मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
स तेन पितृवाक्येन भृशमुद्विग्नमानसः ।
कन्याभिलाषी विप्रर्षिः परिबभ्राम मेदिनीम् ॥१॥

1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca .

Mārkaṇḍeya said, "He, the brahmin-sage (viprarṣi), with his mind greatly agitated by those words of his ancestors (pitṛ), and desiring a maiden, wandered across the earth."
कन्यामलभमानोऽसौ पितृवाक्याग्निदीपितः ।
चिन्तामवाप महतीमतीवोद्विग्नमानसः ॥२॥

Unable to find a maiden, and ignited by the fire of his father's words, he became exceedingly disturbed in mind and was overcome by immense anxiety.
किं करोमि क्व गच्छामि कथं मे दारसंग्रहः ।
क्षिप्रं भवेत्पितॄणां यो ममाभ्युदयकारकः ॥३॥

3. kiṃ karomi kva gacchāmi kathaṃ me dārasaṃgrahaḥ .
kṣipraṃ bhavetpitṝṇāṃ yo mamābhyudayakārakaḥ.

What should I do? Where should I go? How can I quickly achieve a marriage that will bring prosperity (abhyudaya) to my ancestors?
इति चिन्तयतस्तस्य मतिर्जाता महात्मनः ।
तपसाराधयाम्येनं ब्रह्माणं कमलोद्भवम् ॥४॥

As that great-souled (mahātman) one pondered thus, a thought arose in his mind: 'I shall propitiate the lotus-born Brahmā through severe asceticism (tapas).'
ततो वर्षशतं दिव्यं तपस्तेपे स वेधसम् ।
दिदृक्षुः सुचिरं कालं परं नियममास्थितः ॥५॥

5. tato varṣaśataṃ divyaṃ tapastepe sa vedhasam .

Thereafter, for a hundred divine years, he performed asceticism (tapas), eager to behold Brahmā, having undertaken a supreme discipline (niyama) for a very long time.
ततः स्वं दर्शयामास ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः ।
उवाच तं प्रसन्नोऽस्मीत्युच्यतामभिवाञ्छितम् ॥६॥

6. tataḥ svaṃ darśayāmāsa brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ .

Then Brahmā, the grandfather of the worlds, revealed himself. He said to him, 'I am pleased; tell me what you desire.'
ततोऽसौ प्रणिपत्याह ब्रह्माणं जगतो गतिम् ।
पितॄणां वचनात्तेन यत्कर्तुमभिवाञ्छितम् ॥७॥

7. tato'sau praṇipatyāha brahmāṇaṃ jagato gatim .

Then, having bowed down, he (Dakṣa) spoke to Brahmā, the support of the world, stating what he desired to do according to the words of the ancestors (pitṛs).
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
प्रजापतिस्त्वं भविता स्रष्टव्या भवता प्रजाः ।
सृष्ट्वा प्रजाः सुतान्विप्र समुत्पाद्य क्रियास्तथा ॥८॥
प्रजापतिस्त्वं भविता स्रष्टव्या भवता प्रजाः ।

8. brahmovāca .
prajāpatistvaṃ bhavitā sraṣṭavyā bhavatā prajāḥ .
sṛṣṭvā prajāḥ sutānvipra samutpādya kriyāstathā.

Brahmā said: 'You will be a lord of creatures (prajāpati). Progeny must be created by you. O wise one (vipra), having created progeny and produced sons, and having performed the prescribed rites...'
कृत्वा कृताधिकारस्त्वं ततः सिद्धिमवाप्स्यसि ।
स त्वं यथोक्तं पितृभिः कुरु दारपरिग्रहम् ॥९॥

9. kṛtvā kṛtādhikārastvaṃ tataḥ siddhimavāpsyasi .

After performing your duties (kṛtādhikāra), you will then achieve success (siddhi). Therefore, you should undertake marriage as advised by the ancestors (pitṛs).
कामं चेममभिध्याय क्रियतां पितृपूजनम् ।
त एव तुष्टाः पितरः प्रदास्यन्ति तवेप्सितान् ॥१०॥

10. kāmaṃ cemamabhidhyāya kriyatāṃ pitṛpūjanam .

Desiring this (result), one should meditate and perform ancestral worship (pitṛpūjanam). For those pleased ancestors (pitaraḥ) will indeed grant all your desires.
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
इत्यृषेर्वचनं श्रुत्या ब्रह्मणोऽव्यक्तजन्मनः ।
नद्या विविक्ते पुलिने चकार पितृतर्पणम् ॥११॥

Mārkaṇḍeya said: Having heard these words of the sage (Brahmā), whose birth is unmanifest, he performed the ancestral offering (pitṛtarpaṇam) on a secluded riverbank.
तुष्टाव च पितॄन्विप्रः स्तवैरेभिस्तथादृतः ।
एकाग्रः प्रयतो भूत्वा भक्तिनम्रात्मकन्धरः ॥१२॥

12. tuṣṭāva ca pitṝnvipraḥ stavairebhistathādṛtaḥ .

And the brahmin (vipraḥ), thus honored, praised the ancestors (pitṝn) with these hymns. Having become concentrated (ekāgraḥ) and pure (prayatā), with his own neck bowed in devotion (bhakti).
रुचिरुवाच ।
नमस्येऽहं पितॄञ्छ्राद्धे ये वसन्त्यधिदेवताः ।
देवैरपि हि तर्प्यन्ते ये च श्राद्धे स्वधोत्तरैः ॥१३॥
नमस्येऽहं पितॄञ्छ्राद्धे ये वसन्त्यधिदेवताः ।
देवैरपि हि तर्प्यन्ते ये च श्राद्धे स्वधोत्तरैः ॥१३॥
13. ruciruvāca .
namasye'haṃ pitṝñchrāddhe ye vasantyadhidevatāḥ .
devairapi hi tarpyante ye ca śrāddhe svadhottaraiḥ.

ruciḥ uvāca namasye aham pitṝn śrāddhe ye vasanti adhidevatāḥ
devaiḥ api hi tarpyante ye ca śrāddhe svadhottaraiḥ

Rucī said: I bow to the ancestors (pitṝn) who dwell as presiding deities (adhidevatāḥ) during the śrāddha ceremony. They are indeed gratified even by the gods, and in the śrāddha, they are pleased by oblations accompanied by 'svadhā'.
नमस्येऽहं पितॄन्स्वर्गे ये तर्प्यन्ते महर्षिभिः ।
श्राद्धैर्मनोमयैर्भक्त्या भुक्तिमुक्तिमभीप्सुभिः ॥१४॥

14. namasye'haṃ pitṝnsvarge ye tarpyante maharṣibhiḥ .

14.
I bow to the ancestors (Pitṛs) who reside in heaven and are propitiated by the great sages. These sages, desiring both worldly enjoyment and ultimate liberation (mokṣa), offer them mental śrāddha ceremonies with profound devotion (bhakti).
नमस्येऽहं पितॄन्स्वर्गे सिद्धाः सन्तर्पयन्ति यान् ।
श्राद्धेषु दिव्यैः सकलैरुपहारैरनुत्तमैः ॥१५॥

15. namasye'haṃ pitṝnsvarge siddhāḥ santarpayanti yān .

I bow to the ancestors (Pitṛs) who reside in heaven, whom the perfected beings (Siddhas) propitiate during śrāddha ceremonies with all kinds of excellent divine offerings.
नमस्येऽहं पितॄन्भक्त्या येऽर्च्यन्ते गुह्यकैरपि ।
तन्मयत्वेन वाञ्छद्भिर्ऋद्धिमात्यन्तिकीं पराम् ॥१६॥

16. namasye'haṃ pitṝnbhaktyā ye'rcyante guhyakairapi .

I bow to the ancestors (Pitṛs), who are worshipped with devotion (bhakti) even by the Guhyakas. These Guhyakas, desiring the ultimate supreme prosperity (ṛddhi), do so by identifying themselves with the Pitṛs.
नमस्येऽहं पितॄन्मर्त्यैरर्च्यन्ते भुवि ये सदा ।
श्राद्धेषु श्रद्धयाभीष्टलोकप्राप्तिप्रदायिनः ॥१७॥

17. namasye'haṃ pitṝnmartyairarcyante bhuvi ye sadā .

namasye aham pitṝn martyaiḥ arcyante bhuvi ye sadā

I bow to the ancestors (Pitṛs) who are always worshipped on earth by mortals with faith (śraddhā) during śrāddha ceremonies. These Pitṛs grant the attainment of the desired worlds.
नमस्येऽहं पितॄन्विप्रैरर्च्यन्ते भुवि ये सदा ।
वाञ्छिताभीष्टालाभाय प्राजापत्यप्रदायिनः ॥१८॥

I bow to the ancestors (pitṛ) who are always worshipped on Earth by Brahmins, and who bestow the attainment of desired wishes and the realm of Prajāpati.
नमस्येऽहं पितॄन्ये वै तर्प्यन्तेऽरण्यवासिभिः ।
वन्यैः श्राद्धैर्यताहारैस्तपोनिर्धूतकिल्बिषैः ॥१९॥

19.
I bow to the ancestors (pitṛ) who are indeed satisfied by forest-dwellers through offerings (śrāddha) made with forest produce, by those who practice food restraint, and whose impurities have been cleansed by asceticism (tapas).
नमस्येऽहं पितॄन्विप्रैर्नैष्ठिकव्रतचारिभिः ।
ये संयतात्मभिर्नित्यं सन्तर्प्यन्ते समाधिभिः ॥२०॥

I bow to the ancestors (pitṛ) who are continually propitiated by Brahmins observing the vow of lifelong celibacy (naiṣṭhika-vrata), by those whose selves (ātman) are disciplined, and through states of deep meditative absorption (samādhi).
नमस्येऽहं पितॄञ्छ्राद्धै राजन्यास्तर्पयन्ति यान् ।
कव्यैरशेषैर्विधिवल्लोकत्रयफलप्रदान् ॥२१॥

21. namasye'haṃ pitṝñchrāddhai rājanyāstarpayanti yān .

I bow to the ancestors (pitṛ) whom the Kṣatriyas propitiate with complete ancestral offerings (śrāddha), performed according to sacred injunctions, and who bestow the fruits of the three worlds.
नमस्येऽहं पितॄन्वैश्यैरर्च्यन्ते भुवि ये सदा ।
स्वकर्माभिरतैर्नित्यं पुष्पधूपान्नवारिभिः ॥२२॥

22. namasye'haṃ pitṝnvaiśyairarcyante bhuvi ye sadā .
svakarmābhiratairnityaṃ puṣpadhūpānnavāribhiḥ.

namasye aham pitṝn vaiśyaiḥ arcyante bhuvi ye sadā

I bow down to the ancestors (pitṛ) who are always worshipped on earth by Vaiśyas - those consistently engaged in their own duties (karma) - with offerings of flowers, incense, food, and water.
नमस्येऽहं पितॄञ्छ्राद्धैर्ये शूद्रैरपि भक्तितः ।
सन्तर्प्यन्ते जगत्यत्र नाम्ना ख्याताः सुकालिनः ॥२३॥

23. namasye'haṃ pitṝñchrāddhairye śūdrairapi bhaktitaḥ .

I bow down to the ancestors (pitṛ), especially the renowned Sukālins, who are satisfied in this world (jagat) even by Śūdras through śrāddha offerings performed with devotion (bhakti).
नमस्येऽहं पितॄञ्छ्राद्धैः पाताले या महासुरैः ।
सन्तर्प्यन्ते स्वधाहारास्त्यक्तदम्भमदैः सदा ॥२४॥

24. namasye'haṃ pitṝñchrāddhaiḥ pātāle yā mahāsuraiḥ .
santarpyante svadhāhārāstyaktadambhamadaiḥ sadā.

I bow down to the ancestors (pitṛ) who reside in Pātāla and, having svadhā as their sustenance, are always satisfied by great asuras who have abandoned arrogance and pride, through śrāddha offerings.

I bow to the ancestors (pitṛs) who are always gratified by śrāddha rites and offerings. In that very context, these (rites and offerings) are endowed with proper procedures, sacred mantras, spiritual enjoyment, and prosperity.

I bow to the ancestors (pitṛs) who directly dwell in the divine realm (devaloka) and also in the intermediate space (antarikṣa). And those who reside on earth and are worshipped by gods and others - may they all accept what has been offered by me.

I bow to the ancestors (pitṛs) who are manifestations of the supreme Self (paramātman) and who, indeed, dwell in celestial vehicles (vimānas), having taken form. They are the ones whom the masters of yoga (yogīśvaras) worship with untainted minds, as they are the very causes of liberation (mokṣa) from suffering.

I bow to the ancestors (pitṛs) who, being embodied, are in heaven and partake of svadhā offerings. They are capable of granting all desired things to those who seek results from their actions. They are also the bestowers of liberation (mokṣa) to those who do not seek specific results.
तृप्यन्तु तेऽस्मिन्पितरः समस्ता इच्छावतां ये प्रदिशन्ति कामान् ।

May all those ancestors (pitaraḥ) be satisfied in this (offering), those who grant the desires of those who wish for them: godhood, the status of Indra, or even something greater than that, as well as sons, animals, one's own strength, and homes.
सोमस्य ये रश्मिषु येऽर्कबिम्बे शुक्ले विमाने च सदा वसन्ति ।
तृप्यन्तु तेऽस्मिन्पितरोऽन्नतोयैर्गन्धादिना पुष्टिमितो व्रजन्तु ॥३१॥

May those ancestors who constantly reside in the rays of Soma (the moon), in the sun's orb, and in bright celestial vehicles, be satisfied here with food and water. From this (ritual), may they attain nourishment through scents and other offerings.
येषां हतेऽग्नौ हविषा च तृप्तिर्ये भुञ्जते विप्रशरीरसंस्थाः ।

May those ancestors be satisfied in this (ritual) with food and water - those whose satisfaction (tṛptiḥ) comes through the fire and oblation (haviṣā), who consume (offerings) while residing in the bodies of Brahmins, and who attain joy through the offering of rice balls (piṇḍa-dānena).
ये खड्गिमांसेन सुरैरभीष्टैः कृष्णैस्तिलैर्दिव्यमनोहरैश्च ।

May those (ancestors) who are thoroughly satisfied by rhinoceros meat, by (offerings from) gods, by desired offerings, by black sesame seeds that are divine and charming, by Kāla (the deity of time), by vegetables, and by the foremost of great sages, attain joy here.

And all the offerings, which are greatly desired by those who are worshipped by the immortals, may their presence (sānnidhya) be here among the flowers, fragrances, food, and oblations that I have prepared.
दिने दिने ये प्रतिगृह्णतेऽर्च्चां मासांतपूज्यां भुवि येऽष्टकासु ।
ये वत्सरान्तेऽभ्युदये च पूज्याः प्रयान्तु ते मे पितरोऽत्र तृप्तिम् ॥३५॥

May my ancestors (pitṛ) - those who receive offerings daily, those who are worshipped on earth at the end of the month and during the aṣṭakā rites, and those who are to be revered at the year's end and during times of prosperity - attain satisfaction here.
पूज्या द्विजानां कुमुदेन्दुभासो ये क्षत्रियाणां च नवार्कवर्णाः ।
तथा विशां ये कनकावदाता नीलीनिभाः शूद्रजनस्य ये च ॥३६॥

Those ancestors (pitṛ) who are revered by the Brahmins (dvija) have the radiance of a water lily and the moon. And those of the Kṣatriyas have the color of the newly risen sun. Similarly, those of the Vaiśyas are golden-white, and those of the Śūdra class (śūdra) resemble indigo.
तेऽस्मिन्समस्ता मम पुण्यगन्धधूपान्नतोयादिनिवेदनेन ।
तथाग्निहोमेन च यान्तु तृप्तिं सदा पितृभ्यः प्रणतोऽस्मि तेभ्यः ॥३७॥

May all those ancestors attain satisfaction here through this presentation of auspicious fragrances, incense, food, water, and so forth, made by me, and also through the fire sacrifice (agnihotra). I always bow to those ancestors (pitṛ).
ये देवपूर्वाण्यतितृप्तिहेतोरञ्जन्ति कव्यानि शुभाहुतानि ।

May those divine ancestors, who accept auspiciously offered ancestral oblations for the sake of supreme gratification, and who, when satisfied, bestow prosperity, be pleased here. I offer my salutations to them.

May those (ancestors) who destroy demons, evil spirits, and fierce asuras, thus removing the inauspiciousness for beings, and who are the primeval among the gods, worshipped even by the lords of the immortals, be pleased here. I offer my salutations to them.

May the Agniṣvāttas, Barhiṣads, Ājyapas, and Somapas - these ancestors (pitṛs) who have been satisfied by me - attain contentment in this śrāddha ceremony.

May the groups of Agniṣvātta ancestors protect my eastern direction. And likewise, may the Barhiṣads protect the southern direction, those ancestors (pitṛs) who are remembered (as dwelling there).

रक्षोभूतपिशाचेभ्यस्तथैवासुरदोषतः ॥४२॥

Similarly, may the Ājyapas protect the western direction, and the Somapas the northern direction, from rākṣasas, bhūtas, and piśācas, as well as from the evils of asuras.

विश्वो विश्वभुगाराध्यो धर्मो धन्यः शुभाननः ॥४३॥

Bhūtida, Bhūtikṛt, and Bhūti are the nine groups of Pitṛs. Kalyāṇa, Kalyatākarttā, Kalyas, and Kalyatarāśraya (are also invoked).
कल्यताहेतुरनघः षडिमे ते गणाः स्मृताः ।
वरो वरेण्यो वरदः पुष्टिदस्तुष्टिदस्तथा ॥४५॥

45. kalyatāheturanaghaḥ ṣaḍime te gaṇāḥ smṛtāḥ .

Kalyatāhetu and Anagha, these six groups are remembered. Vara, Vareṇya, Varada, Puṣṭida, and Tuṣṭida (are also to be invoked), and so forth.
विश्वपाता तथा धाता सप्तैवैते तथा गणाः ।
महान्महात्मा महितो महिमावान्महाबलः ॥४६॥

The protector of the universe and the sustainer - these are indeed the seven groups. As well, the Great, the great-souled (ātman), the honored, the glorious, and the greatly powerful ones [are described].
गणाः पञ्च तथैवैते पितॄणां पापनाशनाः ।
सुखदो धनदश्चान्यो धर्मदोऽन्यश्च भूतिदः ॥४७॥

47. gaṇāḥ pañca tathaivaite pitṝṇāṃ pāpanāśanāḥ .

Indeed, these five groups of ancestors (pitṛ) are destroyers of sins. One grants happiness, another grants wealth, another grants natural law (dharma), and another grants prosperity.
पितॄणां कथ्यते चैतत्तथा गणचतुष्टयम् ।
एकत्रिंशत्पितृगणा यैर्व्याप्तमखिलं जगत् ॥४८॥

48. pitṝṇāṃ kathyate caitattathā gaṇacatuṣṭayam .

And these four groups are spoken of in relation to the ancestors (pitṛ). There are thirty-one groups of ancestors (pitṛ) by whom the entire world is pervaded.
