ऋषिरुवाच ।
निहन्यमानं तत्सैन्यमवलोक्य महासुरः ।
सेनानीश्चिक्षुरः कोपाद्ययौ योद्धुमथाम्बिकाम् ॥१॥
1. ṛṣiruvāca .
nihanyamānaṃ tatsainyamavalokya mahāsuraḥ .
senānīścikṣuraḥ kopādyayau yoddhumathāmbikām.
1. ṛṣiḥ uvāca | nihanyamānam tat sainyam avalokya mahāsuraḥ
| senānīḥ cikṣuraḥ kopāt yayau yoddhum atha ambikām
1. The sage said: Seeing his army being slaughtered, the great demon, commander Cikṣura, then angrily went to fight Ambikā.
स देवीं शरवर्षेण ववर्ष समरेऽसुरः ।
यथा मेरुगिरेः शृङ्गं तोयवर्षेण तोयदः ॥२॥
2. sa devīṃ śaravarṣeṇa vavarṣa samare'suraḥ .
yathā merugireḥ śṛṅgaṃ toyavarṣeṇa toyadaḥ.
2. saḥ devīm śaravarṣeṇa vavarṣa samare asuraḥ
| yathā merugireḥ śṛṅgam toyavarṣeṇa toyadaḥ
2. In battle, that demon showered the Goddess with a volley of arrows, just as a cloud showers the peak of Mount Meru with a torrent of water.
तस्य च्छित्त्वा ततो देवी लीलयैव शरोत्करान् ।
जघान तुरगान् बाणैर्यन्तारं चैव वाजिनाम् ॥३॥
3. tasya cchittvā tato devī līlayaiva śarotkarān .
jaghāna turagān bāṇairyantāraṃ caiva vājinām.

| jaghāna turagān bāṇaiḥ yantāram ca eva vājinām
3. Then the Goddess, playfully and with ease, severed his volley of arrows. With her own arrows, she killed the horses and also the charioteer of those steeds.
चिच्छेद च धनुः सद्यो ध्वजं चातिसमुच्छ्रितम् ।
विव्याध चैव गात्रेषु च्छिन्नधन्वानमाशुगैः ॥४॥
4. ciccheda ca dhanuḥ sadyo dhvajaṃ cātisamucchritam .
vivyādha caiva gātreṣu cchinnadhanvānamāśugaiḥ.
4. ciccheda ca dhanuḥ sadyaḥ dhvajam ca atisamucchritam
| vivyādha ca eva gātreṣu chinnadhanvānam āśugaiḥ
4. And immediately she cut his bow and his very lofty banner. Then, with swift arrows, she pierced the demon whose bow had been severed in his limbs.
स च्छिन्नधन्वा विरथो हताश्वो हतसारथिः ।
अभ्यधावत तां देवीं खड्ग-चर्मधरोऽसुरः ॥५॥
5. sa cchinnadhanvā viratho hatāśvo hatasārathiḥ .
abhyadhāvata tāṃ devīṃ khaḍga-carmadharo'suraḥ.
5. saḥ chinna-dhanvā virathaḥ hata-aśvaḥ hata-sārathiḥ
abhi adhāvat tām devīm khaḍga-carma-dharaḥ asuraḥ
5. With his bow cut, his chariot destroyed, his horses slain, and his charioteer killed, that demon, holding a sword and shield, rushed towards the goddess.
सिंहमाहत्य खड्गेन तीक्ष्णधारेण मूर्धनि ।
आजघान भुजे सव्ये देवीमप्यतिवेगवान् ॥६॥
6. siṃhamāhatya khaḍgena tīkṣṇadhāreṇa mūrdhani .
ājaghāna bhuje savye devīmapyativegavān.
6. siṃham āhatya khaḍgena tīkṣṇa-dhāreṇa mūrdhani
ajaghāna bhuje savye devīm api ati-vegavān
6. Having struck the lion on the head with his sharp-edged sword, the extremely powerful demon also struck the goddess on her left arm.
तस्याः खड्गो भुजं प्राप्य पफाल नृपनन्दन ।
ततो जग्राह शूलं स कोपादरुणलोचनः ॥७॥
7. tasyāḥ khaḍgo bhujaṃ prāpya paphāla nṛpanandana .
tato jagrāha śūlaṃ sa kopādaruṇalocanaḥ.
7. tasyāḥ khaḍgaḥ bhujam prāpya paphāla nṛpa-nandana
tataḥ jagrāha śūlam saḥ kopāt aruṇa-locanaḥ
7. O son of a king, his sword shattered upon striking her arm. Then, with eyes reddened from rage, he seized a spear.
चिक्षेप च ततस्तत्तु भद्रकाल्यां महासुरः ।
जाज्वल्यमानं तेजोभी रविबिम्बमिवाम्बरात् ॥८॥
8. cikṣepa ca tatastattu bhadrakālyāṃ mahāsuraḥ .
jājvalyamānaṃ tejobhī ravibimbamivāmbarāt.
8. cikṣepa ca tataḥ tat tu bhadra-kālyām mahā-asuraḥ
jā-jvalyamānam tejobhiḥ ravi-bimbam iva ambarāt
8. And then, the great demon hurled that (spear) at Bhadrakālī, shining intensely with its brilliance, like the sun's orb (ravi-bimba) falling from the sky.
दृष्ट्वा तदापतच्छूलं देवी शूलममुञ्चत ।
तच्छूलं शतधा तेन नीतं स च महासुरः ॥९॥
9. dṛṣṭvā tadāpatacchūlaṃ devī śūlamamuñcata .
tacchūlaṃ śatadhā tena nītaṃ sa ca mahāsuraḥ.
9. dṛṣṭvā tat āpatat śūlam devī śūlam amuñcata
tat śūlam śatadhā tena nītam saḥ ca mahāsuraḥ
9. Having seen that approaching spear, the Goddess released her own spear. That spear (of the Goddess) was shattered into a hundred pieces by him, and that great demon...
हते तस्मिन् महावीर्ये महिषस्य चमूपतौ ।
आजगाम गजारूढश्चामरस्त्रिदशार्दनः ॥१०॥
10. hate tasmin mahāvīrye mahiṣasya camūpatau .
ājagāma gajārūḍhaścāmarastridaśārdanaḥ.

ājagāma gajārūḍhaḥ cāmaraḥ tridaśārdanaḥ
10. When that mighty general of Mahiṣa was slain, Cāmara, the tormentor of the gods, came, mounted on an elephant.
सोऽपि शक्तिं मुमोचाथ देव्यास्तामम्बिका द्रुतम् ।
हुङ्काराभिहतां भूमौ पातयामास निष्प्रभाम् ॥११॥
11. so'pi śaktiṃ mumocātha devyāstāmambikā drutam .
huṅkārābhihatāṃ bhūmau pātayāmāsa niṣprabhām.
11. saḥ api śaktim mumoca atha devyāḥ tām ambikā drutam
huṅkārābhihatām bhūmau pātayāmāsa niṣprabhām
11. Then he (Cāmara) also released a spear (śakti), but Ambikā (the Goddess) quickly made that (śakti) fall to the ground, struck down by her roar (huṅkāra), rendering it powerless.
भग्नां शक्तिं निपतितां दृष्ट्वा क्रोधसमन्वितः ।
चिक्षेप चामरः शूलं बाणैस्तदपि साच्छिनत् ॥१२॥
12. bhagnāṃ śaktiṃ nipatitāṃ dṛṣṭvā krodhasamanvitaḥ .
cikṣepa cāmaraḥ śūlaṃ bāṇaistadapi sācchinat.
12. bhagnām śaktim nipatitām dṛṣṭvā krodhasamanvitaḥ
cikṣepa cāmaraḥ śūlam bāṇaiḥ tat api sā acchinat
12. Having seen his spear (śakti) broken and fallen, Cāmara, filled with rage, hurled another spear. But she (the Goddess) also cut that (spear) with her arrows.
ततः सिंहः समुत्पत्य गजकुम्भान्तरे स्थितः ।
बाहुयुद्धेन युयुधे तेनोच्चैस्त्रिदशारिणा ॥१३॥
13. tataḥ siṃhaḥ samutpatya gajakumbhāntare sthitaḥ .
bāhuyuddhena yuyudhe tenoccaistridaśāriṇā.
13. tataḥ siṃhaḥ samutpatya gajakumbhāntare sthitaḥ
bāhuyuddhena yuyudhe tena uccaiḥ tridaśāriṇā
13. Then, the lion, having sprung up and positioned himself on the elephant's forehead, fought fiercely in arm-to-arm combat with that enemy of the gods.
युधायमानो ततस्तौ तु तस्मान्नागान्महीं गतौ ।
युयुधातेऽतिसंरब्धौ प्रहारैरतिदारुणैः ॥१४॥
14. yudhāyamāno tatastau tu tasmānnāgānmahīṃ gatau .
yuyudhāte'tisaṃrabdhau prahārairatidāruṇaiḥ.
14. yudhāyamānau tataḥ tau tu tasmāt nāgāt mahīm gatau
yuyudhāte ati saṃrabdhau prahāraiḥ ati dāruṇaiḥ
14. Then, while fighting, those two descended from the elephant to the ground. Extremely enraged, they fought with exceedingly dreadful blows.
ततो वेगात्खमुत्पत्य निपत्य च मृगारिणा ।
करप्रहारेण शिरश्चामरस्य पृथक्कृतम् ॥१५॥
15. tato vegātkhamutpatya nipatya ca mṛgāriṇā .
karaprahāreṇa śiraścāmarasya pṛthakkṛtam.
15. tataḥ vegāt kham utpatya nipatya ca mṛgāriṇā
karaprahāreṇa śiraḥ cāmarasya pṛthak kṛtam
15. Then, after leaping up into the sky with great force and descending, the lion (mṛgāri) severed Cāmara's head with a strike of its paw.
उदग्रश्च रणे देव्या शिलावृक्षादिभिर्हतः ।
दन्तमुष्टितलैश्चैव करालश्च निपातितः ॥१६॥
16. udagraśca raṇe devyā śilāvṛkṣādibhirhataḥ .
dantamuṣṭitalaiścaiva karālaśca nipātitaḥ.
16. udagraḥ ca raṇe devyā śilāvṛkṣādibhiḥ hataḥ
dantamuṣṭitalaiḥ ca eva karālaḥ ca nipātitaḥ
16. And Udagra was slain in battle by the Goddess with rocks, trees, and other such things. Furthermore, Karāla was struck down by (her) teeth, fists, and the soles of her feet.
देवी क्रुद्धा गदापातैश्चूर्णयामास चोद्धतम् ।
वाष्कलं भिन्दिपालेन बाणैस्ताम्रं तथान्धकम् ॥१७॥
17. devī kruddhā gadāpātaiścūrṇayāmāsa coddhatam .
vāṣkalaṃ bhindipālena bāṇaistāmraṃ tathāndhakam.
17. devī kruddhā gadāpātaiḥ cūrṇayāmāsa ca uddhatam |
vāṣkalam bhindipālena bāṇaiḥ tāmram tathā andhakam
17. The enraged Goddess crushed Uddhata with blows from her mace. She struck Vāṣkala with a bhindipāla, and Tāmra as well as Andhaka with arrows.
उग्रास्यमुग्रवीर्यञ्च तथैव च महाहनुम् ।
त्रिनेत्रा च त्रिशूलेन जघान परमेश्वरी ॥१८॥
18. ugrāsyamugravīryañca tathaiva ca mahāhanum .
trinetrā ca triśūlena jaghāna parameśvarī.
18. ugrāsyam ugravīryam ca tathā eva ca mahāhanum
| trinetrā ca triśūlena jaghāna parameśvarī
18. And the supreme Goddess (parameśvarī), who has three eyes, killed Ugrāsya, Ugravīrya, and Mahāhanu with her trident.
बिडालस्यासिना कायात् पातयामास वै शिरः ।
दुर्धरं दुर्मुखं चोभौ शरैर्निन्ये यमक्षयम् ।
कालं च कालदण्डेन कालरात्रिरपातयत् ॥१९॥
19. biḍālasyāsinā kāyāt pātayāmāsa vai śiraḥ .
durdharaṃ durmukhaṃ cobhau śarairninye yamakṣayam .
kālaṃ ca kāladaṇḍena kālarātrirapātayat.
19. biḍālasya asinā kāyāt pātayāmāsa
vai śiraḥ | durdharam durmukham ca
ubhau śaraiḥ ninye yamakṣayam |
kālam ca kāladaṇḍena kālarātrī apātayat
19. With her sword, she indeed severed Biḍāla's head from his body. She sent both Durdhara and Durmukha to the abode of Yama (yamakṣayam) with arrows. And Kālarātri struck down Kāla with the rod of death (kāladaṇḍa).
अग्रदर्शनमत्युग्रैः खड्गपातैरताडयत् ।
असिनैवासिलोमानमच्छिदत् सा रणोत्सवे ।
गणैः सिंहेन देव्या च जयक्ष्वेडाकृतोत्सवैः ॥२०॥
20. agradarśanamatyugraiḥ khaḍgapātairatāḍayat .
asinaivāsilomānamacchidat sā raṇotsave .
gaṇaiḥ siṃhena devyā ca jayakṣveḍākṛtotsavaiḥ.
20. agradarśanam ati ugraiḥ khaḍgapātaiḥ
atāḍayat | asinā eva asilomānam
acchidat sā raṇotsave | gaṇaiḥ
siṃhena devyā ca jayakṣveḍākṛtotsavaiḥ
20. She struck Agradarśana with exceedingly fierce sword-blows. In the joyous battle, she also severed Asiloman with her sword. These acts were performed by the Goddess, her lion, and her attendants (gaṇas), who were celebrating with triumphant roars.
एवं संक्षीयमाणे तु स्वसैन्ये महिषासुरः ।
माहिषेण स्वरूपेण त्रासयामास तान् गणान् ॥२१॥
21. evaṃ saṃkṣīyamāṇe tu svasainye mahiṣāsuraḥ .
māhiṣeṇa svarūpeṇa trāsayāmāsa tān gaṇān.
21. evaṃ saṃkṣīyamāṇe tu svasainye mahiṣāsuraḥ
māhiṣeṇa svarūpeṇa trāsayāmāsa tān gaṇān
21. In this way, as his own army was being destroyed, the demon Mahiṣa (Mahiṣāsura), assuming his buffalo form, began to terrorize those hosts (gaṇa).
कांश्चित्तुण्डप्रिहारेण खुरक्षेपैस्तथापरान् ।
लाङ्गूलताडितांश्चान्यान् शृङ्गाभ्याञ्च विदारितान् ॥२२॥
22. kāṃścittuṇḍaprihāreṇa khurakṣepaistathāparān .
lāṅgūlatāḍitāṃścānyān śṛṅgābhyāñca vidāritān.
22. kāṃścit tuṇḍaprahāreṇa khurakṣepaiḥ tathā aparān
lāṅgūlataḍitān ca anyān śṛṅgābhyām ca vidāritān
22. He (Mahiṣāsura) attacked some (of the hosts) with blows of his snout, and similarly others with kicks of his hooves. Still others were struck by his tail, and others were torn apart by his two horns.
वेगेन कांश्चिदपरान् नादेन भ्रमणेन च ।
निश्वासपवनेनान्यान् पातयामास भूतले ॥२३॥
23. vegena kāṃścidaparān nādena bhramaṇena ca .
niśvāsapavanenānyān pātayāmāsa bhūtale.
23. vegena kāṃścit aparān nādena bhramaṇena ca
niśvāsapavanena anyān pātayāmāsa bhūtale
23. With speed, he knocked down some, and still others with his roar and by whirling. By the wind of his breath, he threw others down onto the ground.
निपात्य प्रमथानीकमभ्यधावत सोऽसुरः ।
सिंहं हन्तुं महादेव्याः कोपं चक्रे ततोऽम्बिका ॥२४॥
24. nipātya pramathānīkamabhyadhāvata so'suraḥ .
siṃhaṃ hantuṃ mahādevyāḥ kopaṃ cakre tato'mbikā.
24. nipātya pramathānīkam abhyadhāvata saḥ asuraḥ
siṃham hantum mahādevyāḥ kopam cakre tataḥ ambikā
24. Having overthrown the host of Pramathas, that demon (Mahiṣāsura) rushed towards the lion to kill it. Then, Ambikā became enraged on behalf of the Great Goddess.
सोऽपि कोपान्महावीर्यः खुरक्षुण्णमहीतलः ।
शृङ्गाभ्यां पर्वतानुच्चैश्चिक्षेप च ननाद च ॥२५॥
25. so'pi kopānmahāvīryaḥ khurakṣuṇṇamahītalaḥ .
śṛṅgābhyāṃ parvatānuccaiścikṣepa ca nanāda ca.
25. saḥ api kopāt mahāvīryaḥ khurakṣuṇṇamahītalaḥ
śṛṅgābhyām parvatān uccaiḥ cikṣepa ca nanāda ca
25. That exceedingly powerful one, enraged, with the surface of the earth already torn up by his hooves, threw mountains high into the air with his two horns and roared.
वेगभ्रमणविक्षुण्णा मही तस्य व्यशीर्यत ।
लाङ्गूलेनाहतश्चाब्धिः प्लावयामास सर्वतः ॥२६॥
26. vegabhramaṇavikṣuṇṇā mahī tasya vyaśīryata .
lāṅgūlenāhataścābdhiḥ plāvayāmāsa sarvataḥ.
26. vegabhramaṇavikṣuṇṇā mahī tasya vyaśīryata
lāṅgūlena āhataḥ ca abdhiḥ plāvayāmāsa sarvataḥ
26. The earth, intensely agitated and pulverized by his rapid movements, was shattered by him. And the ocean, struck by his tail, flooded everywhere.
धुतशृङ्गविभिन्नाश्च खण्डं खण्डं ययुर्घना ।
श्वासानिलास्ताः शतशो निपेतुर्नभसोऽचलाः ॥२७॥
27. dhutaśṛṅgavibhinnāśca khaṇḍaṃ khaṇḍaṃ yayurghanā .
śvāsānilāstāḥ śataśo nipeturnabhaso'calāḥ.
27. dhutaśṛṅgavibhinnāḥ ca khaṇḍam khaṇḍam yayuḥ ghanāḥ
śvāsānilāḥ tāḥ śataśaḥ nipetuḥ nabhasaḥ acalāḥ
27. And the clouds, shattered by his shaking horns, broke into countless pieces. His breath-winds fell by hundreds, and those mountains also fell from the sky.
इति क्रोधसमाध्मातमापतान्तं महासुरम् ।
दृष्ट्वा सा चण्डिका कोपं तद्वधाय तदाकरोत् ॥२८॥
28. iti krodhasamādhmātamāpatāntaṃ mahāsuram .
dṛṣṭvā sā caṇḍikā kopaṃ tadvadhāya tadākarot.
28. iti krodhasamādhmātam āpatāntam mahāsuram
dṛṣṭvā sā caṇḍikā kopam tadvadhāya tadā akarot
28. Having seen that great demon, thus swollen with rage and charging towards her, Chandika then became enraged, intending to slay him.
सा क्षिप्त्वा तस्य वै पाशं तं बबन्ध महासुरम् ।
तत्याज माहिषं रूपं सोऽपि बद्धो महामृधे ॥२९॥
29. sā kṣiptvā tasya vai pāśaṃ taṃ babandha mahāsuram .
tatyāja māhiṣaṃ rūpaṃ so'pi baddho mahāmṛdhe.
29. sā kṣiptvā tasya vai pāśam tam babandha mahāsuram
tatyāja māhiṣam rūpam saḥ api baddhaḥ mahāmṛdhe
29. She threw his noose and bound that great demon. Even while bound in the great battle, he abandoned his buffalo form.
ततः सिंहोऽभवत् सद्यो यावत्तस्याम्बिका शिरः ।
छिनत्ति तावत्पुरुषः खड्गपाणिरदृश्यत ॥३०॥
30. tataḥ siṃho'bhavat sadyo yāvattasyāmbikā śiraḥ .
chinatti tāvatpuruṣaḥ khaḍgapāṇiradṛśyata.
30. tataḥ siṃhaḥ abhavat sadyaḥ yāvat tasyāḥ ambikā
śiraḥ chinatti tāvat puruṣaḥ khaḍgapāṇiḥ adṛśyata
30. Then, he immediately transformed into a lion. But just as Ambika was severing its head, a man (puruṣa) wielding a sword appeared.
तत एवाशु पुरुषं देवी चिच्छेद सायकैः ।
तं खड्गचर्मणा सार्धं ततः सोऽभून्महागजः ॥३१॥
31. tata evāśu puruṣaṃ devī ciccheda sāyakaiḥ .
taṃ khaḍgacarmaṇā sārdhaṃ tataḥ so'bhūnmahāgajaḥ.
31. tataḥ eva āśu puruṣam devī ciccheda sāyakaiḥ tam
khaḍgacarmaṇā sārdham tataḥ saḥ abhūt mahāgajaḥ
31. Then, the Goddess swiftly severed that man (puruṣa) with arrows, along with his sword and shield. Thereupon, he transformed into a great elephant.
करेण च महासिंहं तं चकर्ष जगर्ज च ।
कर्षतस्तु करं देवी खड्गेन निरकृन्तत ॥३२॥
32. kareṇa ca mahāsiṃhaṃ taṃ cakarṣa jagarja ca .
karṣatastu karaṃ devī khaḍgena nirakṛntata.
32. kareṇa ca mahāsiṃham tam cakarṣa jagarja ca
karṣataḥ tu karam devī khaḍgena nirakṛntata
32. And with his trunk, that great elephant dragged the great lion and roared. But the Goddess, with her sword, cut off the trunk of the one who was dragging.
ततो महासुरो भूयो माहिषं वपुरास्थितः ।
तथैव क्षोभयामास त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम् ॥३३॥
33. tato mahāsuro bhūyo māhiṣaṃ vapurāsthitaḥ .
tathaiva kṣobhayāmāsa trailokyaṃ sacarācaram.
33. tataḥ mahāsuraḥ bhūyaḥ māhiṣam vapuḥ āsthitaḥ
tathā eva kṣobhayāmāsa trailokyam sacarācaram
33. Then the great demon, having once more taken on his buffalo form, similarly agitated all three worlds, including their moving and unmoving beings.
ततः क्रुद्धा जगन्माता चण्डिका पानमुत्तमम् ।
पपौ पुनः पुनश्चैव जहासारुणलोचना ॥३४॥
34. tataḥ kruddhā jaganmātā caṇḍikā pānamuttamam .
papau punaḥ punaścaiva jahāsāruṇalocanā.
34. tataḥ kruddhā jagat-mātṛ caṇḍikā pānam uttamam
papau punaḥ punaḥ ca eva jahāsa aruṇa-locanā
34. Then, the enraged mother of the world, Chaṇḍikā, repeatedly drank a superior drink and laughed, her eyes red.
ननर्द चासुरः सोऽपि बलवीर्यमदोद्धतः ।
विषाणाब्याञ्च चिक्षेप चण्डिकां प्रति भूधरान् ॥३५॥
35. nanarda cāsuraḥ so'pi balavīryamadoddhataḥ .
viṣāṇābyāñca cikṣepa caṇḍikāṃ prati bhūdharān.
35. nanarda ca asuraḥ saḥ api bala-vīrya-mada-uddhataḥ
viṣāṇābhyām ca cikṣepa caṇḍikām prati bhūdharān
35. And that demon, swollen with pride from his strength and valor, also roared. Then, with his two horns, he hurled mountains at Chaṇḍikā.
सा च तान् प्रहितांस्तेन चूर्णयन्ती शरोत्करैः ।
उवाच तं मदोद्धूतमुखरागाकुलाक्षरम् ॥३६॥
36. sā ca tān prahitāṃstena cūrṇayantī śarotkaraiḥ .
uvāca taṃ madoddhūtamukharāgākulākṣaram.
36. sā ca tān prahitān tena cūrṇayantī śara-utkaraiḥ
uvāca tam mada-uddhūta-mukha-rāga-ākula-akṣaram
36. And she, crushing those mountains hurled by him with volleys of arrows, spoke to him with words whose syllables were agitated by the flush of her face, which was swollen with rage.
देव्युवाच ।
गर्ज गर्ज क्षणं मूढ मधु यावत्पिबाम्यहम् ।
मया त्वयि हतेऽत्रैव गर्जिष्यन्त्याशु देवताः ॥३७॥
37. devyuvāca .
garja garja kṣaṇaṃ mūḍha madhu yāvatpibāmyaham .
mayā tvayi hate'traiva garjiṣyantyāśu devatāḥ.
37. devī uvāca garja garja kṣaṇam mūḍha madhu yāvat pibāmi
aham mayā tvayi hate atra eva garjiṣyanti āśu devatāḥ
37. The Goddess said: "Roar, roar for a moment, oh foolish one, while I drink this wine. When you are killed by me right here, the gods will quickly roar in triumph."
ऋषिरुवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा समुत्पत्य सारूढा तं महासुरम् ।
पादेनाक्रम्य कण्ठे च शूलेनैनमताडयत् ॥३८॥
38. ṛṣiruvāca .
evamuktvā samutpatya sārūḍhā taṃ mahāsuram .
pādenākramya kaṇṭhe ca śūlenainamatāḍayat.
38. ṛṣiḥ uvāca evam uktvā samutpatya sā ārūḍhā tam
mahāsuram pādena ākramya kaṇṭhe ca śūlena enam atāḍayat
38. The Sage said: "Having spoken thus, she leaped up and mounted that great demon. Pressing her foot on his neck, she struck him with her spear."
ततः सोऽपि पदाक्रान्तस्तया निजमुखात्ततः ।
अर्धनिष्क्रान्त एवासीद् देव्या वीर्येण संवृतः ॥३९॥
39. tataḥ so'pi padākrāntastayā nijamukhāttataḥ .
ardhaniṣkrānta evāsīd devyā vīryeṇa saṃvṛtaḥ.
39. tataḥ saḥ api padākrāntaḥ tayā nijamukhāt tataḥ
ardhaniṣkrāntaḥ eva āsīt devyā vīryeṇa saṃvṛtaḥ
39. Then, trodden upon by her foot, he was indeed only half-emerged from his own mouth, constrained by the Goddess's power (śakti).
अर्धनिष्क्रान्त एवासौ युध्यमानो महासुरः ।
तया महासिना देव्या शिरश्छित्त्वा निपातितः ॥४०॥
40. ardhaniṣkrānta evāsau yudhyamāno mahāsuraḥ .
tayā mahāsinā devyā śiraśchittvā nipātitaḥ.
40. ardhaniṣkrāntaḥ eva asau yudhyamānaḥ mahāsuraḥ
tayā mahāsinā devyā śiras chittvā nipātitaḥ
40. That great demon, while still half-emerged and fighting, was struck down by the Goddess, who, with her great sword, severed his head.
एवं स महिषो नाम ससैन्यः ससुहृद्गणः ।
त्रैलोक्यं मोहयित्वा तु तया देव्या विनाशितः ॥४१॥
41. evaṃ sa mahiṣo nāma sasainyaḥ sasuhṛdgaṇaḥ .
trailokyaṃ mohayitvā tu tayā devyā vināśitaḥ.
41. evam saḥ mahiṣaḥ nāma sasainyaḥ sasuhṛdgaṇaḥ
trailokyam mohayitvā tu tayā devyā vināśitaḥ
41. In this way, that very Mahiṣa, along with his army and retinue of friends, after deluding the three worlds, was destroyed by that Goddess.
त्रैलोक्यस्थैस्तदा भूतैर्महिषे विनिपातिते ।
जयेत्युक्तं ततः सर्वैः सदेवासुरमानवैः ॥४२॥
42. trailokyasthaistadā bhūtairmahiṣe vinipātite .
jayetyuktaṃ tataḥ sarvaiḥ sadevāsuramānavaiḥ.
42. trailokyastaiḥ tadā bhūtaiḥ mahiṣe vinipātite
jaya iti uktam tataḥ sarvaiḥ sadevāsuramānavaiḥ
42. When Mahiṣa was slain, then 'Victory!' was proclaimed by all the beings dwelling in the three worlds, including gods, asuras, and humans.
ततो हाहाकृतं सर्वं दैत्यसैन्यं ननाश तत् ।
प्रहर्षञ्च परं जग्मुः सकला देवतागणाः ॥४३॥
43. tato hāhākṛtaṃ sarvaṃ daityasainyaṃ nanāśa tat .
praharṣañca paraṃ jagmuḥ sakalā devatāgaṇāḥ.
43. tataḥ hāhākṛtam sarvam daityasainyam nanāśa tat
praharṣam ca param jagmuḥ sakalāḥ devatāgaṇāḥ
43. Then, that entire army of demons, crying 'Hāhā!', perished. And all the groups of deities attained supreme joy.
तुष्टुवुस्तां सुरा देवीं सह दिव्यैर्महर्षिभिः ।
जगुर्गन्धर्वपतयो ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः ॥४४॥
44. tuṣṭuvustāṃ surā devīṃ saha divyairmaharṣibhiḥ .
jagurgandharvapatayo nanṛtuścāpsarogaṇāḥ.
44. tuṣṭuvuḥ tām surāḥ devīm saha divyaiḥ maharṣibhiḥ
jaguḥ gandharvapatayaḥ nanṛtuḥ ca apsarogaṇāḥ
44. The gods, accompanied by the divine great sages, praised that Goddess. The lords of the gandharvas sang, and the groups of apsaras danced.
