
8. medhātithiḥ vasuḥ satyaḥ jyotiṣmān dyutimān tathā
saptarṣayaḥ anyaḥ sabalaḥ tathā anyaḥ havyavāhanaḥ
8. Medhatithi, Vasu, Satya, Jyotishman, and Dyutiman are mentioned; and among the seven sages (saptarṣayaḥ), another is Sabala, and yet another is Havyavahana (Agni).
धृष्टकेतुर्बर्हकेतुः खड्गहस्तो निरामयः ।
पृथुश्रवास्तथार्चिष्मान्भूरिद्युम्नो बृहद्भयः ॥९॥
9. dhṛṣṭaketurbarhaketuḥ khaḍgahasto nirāmayaḥ .
pṛthuśravāstathārciṣmānbhūridyumno bṛhadbhayaḥ.
9. dhṛṣṭaketuḥ barhaketuḥ khaḍgahastaḥ nirāmayaḥ
pṛthuśravāḥ tathā arciṣmān bhūridyumnaḥ bṛhadbhayaḥ
9. Dhristaketu, Barhaketu, Khadgahasta, Niramaya, Prithushravas, Arcishman, Bhuridymna, and Brihadbhaya (are listed as the sons of the king).
एते नृपसुतास्तस्य दत्तपुत्रस्य वै नृपाः ।
मनोस्तु दशमस्यान्यच्छृणु मन्वन्तरं द्विज ॥१०॥
10. ete nṛpasutāstasya dattaputrasya vai nṛpāḥ .
manostu daśamasyānyacchṛṇu manvantaraṃ dvija.
10. ete nṛpasutāḥ tasya dattaputrasya vai nṛpāḥ
manoḥ tu daśamasya anyat śṛṇu manvantaram dvija
10. These royal sons (mentioned previously) are indeed kings who belong to his (the Manu's) adopted son. But, O twice-born (dvija), hear now of other matters concerning the tenth Manu's (manvantara).
मन्वन्तरे च दशमे ब्रह्मपुत्रस्य धीमतः ।
सुखासीना निरुद्धाश्च द्विप्रकाराः सुराः स्मृताः ॥११॥
11. manvantare ca daśame brahmaputrasya dhīmataḥ .
sukhāsīnā niruddhāśca dviprakārāḥ surāḥ smṛtāḥ.
11. manvantare ca daśame brahmaputrasya dhīmataḥ
sukhāsīnāḥ niruddhāḥ ca dviprakārāḥ surāḥ smṛtāḥ
11. In the tenth manvantara, the gods (surāḥ) are remembered as being of two types - those comfortably settled and those restrained - and they belong to the wise son of Brahmā.
शतसंख्या हि ते देवा भविष्या भाविनो मनोः ।
यत्पुत्राणां शतं भावि तद्देवानां तदा शतम् ॥१२॥
12. śatasaṃkhyā hi te devā bhaviṣyā bhāvino manoḥ .
yatputrāṇāṃ śataṃ bhāvi taddevānāṃ tadā śatam.
12. śatasaṅkhyā hi te devāḥ bhaviṣyāḥ bhāvinaḥ manoḥ
yatputrāṇām śatam bhāvi tat devānām tadā śatam
12. Indeed, those gods, numbering one hundred, will be associated with the coming Manu; for just as there will be a hundred of his sons, so too will there be a hundred gods at that time.
शान्तिरिन्द्रस्तथा भावी सर्वैरिन्द्रगुणैर्युतः ।
सप्तर्षींस्तान्निबोध त्वं ये भविष्यन्ति वै तदा ॥१३॥
13. śāntirindrastathā bhāvī sarvairindraguṇairyutaḥ .
saptarṣīṃstānnibodha tvaṃ ye bhaviṣyanti vai tadā.
13. śāntiḥ indraḥ tathā bhāvī sarvaiḥ indraguṇaiḥ yutaḥ
saptarṣīn tān nibodha tvam ye bhaviṣyanti vai tadā
13. Śānti will be the Indra, endowed with all the characteristics of an Indra. And you (tvam) should know those seven sages (saptarṣi) who will certainly be present at that time.
आपोमूतिर्हविष्मांश्च सुकृती सत्य एव च ।
नाभागोऽप्रतिमश्चैव वासिष्ठश्चैव सप्तमः ॥१४॥
14. āpomūtirhaviṣmāṃśca sukṛtī satya eva ca .
nābhāgo'pratimaścaiva vāsiṣṭhaścaiva saptamaḥ.
14. āpomūrtiḥ haviṣmān ca sukṛtī satyaḥ eva ca nābhāgaḥ
apratimaḥ ca eva vāsiṣṭhaḥ ca eva saptamaḥ
14. Āpomūrti, Haviṣmān, Sukṛtī, and indeed Satya; Nābhāga, and Apratima, and Vāsiṣṭha as the seventh (saptarṣi).
सुक्षेत्रश्चोत्तमौजाश्च भूरिषेणश्च वीर्यवान् ।
शतानीकोऽथ वृषभो ह्यनमित्रो जयद्रथः ॥१५॥
15. sukṣetraścottamaujāśca bhūriṣeṇaśca vīryavān .
śatānīko'tha vṛṣabho hyanamitro jayadrathaḥ.
15. sukṣetraḥ ca uttamaujāḥ ca bhūriṣeṇaḥ ca vīryavān
śatānīkaḥ atha vṛṣabhaḥ hi anamitraḥ jayadrathaḥ
15. Sukṣetra, Uttamaujas, and Bhūriṣeṇa the powerful, along with Śatānīka, Vṛṣabha, Anamitra, and Jayadratha.
भूरिद्युम्नः सुपर्वा च तस्यैते तनया मनोः ।
भविष्या धर्मपुत्रस्य सावर्णस्यान्तरं शृणु ॥१६॥
16. bhūridyumnaḥ suparvā ca tasyaite tanayā manoḥ .
bhaviṣyā dharmaputrasya sāvarṇasyāntaraṃ śṛṇu.
16. bhūridyumnaḥ suparvā ca tasya ete tanayāḥ manoḥ
bhaviṣyāḥ dharmaputrasya sāvarṇasya antaram śṛṇu
16. Bhūridyumna and Suparvan, these are the sons of Manu. They will be the future progeny of Sāvarṇa, the son of Dharma (dharma). Listen now concerning his era (antara).
विहङ्गमाः कामगाश्च निर्माणरतयस्तथा ।
त्रिःप्रकारा भविष्यन्ति एकैकस्त्रिंशको गणः ॥१७॥
17. vihaṅgamāḥ kāmagāśca nirmāṇaratayastathā .
triḥprakārā bhaviṣyanti ekaikastriṃśako gaṇaḥ.
17. vihaṅgamāḥ kāmagāḥ ca nirmāṇaratayaḥ tathā triḥ
prakārāḥ bhaviṣyanti ekaekaḥ triṃśakaḥ gaṇaḥ
17. The Vihaṅgamas (celestial beings), the Kāmagas (those who move at will), and the Nirmāṇaratayas (those who delight in creation) - these three types will each consist of a group of thirty.
मासर्तुदिवसा ये तु निर्माणपतयस्तु ते ।
विहङ्गमा रात्रयोऽथ मौहूर्त्ताः कामगा गणाः ॥१८॥
18. māsartudivasā ye tu nirmāṇapatayastu te .
vihaṅgamā rātrayo'tha mauhūrttāḥ kāmagā gaṇāḥ.
18. māsartudivasāḥ ye tu nirmāṇapatayaḥ tu te
vihaṅgamāḥ rātrayaḥ atha mauhūrtāḥ kāmagāḥ gaṇāḥ
18. The months, seasons, and days are indeed the lords of creation (nirmāṇapatayaḥ). The Vihaṅgamas (celestial beings) are identified with the nights, and the Kāmagas (celestial beings) are the groups of "mauhūrtas" (specific time divisions).
इन्द्रो वृषाख्यो भविता तेषां प्रख्यातविक्रमः ।
हविष्मांश्च वरिष्ठश्च ऋष्टिरन्यस्तथारुणिः ॥१९॥
19. indro vṛṣākhyo bhavitā teṣāṃ prakhyātavikramaḥ .
haviṣmāṃśca variṣṭhaśca ṛṣṭiranyastathāruṇiḥ.
19. indraḥ vṛṣākhyaḥ bhavitā teṣām prakhyātavikramaḥ
haviṣmān ca variṣṭhaḥ ca ṛṣṭiḥ anyaḥ tathā aruṇiḥ
19. Among them, an Indra named Vṛṣa, renowned for his valor, will come into being. Also, Haviṣmān, Variṣṭha, R̥ṣṭi, and another named Aruṇi will be there.
निश्चरश्चानघश्चैव विष्टिश्चान्यो महामुनिः ।
सप्तर्षयोऽन्तरे तस्मिन्नग्नितेजाश्च सप्तमः ॥२०॥
20. niścaraścānaghaścaiva viṣṭiścānyo mahāmuniḥ .
saptarṣayo'ntare tasminnagnitejāśca saptamaḥ.
20. niścaraḥ ca anaghaḥ ca eva viṣṭiḥ ca anyaḥ mahāmuniḥ
saptarṣayaḥ antare tasmin agnitejāḥ ca saptamaḥ
20. And Niścara, Anagha, Viṣṭi, and another great sage will be there. In that particular manvantara, Agnitejas will be the seventh among the seven sages (saptarṣis).
सर्वत्रगः सुशर्मा च देवानीकः पुरूद्वहः ।
हेमधन्वा दृढायुश्च भाविनस्तत्सुता नृपाः ॥२१॥
21. sarvatragaḥ suśarmā ca devānīkaḥ purūdvahaḥ .
hemadhanvā dṛḍhāyuśca bhāvinastatsutā nṛpāḥ.
21. sarvatragaḥ suśarmā ca devānīkaḥ purūdvahaḥ
hemadhanvā dṛḍhāyuḥ ca bhāvinaḥ tatsutāḥ nṛpāḥ
21. Sarvatraga, Suśarmā, Devānīka, and Purūdvaha, along with Hemadhanvā and Dṛḍhāyu, will be their future royal sons (nṛpas).
द्वादशे रुद्रपुत्रस्य प्राप्ते मन्वन्तरे मनोः ।
सावर्णाख्याश्च ये देवा मुनयश्च शृणुष्व तान् ॥२२॥
22. dvādaśe rudraputrasya prāpte manvantare manoḥ .
sāvarṇākhyāśca ye devā munayaśca śṛṇuṣva tān.
22. dvādaśe rudraputrasya prāpte manvantare manoḥ
sāvarṇākhyāḥ ca ye devāḥ munayaḥ ca śṛṇuṣva tān
22. When the twelfth manvantara of Manu, the son of Rudra, arrives, listen to those gods and sages who are known as Sāvarṇa.
सुधर्माणः सुमनसो हरितो रोहितस्तथा ।
सुवर्णाश्च सुरास्तत्र पञ्चैते दशका गणाः ॥२३॥
23. sudharmāṇaḥ sumanaso harito rohitastathā .
suvarṇāśca surāstatra pañcaite daśakā gaṇāḥ.
23. sudharmāṇaḥ sumanasaḥ haritaḥ rohitaḥ tathā
suvarṇāḥ ca surāḥ tatra pañca ete daśakāḥ gaṇāḥ
23. There, these five groups, each consisting of ten (deities), are the Sudharmāṇas, Sumanasas, Haritas, Rohitas, and Suvarṇas (gods).
तेषामिन्द्रस्तु विज्ञेय ऋतधामा महाबलः ।
सर्वैरिन्द्रगुणैर्युक्ताः सप्तर्षीनपि मे शृणु ॥२४॥
24. teṣāmindrastu vijñeya ṛtadhāmā mahābalaḥ .
sarvairindraguṇairyuktāḥ saptarṣīnapi me śṛṇu.
24. teṣām indraḥ tu vijñeyaḥ ṛtadhāmā mahābalaḥ
sarvaiḥ indraguṇaiḥ yuktāḥ saptarṣīn api me śṛṇu
24. Among them, Ṛtadhāmā, the mighty one, should be known as Indra (chief of the gods), possessing all the qualities of Indra. Now, listen also from me about the seven sages (saptarṣīn).
द्युतिस्तपस्वी सुतपास्तपोमूर्तिस्तपोनिधिः ।
तपोरतिस्तथैवान्यः सप्तमस्तु तपोधृतिः ॥२५॥
25. dyutistapasvī sutapāstapomūrtistaponidhiḥ .
taporatistathaivānyaḥ saptamastu tapodhṛtiḥ.
25. dyutiḥ tapasvī sutapāḥ tapomūrtiḥ taponidhiḥ
taporatiḥ tathā eva anyaḥ saptamaḥ tu tapodhṛtiḥ
25. The seven (saptarṣīn) are Dyuti, Tapasvī (one who performs austerities (tapas)), Sutapā (one with excellent austerities (tapas)), Tapomūrti (the embodiment of austerities (tapas)), Taponidhi (the treasure of austerities (tapas)), Taporati (one who delights in austerities (tapas)), and the seventh is Tapodhṛti (one who is steadfast in austerities (tapas)).
देववानुपदेवश्च देवश्रेष्ठो विदूरथः ।
मित्रवान्मित्रविन्दश्च भाविनस्तत्सुता नृपाः ॥२६॥
26. devavānupadevaśca devaśreṣṭho vidūrathaḥ .
mitravānmitravindaśca bhāvinastatsutā nṛpāḥ.
26. devavān upadevaḥ ca devaśreṣṭhaḥ vidūrathaḥ
mitravān mitravindaḥ ca bhāvinaḥ tatsutāḥ nṛpāḥ
26. Devavān, Upadeva, Devaśreṣṭha, Vidūratha, Mitravān, and Mitravinda will be kings; they are their sons.
त्रयोदशस्य पर्याये रौच्याख्यस्य मनोः सुरान् ।
सप्तर्षींश्च नृपाञ्श्चैव गदतो मे निशामय ॥२७॥
27. trayodaśasya paryāye raucyākhyasya manoḥ surān .
saptarṣīṃśca nṛpāñścaiva gadato me niśāmaya.
27. trayodaśasya paryāye raucyākhyasya manoḥ surān
saptarṣīn ca nṛpān ca eva gadataḥ me niśāmaya
27. Now listen to me as I describe the gods, the seven sages, and indeed the kings belonging to the cycle of the thirteenth Manu, who is named Raucya.
सुधर्माणः सुरास्तत्र सुकर्माणस्तथापरे ।
सुशर्माणः सुरा ह्येते समस्ता मुनिसत्तम ॥२८॥
28. sudharmāṇaḥ surāstatra sukarmāṇastathāpare .
suśarmāṇaḥ surā hyete samastā munisattama.
28. sudharmāṇaḥ surāḥ tatra sukarmāṇaḥ tathā apare
suśarmāṇaḥ surāḥ hi ete samastāḥ munisattama
28. There, the gods (surāḥ) are Sudharmāṇas (possessing excellent intrinsic nature (dharma)), and likewise, others are Sukarmāṇas (performing virtuous actions (karma)). Indeed, all these gods collectively are known as Suśarmāṇas, O best of sages.
महाबलो महावीर्यस्तेषामिन्द्रो दिवस्पतिः ।
भविष्यानथ सप्तर्षीन्गदतो मे निशामय ॥२९॥
29. mahābalo mahāvīryasteṣāmindro divaspatiḥ .
bhaviṣyānatha saptarṣīngadato me niśāmaya.
29. mahābalaḥ mahāvīryaḥ teṣām indraḥ divaspatiḥ
bhaviṣyān atha saptarṣīn gadataḥ me niśāmaya
29. Among them, the greatly powerful and greatly valorous Indra is the lord of heaven. Now listen to me as I describe the future seven sages.
धृतिमानव्ययश्चैव तत्त्वदर्शी निरुत्सुकः ।
निर्मोहः सुतपाश्चान्यो निष्प्रकम्पश्च सप्तमः ॥३०॥
30. dhṛtimānavyayaścaiva tattvadarśī nirutsukaḥ .
nirmohaḥ sutapāścānyo niṣprakampaśca saptamaḥ.
30. dhṛtimān avyayaḥ ca eva tattvadarśī nirutsukaḥ
nirmohaḥ sutapāḥ ca anyaḥ niṣprakampaḥ ca saptamaḥ
30. They are Dhṛtimān, and indeed Avyaya, Tattvadarśī, Nirutsuka, Nirmoha, and another, Sutapā, and the seventh is Niṣprakampa.
चित्रसेनो विचित्रश्च नियतिर्निर्भयो दृढः ।
सुनेत्रः क्षत्रबुद्धिश्च सुव्रतश्चैव तत्सुताः ॥३१॥
31. citraseno vicitraśca niyatirnirbhayo dṛḍhaḥ .
sunetraḥ kṣatrabuddhiśca suvrataścaiva tatsutāḥ.
31. citrasenaḥ vicitraḥ ca niyatiḥ nirbhayaḥ dṛḍhaḥ
sunetraḥ kṣatrabuddhiḥ ca suvrataḥ ca eva tatsutāḥ
31. Citrasena, Vicitra, Niyati, Nirbhaya, Dṛḍha, Sunetra, Kṣatrabuddhi, and Suvrata were indeed his sons.
