ऋषिरुवाच ।
देवासुरमभूद् युद्धं पूर्णमब्दशतं पुरा ।
महिषेऽसुराणामधिपे देवानां च पुरन्दरे ॥१॥

1. ṛṣiruvāca .
devāsuramabhūd yuddhaṃ pūrṇamabdaśataṃ purā .

ṛṣiḥ uvāca deva-asuram abhūt yuddham pūrṇam abda-śatam

The sage said: Formerly, a great battle took place between the gods and asuras, lasting a full hundred years. This occurred when Mahiṣa was the lord of the asuras, and Purandara (Indra) was the chief of the gods.
तत्रासुरैर्महावीर्यैर्देवसैन्यं पराजितम् ।
जित्वा च सकलान् देवानिन्द्रोऽभून्महिषासुरः ॥२॥

In that battle, the army of the gods was defeated by the greatly valorous asuras. And after conquering all the gods, Mahiṣāsura himself became Indra.
ततः पराजिता देवाः पद्मयोनिं प्रजापतिम् ।
पुरस्कृत्य गतास्तत्र यत्रेश-गरुडध्वजौ ॥३॥

Then, the defeated gods, making the lotus-born Prajāpati (Brahmā) their leader, went to the place where Īśa (Shiva) and Garuḍadhvaja (Viṣṇu) were.
यथावृत्तं तयोस्तद्वन्महिषासुरचेष्टितम् ।
त्रिदशाः कथयामासुर्देवाभिभवविस्तरम् ॥४॥

In that manner, the gods (tridaśāḥ) narrated to them the full account of Mahiṣāsura's actions and the extensive details of the gods' defeat.
सूर्येन्द्रग्न्यनिलेन्दूनां यमस्य वरुणस्य च ।
अन्येषां चाधिकारान् स स्वयमेवाधितिष्ठिति ॥५॥

5. sūryendragnyanilendūnāṃ yamasya varuṇasya ca .

He (Mahiṣāsura) himself occupies the jurisdictions of Sūrya, Indra, Agni, Anila, Indu, Yama, Varuṇa, and others.
स्वर्गान्निराकृताः सर्वे तेन देवगणा भुवि ।
विचरन्ति यथा मर्त्या महिषेण दुरात्मना ॥६॥

6. svargānnirākṛtāḥ sarve tena devagaṇā bhuvi .

All the hosts of gods, driven out of heaven by that evil-souled Mahiṣa (Mahiṣāsura), roam the earth like mortals.
एतद्वः कथितं सर्वममरारिविचेष्टितम् ।
शरणं वः प्रपन्नाः स्मो वधस्तस्य विचिन्त्यताम् ॥७॥

We have recounted to you all the activities of the demon, the enemy of the gods. Having sought refuge in you, we request that his destruction be contemplated.
ऋषिरुवाच ।
इत्थं निशम्य देवानां वचांसि मधुसूदनः ।
चकार कोपं शम्भुश्च भ्रुकुटीकुटिलाननौ ॥८॥

The sage said: Thus, upon hearing the words of the gods, Madhusūdana (Vishnu) became angry, and Śambhu (Shiva) also grew wrathful, their faces contorted with furious frowns.
ततोऽतिकोपपूर्णस्य चक्रिणो वदनात्ततः ।
निश्चक्राम महत्तेजो ब्रह्मणः शङ्करस्य च ॥९॥

9. tato'tikopapūrṇasya cakriṇo vadanāttataḥ .

Then, from the face of the discus-bearer (Vishnu), who was filled with intense anger, a great effulgence emerged. And similarly, [great effulgence emerged] from Brahmā and Śaṅkara (Shiva).
अन्येषाञ्चैव देवानां शक्रादीनां शरीरतः ।
निर्गतं सुमहत्तेजस्तच्चैक्यं समगच्छत ॥१०॥

And from the bodies of other gods as well, headed by Indra, a very great effulgence emerged. All that effulgence then attained a single unity.
अतीव तेजसः कूटं ज्वलन्तमिव पर्वतम् ।
ददृशुस्ते सुरास्तत्र ज्वालाव्याप्तदिगन्तरम् ॥११॥

The gods saw there a huge mass of splendor, like a blazing mountain, whose flames pervaded all directions.
अतुलं तत्र तत्तेजः सर्वदेवशरीरजम् ।
एकस्थं तदभून्नारी व्याप्तलोकत्रयं त्विषा ॥१२॥

12. atulaṃ tatra tattejaḥ sarvadevaśarīrajam .
ekasthaṃ tadabhūnnārī vyāptalokatrayaṃ tviṣā.

That unparalleled splendor, which originated from the bodies of all the gods, became unified there. It then transformed into a woman, whose radiance pervaded the three worlds.
यदभूच्छाम्भवं तेजस्तेनाजायत तन्मुखम् ।
याम्येन चाभवन् केशा बहवो विष्णुतेजसा ॥१३॥

13. yadabhūcchāmbhavaṃ tejastenājāyata tanmukham .

Her face was formed from Shiva's (śāmbhava) splendor (tejas). Her numerous hairs came into being from Yama's (yāmya) essence and Vishnu's splendor (tejas).
सौम्येन स्तनयोर्युग्मं मध्यं चैन्द्रेण चाभवत् ।
वारुणेन च जङ्घोरू नितम्बस्तेजसा भुवः ॥१४॥

14. saumyena stanayoryugmaṃ madhyaṃ caindreṇa cābhavat .

The pair of breasts was formed from Soma's (saumya) essence, and her middle part from Indra's (aindreṇa). Her calves and thighs (jaṅghorū) came into being from Varuna's (vāruṇena) essence, and her hips (nitamba) from the Earth's (bhuv) splendor (tejas).
ब्रह्मणस्तेजसा पादौ तदङ्गुल्योऽर्कतेजसा ।
वसूनाञ्च कराङ्गुल्यः कौबेरेण च नासिका ॥१५॥

15. brahmaṇastejasā pādau tadaṅgulyo'rkatejasā .

Her feet were formed by the splendor of Brahmā, and her toes by the splendor of the sun. Her fingers were formed by the Vasus' splendor, and her nose by that of Kubera.
तस्यास्तु दन्ताः सम्भूताः प्राजापत्येन तेजसा ।
नयनत्रितयं जज्ञे तथा पावकतेजसा ॥१६॥

16. tasyāstu dantāḥ sambhūtāḥ prājāpatyena tejasā .

Her teeth, furthermore, were produced by the splendor of Prajāpati. Likewise, her three eyes appeared from the splendor of fire.
भ्रुवौ च सन्ध्ययोस्तेजः श्रवणावनिलस्य च ।
अन्येषां चैव देवानां सम्भवस्तेजसां शिवा ॥१७॥

Her two eyebrows were the splendor of the two twilight periods (sandhyā), and her two ears were the splendor of the wind god, Anila. O Śivā, the collection of splendors from all other gods (deva) also contributed to her form.
ततः समस्तदेवानां तेजोराशिसमुद्भवाम् ।
तां विलोक्य मुदं प्रापुरमरा महिषार्दिताः ॥१८॥

18. tataḥ samastadevānāṃ tejorāśisamudbhavām .
tāṃ vilokya mudaṃ prāpuramarā mahiṣārditāḥ.

Then, beholding her, who had originated from the accumulated splendors of all the gods (deva), the immortal ones (amara), distressed by Mahiṣa, attained great joy.
ततो देवा ददुस्तस्यै स्वानि स्वान्यायुधानि च ।
ऊचुर्जयजयेत्युच्चैर्जयन्तीं ते जयैषिणः ॥१९॥

19. tato devā dadustasyai svāni svānyāyudhāni ca .

Then, the gods, eager for victory, gave her each of their own weapons and loudly declared, "Victory, victory!" to the victorious one.
शूलं शूलाद्विनिष्कृष्य ददौ तस्यै पिनाकधृक् ।
चक्रं च दत्तवान् कृष्णः समुत्पाद्य स्वचक्रतः ॥२०॥

20. śūlaṃ śūlādviniṣkṛṣya dadau tasyai pinākadhṛk .

Śiva, the wielder of the Pinaka, gave her a trident, drawing it forth from his own trident. And Krishna gave her a discus, having generated it from his own discus.
शङ्खञ्च वरुणः शक्तिं ददौ तस्यै हुताशनः ।
मारुतो दत्तवांश्चापं बाणपूर्णे तथेषुधी ॥२१॥

21. śaṅkhañca varuṇaḥ śaktiṃ dadau tasyai hutāśanaḥ .

Varuna gave her a conch, and the fire god (hutāśana) gave her a spear (śakti). Maruta (the wind god) also bestowed upon her a bow and two quivers full of arrows.
वज्रमिन्द्रः समुत्पाद्य कुलिशादमराधिपः ।
ददौ तस्यै सहस्राक्षो घण्टामैरावताद् गजात् ॥२२॥

22. vajramindraḥ samutpādya kuliśādamarādhipaḥ .

Indra, the lord of the immortals, having created a thunderbolt from his own thunderbolt, gave it to her. The thousand-eyed (Indra) also bestowed upon her a bell from his elephant Airavata.
कालदण्डाद्यमो दण्डं माशं चाम्बुपतिर्ददौ ।
प्रजापतिश्चाक्षमालां ददौ ब्रह्मा कमण्डलुम् ॥२३॥

23. kāladaṇḍādyamo daṇḍaṃ māśaṃ cāmbupatirdadau .

Yama gave a staff (daṇḍa) from his rod of time (kāladaṇḍa), and the lord of waters (ambupati) gave a noose (māśa). Prajāpati gave a rosary (akṣamālā), and Brahmā gave a water pot (kamaṇḍalu).
समस्तरोमकूपेषु निजरश्मीन् दिवाकरः ।
कालख्च दत्तवान् खड्गं तस्याश्चर्म च निर्मलम् ॥२४॥

24. samastaromakūpeṣu nijaraśmīn divākaraḥ .

The sun (divākara) infused his own rays into all her hair-pores. And Kālaka gave a sword (khaḍga) and her spotless (nirmala) shield (carma).
क्षीरोदश्चामलं हारमजरे च तथाम्बरे ।
चूडामणिं तथा दिव्यं कुण्डले कटकानि च ॥२५॥

25. kṣīrodaścāmalaṃ hāramajare ca tathāmbare .

And the Milk Ocean (kṣīroda) gave a spotless (amala) necklace (hāra), and also two imperishable (ajara) garments (ambara). He also gave a divine crest-jewel (cūḍāmaṇi), earrings (kuṇḍala), and bracelets (kaṭaka).
अर्धचन्द्रं तथा शुभ्रं केयूरान् सर्वबाहुषु ।
नूपुरौ विमलौ तद्वद् ग्रैवेयकमनुत्तमम् ।
अङ्गुलीयकरत्नानि समस्तास्वङ्गुलीषु च ॥२६॥

26. ardhacandraṃ tathā śubhraṃ keyūrān sarvabāhuṣu .

aṅgulīyakaratnāni samastāsvaṅgulīṣu ca.

He also gave a radiant crescent moon (ardhacandra), armlets (keyūra) for all arms, and similarly two spotless (vimala) anklets (nūpura), a peerless neck ornament (graiveyaka), and jeweled rings (aṅgulīykaratna) for all fingers.

Viśvakarmā gave her an exceedingly pure axe, various types of weapons, and impenetrable armor.

The ocean god gave her a garland of unfading lotus flowers for her head, another for her chest, and also an exceedingly beautiful lotus flower.

Himavat (the Himalaya mountain personified) presented a lion as her mount and various jewels. The lord of wealth, Kubera, gave an inexhaustible drinking cup filled with wine.

And Śeṣa, the king of all serpents (nāgeśa), who supports this earth, gave her a serpent necklace adorned with great jewels.

The Goddess, honored by other gods with ornaments and weapons, roared loudly again and again with a mighty laugh.

The entire sky was filled by her dreadful roar. An immeasurable and exceedingly great echo arose.

All the worlds were agitated, and the oceans trembled. The earth shook, and all the mountains moved.

With joy, the gods exclaimed, 'Victory!' to her, the lion-rider. And the sages, their forms humbly bowed with devotion (bhakti), praised her.

Seeing all three worlds greatly agitated, the enemies of the gods (asuras) rose up with all their armies prepared and their weapons uplifted.

Angrily exclaiming, "Ah! What is this?", Mahiṣāsura, surrounded by all the other demons, rushed towards that sound.

Mahiṣāsura then saw the Goddess, who with her splendor pervaded the three worlds, made the earth bow down with her footsteps, and had her crown scraping the sky.

Mahiṣāsura saw her (the Goddess) who had agitated all the nether regions with the twang of her bowstring, and who was established, having pervaded all directions on all sides with her thousand arms.

Then, a battle began between that goddess and the enemies of the gods. Many weapons and missiles were unleashed, igniting all directions.

Chiksura, a great demon and commander of Mahishasura's army, engaged in battle. Chamara also fought, accompanied by others and their four-limbed armies.

The great demon named Udagra fought with sixty thousand chariots. Mahahanu fought with a thousand myriad (ten million) chariots.

The great demon Asiloma fought with fifty million troops. And Vashkala fought in battle with six hundred myriad (six million) troops.

And other great asuras, who were there in tens of thousands, surrounded by chariots, elephants, and horses, fought in battle with the Goddess.

In that conflict, they fought against the Goddess with javelins, bhindipālas, spears (śakti), maces, as well as swords, axes, and paṭṭiśas.

Some of them hurled spears (śakti), while others threw nooses. But they, seeking to kill her, the Goddess, then proceeded to strike her with sword blows.

Then, the Goddess Chandi, showering her own weapons and missiles, playfully and effortlessly cut apart all those weapons and missiles [thrown by the demons].

With an unwearied face, the Goddess, while being praised by the divine sages, the sovereign lady unleashed weapons and missiles upon the bodies of the asuras.

He also, enraged, the Goddess's lion mount, with its mane agitated, roamed through the armies of the asuras like a forest fire.

niśvasān mumuce yān ca yudhyamānā raṇe ambikā

And from the breaths that Ambikā released while fighting in the fray, those very breaths instantly became hosts in hundreds of thousands.

They battled with axes, javelins, swords, and pattiśas (a type of spear/dart), destroying the demon armies, empowered by the Goddess's energy (śakti).
अवादयन्त पटहान् गणाः शङ्खांस्तथापरे ।
मृदङ्गांश्च तथैवान्ये तस्मिन् युद्धमहोत्सवे ॥५५॥

The hosts played drums, while others blew conches, and still others played mridangas in that great celebration of war.
ततो देवी त्रिशूलेन गदया शक्तिवृष्टिभिः ।

56. tato devī triśūlena gadayā śaktivṛṣṭibhiḥ .

Then the Goddess (devī) struck down the great asuras (mahāsurān) by hundreds with her trident, mace, showers of spears (śakti), and swords, along with other weapons.
पातयामास चैवान्यान् घण्टास्वनविमोहितान् ।
असुरान् भुवि पाशेन बद्ध्वा चान्यानकर्षयत् ॥५७॥

She also felled other asuras (asurān) who were bewildered by the sound of her bell, and having bound still others with a noose, she dragged them on the earth (bhuvi).
केचिद् द्विधा कृतास्तीक्ष्णैः खड्गपातैस्तथापरे ।
विपोथिता निपातेन गदया भुवि शेरते ॥५८॥

Some were cut into two by sharp sword-strokes, and others, crushed by a strike from the mace, lie on the earth (bhuvi).
वेमुश्च केचिद्रुधिरं मुसले भृशं हताः ।
केचिन्नपातिता भूमौ भिन्नाः शूलेन वक्षसि ॥५९॥

Some, severely struck by maces, vomited blood. Others fell to the ground, their chests pierced by spears.
निरन्तराः शरौघेण कृताः केचिद्रणाजिरे ।
शैलानुकारिणः प्राणान् मुमुचुस्त्रिदशार्दनाः ॥६०॥

60. nirantarāḥ śaraugheṇa kṛtāḥ kecidraṇājire .

Some were relentlessly assailed by a shower of arrows in the battlefield. The tormentors of the gods (demons), resembling mountains, gave up their lives.
केषाञ्चिद्वाहवश्छिन्नाश्छिन्नग्रीवास्तथापरे ।
शिरांसि पेतुरन्येषामन्ये मध्ये विदारिताः ॥६१॥

Some had their arms severed, and likewise, others had their necks severed. The heads of still others fell, while some were split in the middle.
विच्छिन्नजङ्घास्त्वपरे पेतुरुर्व्यां महासुराः ।
एकबाह्वक्षिचरणाः केचिद्देव्या द्विधा कृताः ॥६२॥

62. vicchinnajaṅghāstvapare petururvyāṃ mahāsurāḥ .

But other great demons, whose thighs were severed, fell to the earth. Some, left with only one arm, eye, or foot, were split in two by the Goddess.
छिन्नेऽपि चान्ये शिरसि पतिताः पुनरुत्थिताः ।
कबन्धा युयुधुर्देव्या गृहीतपरमायुधाः ॥६३॥

63. chinne'pi cānye śirasi patitāḥ punarutthitāḥ .

Even after their heads were severed and fell, other headless trunks (kabandhas) rose up again. These headless trunks, having grasped excellent weapons, continued to fight with the Goddess.
ननृतुश्चापरे तत्र युद्धे तूर्यलयाश्रिताः ।
कबन्धाश्छिन्नखिरसः खड्ग-शक्त्यृष्टिपाणयः ॥६४॥

64. nanṛtuścāpare tatra yuddhe tūryalayāśritāḥ .

64.
And there, others danced in the battle, attuned to the rhythm of the war drums. These headless trunks (kabandhas), whose heads were severed, brandished swords, spears, and lances in their hands.
तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति भाषन्तो देवीमन्ये महासुराः।
रुधिरौघविलुप्ताङ्गाः संग्रामे लोमहर्षणे ॥६५॥

In that hair-raising battle, other great demons, whose limbs were covered in torrents of blood, shouted "Stop! Stop!" at the Goddess.
पातितै रथनागाश्वैरसुरैश्च वसुन्धरा ।
अगम्या साभवत् तत्र यत्राभूत् स महारणः ॥६६॥

The earth there became impassable (agamya) due to the fallen chariots, elephants, horses, and demons, precisely where that great battle was taking place.
शोणितौघा महानद्यः सद्यस्तत्र विसुस्त्रुवुः ।
मध्ये चासुरसैन्यस्य वारणासुरवाजिनाम् ॥६७॥

67. śoṇitaughā mahānadyaḥ sadyastatra visustruvuḥ .

Great rivers, streams of blood, immediately gushed forth there amidst the demon (asura) army, specifically among the elephants and the demon-horses.
क्षणेन तन्महासैन्यमसुराणां तथाम्बिका ।
निन्ये क्षयं यथा वह्निस्तृणदारुमहाचयम् ॥६८॥

In an instant, Ambika brought that great army of the demons (asuras) to destruction, just as fire consumes a vast heap of grass and wood.
स च सिंहो महानादमुत्सृजन् धुतकेसरः ।
शरीरेभ्योऽमरारीणामसूनिव विचिन्वति ॥६९॥

69. sa ca siṃho mahānādamutsṛjan dhutakesaraḥ .

And that lion, emitting a great roar with its mane shaking, gathered the vital breaths (asūn) from the bodies of the enemies of the gods (asuras), as if plucking them out.
देव्या गणैश्च तैस्तत्र कृतं युद्धं तथासुरैः ।
यथैषां तुतुषुर्देवाः पुष्पवृष्टिमुचो दिवि ॥७०॥

70.
And a battle was fought there by the Goddess and her attendants (gaṇas) with the demons (asuras) in such a way that the gods, showering flowers from the sky, were pleased with them.
