ऋषिरुवाच ।
निशुम्भं निहतं दृष्ट्वा भ्रातरं प्राणसंमितम् ।
हन्यमानं बलं चैव शुम्भः क्रुद्धोऽब्रवीद्वचः ॥१॥
1. ṛṣiruvāca .
niśumbhaṃ nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā bhrātaraṃ prāṇasaṃmitam .
hanyamānaṃ balaṃ caiva śumbhaḥ kruddho'bravīdvacaḥ.
1. ṛṣiḥ uvāca niśumbham nihatam dṛṣṭvā bhrātaram prāṇasaṃmitam
hanyamānam balam ca eva śumbhaḥ kruddhaḥ abravīt vacaḥ
1. The sage said: Seeing Nishumbha, his brother, who was dear as his own life, slain, and his army being killed, Shumbha, enraged, spoke these words.
बलावलेपाद् दुष्टे त्वं मा दुर्गे गर्वमावह ।
अन्यासां बलमाश्रित्य युध्यसे यातिमानिनी ॥२॥
2. balāvalepād duṣṭe tvaṃ mā durge garvamāvaha .
anyāsāṃ balamāśritya yudhyase yātimāninī.
2. balāvalepāt duṣṭe tvam mā durge garvam āvaha
anyāsām balam āśritya yudhyase atimāninī
2. O wicked Durgā, do not cherish pride based on the arrogance of your power! You, who are excessively conceited, fight by relying on the strength of others.
श्रीदेव्युवाच ।
एकैवाहं जगत्यत्र द्वितीया का ममापरा ।
पश्यैता दुष्ट मय्येव विशन्त्यो मद्विभूतयः ॥३॥
3. śrīdevyuvāca .
ekaivāhaṃ jagatyatra dvitīyā kā mamāparā .
paśyaitā duṣṭa mayyeva viśantyo madvibhūtayaḥ.
3. śrīdevī uvāca ekā eva aham jagati atra dvitīyā kā mama
aparā paśya etāḥ duṣṭa mayi eva viśantyaḥ madvibhūtayaḥ
3. The glorious Goddess said: 'I am indeed the only one here in this world; who else is there, a second one, apart from me? O wicked one, behold these, my manifestations (vibhūtayaḥ), entering into me alone!'
ऋषिरुवाच ।
ततः समस्तास्ता देव्यो ब्रह्माणीप्रमुखा लयम् ।
तस्या देव्यास्तनौ जग्मुरेकावासीत्तदाम्बिका ॥४॥
4. ṛṣiruvāca .
tataḥ samastāstā devyo brahmāṇīpramukhā layam .
tasyā devyāstanau jagmurekāvāsīttadāmbikā.
4. ṛṣiḥ uvāca tataḥ samastāḥ tāḥ devyaḥ brahmāṇīpramukhāḥ
layam tasyāḥ devyāḥ tanau jagmuḥ ekā āsīt tadā ambikā
4. The sage said: 'Then, all those goddesses, headed by Brahmāṇī, merged and were absorbed into the body of that Goddess (Devī). At that time, Ambikā alone remained.'
श्रीदेव्युवाच ।
अहं विभूत्या बहुभिरिह रूपैर्यदास्थिता ।
सत्संहृतं मयैकैव तिष्ठाम्याजौ स्थिरो भव ॥५॥
5. śrīdevyuvāca .
ahaṃ vibhūtyā bahubhiriha rūpairyadāsthitā .
satsaṃhṛtaṃ mayaikaiva tiṣṭhāmyājau sthiro bhava.
5. śrīdevī uvāca aham vibhūtyā bahubhiḥ iha rūpaiḥ yadā āsthitā
sat saṃhṛtam mayā ekā eva tiṣṭhāmi ājau sthiraḥ bhava
5. The glorious Goddess said: 'When I am established here in many forms through my (divine) power (vibhūti), and when that (multitude) is withdrawn by me alone, I remain as one in battle. Therefore, be firm!'
ऋषिरुवाच ।
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं देव्याः शुम्भस्य चोभयोः ।
पश्यतां सर्वदेवानामसुराणां च दारुणम् ॥६॥
6. ṛṣiruvāca .
tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṃ devyāḥ śumbhasya cobhayoḥ .
paśyatāṃ sarvadevānāmasurāṇāṃ ca dāruṇam.
6. ṛṣiḥ uvāca | tataḥ pravavṛte yuddham devyāḥ śumbhasya
ca ubhayoḥ | paśyatām sarvadevānām asurāṇām ca dāruṇam
6. The sage said: Then, a dreadful battle commenced between the Goddess and Shumbha, witnessed by all the gods and asuras.
शरवर्षैः शितैः शस्त्रैस्तथा चास्त्रैः सुदारुणैः ।
तयोर्युद्धमभूद् भूयः सर्वलोकभयङ्करम् ॥७॥
7. śaravarṣaiḥ śitaiḥ śastraistathā cāstraiḥ sudāruṇaiḥ .
tayoryuddhamabhūd bhūyaḥ sarvalokabhayaṅkaram.
7. śaravarṣaiḥ śitaiḥ śastraiḥ tathā ca astraiḥ sudāruṇaiḥ
| tayoḥ yuddham abhūt bhūyaḥ sarvalokabhayaṅkaram
7. With showers of arrows, sharp weapons, and likewise, extremely dreadful missiles, their battle became even more terrifying to all the worlds.
दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि शतशो मुमुचे यान्यथाम्बिका ।
बभञ्ज तानि दैत्येन्द्रस्तत्प्रतीघातकर्तृभिः ॥८॥
8. divyānyastrāṇi śataśo mumuce yānyathāmbikā .
babhañja tāni daityendrastatpratīghātakartṛbhiḥ.
8. divyāni astrāṇi śataśaḥ mumuce yāni atha ambikā |
babhañja tāni daityendraḥ tatpratīghātakartṛbhiḥ
8. Then, the divine missiles that Ambika released by hundreds, the lord of demons (Shumbha) shattered those very missiles with his counter-attacking weapons.
मुक्तानि तेन चास्त्राणि दिव्यानि परमेश्वरी ।
बभञ्ज लीलयैवोग्रहुङ्कारोच्चारणादिभिः ॥९॥
9. muktāni tena cāstrāṇi divyāni parameśvarī .
babhañja līlayaivograhuṅkāroccāraṇādibhiḥ.
9. muktāni tena ca astrāṇi divyāni parameśvarī |
babhañja līlayā eva ugrahuṅkāroccāraṇādibhiḥ
9. And the divine missiles released by him (Shumbha), the Supreme Goddess shattered them with great ease (līlā), simply by uttering fierce roars (huṅkāra) and similar sounds.
ततः शरशतैर्देवीमाच्छादयत सोऽसुरः ।
सा च तत्कुपिता देवी धनुश्चिच्छेद चेषुभिः ॥१०॥
10. tataḥ śaraśatairdevīmācchādayata so'suraḥ .
sā ca tatkupitā devī dhanuściccheda ceṣubhiḥ.
10. tataḥ śara-śataiḥ devīm ācchādayata saḥ asuraḥ |
sā ca tat-kupitā devī dhanuḥ ciccheda ca iṣubhiḥ
10. Then, that asura covered the Goddess (devī) with hundreds of arrows. Angered by this, the Goddess (devī) then cut his bow with her own arrows.
छिन्ने धनुषि दैत्येन्द्रस्तथा शक्तिमथाददे ।
चिच्छेद देवी चक्रेण तामप्यस्य करे स्थिताम् ॥११॥
11. chinne dhanuṣi daityendrastathā śaktimathādade .
ciccheda devī cakreṇa tāmapyasya kare sthitām.
11. chinne dhanuṣi daityendraḥ tathā śaktim atha ādade
| ciccheda devī cakreṇa tām api asya kare sthitām
11. When his bow was severed, the lord of demons (daityendra) then took up a spear (śakti). With her discus, the Goddess (devī) severed that too, even while it was in his hand.
ततः खड्गमुपादाय शतचन्द्रं च भानुमत् ।
अभ्यधावत्तदा देवीं दैत्यानामधिपेश्वरः ॥१२॥
12. tataḥ khaḍgamupādāya śatacandraṃ ca bhānumat .
abhyadhāvattadā devīṃ daityānāmadhipeśvaraḥ.
12. tataḥ khaḍgam upādāya śata-candram ca bhānumat |
abhyadhāvat tadā devīm daityānām adhipa-īśvaraḥ
12. Then, taking up a sword (khaḍga) adorned with a hundred (moon-like) discs and shining brightly, the chief lord of the demons (daityānām adhipeśvaraḥ) rushed towards the Goddess (devī).
तस्यापतत एवाशु खड्गं चिच्छेद चण्डिका ।
धनुर्मुक्तैः शितैर्बाणैश्चर्म चार्ककरामलम् ॥१३॥
13. tasyāpatata evāśu khaḍgaṃ ciccheda caṇḍikā .
dhanurmuktaiḥ śitairbāṇaiścarma cārkakarāmalam.
13. tasya āpatata eva āśu khaḍgam ciccheda caṇḍikā |
dhanuḥ-muktaiḥ śitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ carma ca arka-kara-amalam
13. As he swiftly rushed forward, Caṇḍikā immediately severed his sword. She also cut his shield, which was as bright and pure as the sun's rays, with sharp arrows released from her bow.
अश्वांश्च पातयामास रथं सारथिना सह ।
हताश्वः स तदा दैत्यश्छिन्नधान्वा विसारथिः ।
जग्राह मुद्गरं घोरमम्बिकानिधनोद्यतः ॥१४॥
14. aśvāṃśca pātayāmāsa rathaṃ sārathinā saha .
hatāśvaḥ sa tadā daityaśchinnadhānvā visārathiḥ .
jagrāha mudgaraṃ ghoramambikānidhanodyataḥ.
14. aśvān ca pātayāmāsa ratham sārathinā
saha hatāśvaḥ sa tadā daityaḥ
chinnadhānvā visārathiḥ jagrāha
mudgaram ghoram ambikānidhanodyataḥ
14. She struck down the horses, along with the chariot and its charioteer. Then, that demon, whose horses were slain, whose bow was broken, and who was without a charioteer, seized a dreadful mace, ready to slay Ambikā.
चिच्छेदापततस्तस्य मुद्गरं निशितैः शरैः ।
तथापि सोऽभ्यधावत्तां मुष्टिमुद्यम्य वेगवान् ॥१५॥
15. cicchedāpatatastasya mudgaraṃ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ .
tathāpi so'bhyadhāvattāṃ muṣṭimudyamya vegavān.
15. ciccheda āpatataḥ tasya mudgaram niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
tathāpi saḥ abhyadhāvat tām muṣṭim udyamya vegavān
15. She severed his mace as it came towards her, using sharp arrows. Even so, he, full of speed, rushed towards her, raising his fist.
स मुष्टिं पातयामास हृदये दैत्यपुङ्गवः ।
देव्यास्तं चापि सा देवी तलेनोरस्यताडयत् ॥१६॥
16. sa muṣṭiṃ pātayāmāsa hṛdaye daityapuṅgavaḥ .
devyāstaṃ cāpi sā devī talenorasyatāḍayat.
16. saḥ muṣṭim pātayāmāsa hṛdaye daityapuṅgavaḥ
devyāḥ tam ca api sā devī talena urasi atāḍayat
16. That chief among demons struck her heart with his fist. And the Goddess, in turn, struck him on the chest with her palm.
तलप्रहाराभिहतो निपपात महीतले ।
स दैत्यराजः सहसा पुनरेव तथोत्थितः ॥१७॥
17. talaprahārābhihato nipapāta mahītale .
sa daityarājaḥ sahasā punareva tathotthitaḥ.
17. talaprahārābhihataḥ nipapāta mahītale saḥ
daityarājaḥ sahasā punaḥ eva tathā utthitaḥ
17. Struck by the blow of her palm, he fell to the ground. That king of demons then suddenly rose up again, just as before.
उत्पत्य च प्रगृह्योच्चैर्देवीं गगनमास्थितः ।
तत्रापि सा निराधारा युयुधे तेन चण्डिका ॥१८॥
18. utpatya ca pragṛhyoccairdevīṃ gaganamāsthitaḥ .
tatrāpi sā nirādhārā yuyudhe tena caṇḍikā.
18. utpatya ca pragṛhya uccaiḥ devīm gaganam āsthitaḥ
tatra api sā nirādhārā yuyudhe tena caṇḍikā
18. Having leaped up and seized the goddess, he positioned himself high in the sky. Even there, unsupported, Caṇḍikā fought with him.
नियुद्धं खे तदा दैत्यश्चण्डिका च परस्परम् ।
चक्रतुः प्रथमं सिद्धमुनिविस्मयकारकम् ॥१९॥
19. niyuddhaṃ khe tadā daityaścaṇḍikā ca parasparam .
cakratuḥ prathamaṃ siddhamunivismayakārakam.
19. niyuddham khe tadā daityaḥ caṇḍikā ca parasparam
cakratuḥ prathamam siddhamunivismayakārakam
19. Then, in the sky, the demon and Caṇḍikā engaged in mutual close combat, which initially caused astonishment to the Siddhas and Munis.
ततो नियुद्धं सुचिरं कृत्वा तेनाम्बिका सह ।
उत्पात्य भ्रामयामास चिक्षेप धरणीतले ॥२०॥
20. tato niyuddhaṃ suciraṃ kṛtvā tenāmbikā saha .
utpātya bhrāmayāmāsa cikṣepa dharaṇītale.
20. tataḥ niyuddham suciram kṛtvā tena ambikā
saha utpātya bhrāmayāmāsa cikṣepa dharaṇītale
20. Then, Ambikā, having fought him in a wrestling match for a long time, lifted him, spun him around, and threw him onto the surface of the earth.
स क्षिप्तो धरणीं प्राप्य मुष्टिमुद्यम्य वेगितः ।
अभ्यधावत दुष्टात्मा चण्डिकानिधनेच्छया ॥२१॥
21. sa kṣipto dharaṇīṃ prāpya muṣṭimudyamya vegitaḥ .
abhyadhāvata duṣṭātmā caṇḍikānidhanecchayā.
21. saḥ kṣiptaḥ dharaṇīm prāpya muṣṭim udyamya
vegitaḥ abhyadhāvata duṣṭātmā caṇḍikānidhanecchayā
21. That demon with an evil soul (ātman), having been thrown and landed on the earth, furiously raised his fist and rushed forward with the desire to destroy Caṇḍikā.
तमायान्तं ततो देवी सर्वदैत्यजनेश्वरम् ।
जगत्यां पातयामास भित्त्वा शूलेन वक्षसि ॥२२॥
22. tamāyāntaṃ tato devī sarvadaityajaneśvaram .
jagatyāṃ pātayāmāsa bhittvā śūlena vakṣasi.
22. tam āyāntam tataḥ devī sarvadaityajaneśvaram
jagatyām pātayāmāsa bhittvā śūlena vakṣasi
22. Then, as the lord of all demons was approaching, the Goddess pierced him in the chest with her spear and made him fall upon the earth.
स गतासुः पपातोर्व्यां देवीशूलाग्रविक्षतः ।
चालयन् सकलां पृथ्वीं साब्धिद्वीपां सपर्वताम् ॥२३॥
23. sa gatāsuḥ papātorvyāṃ devīśūlāgravikṣataḥ .
cālayan sakalāṃ pṛthvīṃ sābdhidvīpāṃ saparvatām.
23. sa gatāsuḥ papāta urvyām devīśūlāgravikṣataḥ
cālayan sakalām pṛthvīm sābdhidvīpām saparvatām
23. Lifeless, and wounded by the tip of the Goddess's spear, he fell upon the earth, shaking the entire world with its oceans, islands, and mountains.
ततः प्रसन्नमखिलं हते तस्मिन् दुरात्मनि ।
जगत्स्वास्थ्यमतीवाप निर्मलं चाभवन्नभः ॥२४॥
24. tataḥ prasannamakhilaṃ hate tasmin durātmani .
jagatsvāsthyamatīvāpa nirmalaṃ cābhavannabhaḥ.
24. tataḥ prasannam akhilam hate tasmin durātmani jagat
svāsthyam atīva āpa nirmalam ca abhavat nabhaḥ
24. Then, when that evil-minded demon was killed, the entire world became tranquil and attained great well-being, and the sky became clear.
उत्पातमेघाः सोल्का ये प्रागासंस्ते शमं ययुः ।
सरितो मार्गवाहिन्यस्तथासंस्तत्र पातिते ॥२५॥
25. utpātameghāḥ solkā ye prāgāsaṃste śamaṃ yayuḥ .
sarito mārgavāhinyastathāsaṃstatra pātite.
25. utpātameghāḥ solkāḥ ye prāk āsan te śamam yayuḥ
saritaḥ mārgavāhinyaḥ tathā āsan tatra pātite
25. The ominous clouds accompanied by meteors, which had appeared before, then subsided. The rivers also flowed in their proper courses when he was slain.
ततो देवगणाः सर्वे हर्षनिर्भमानसाः ।
बभूवुर्निहते तस्मिन् गन्धर्वा ललितं जगुः ॥२६॥
26. tato devagaṇāḥ sarve harṣanirbhamānasāḥ .
babhūvurnihate tasmin gandharvā lalitaṃ jaguḥ.
26. tataḥ devagaṇāḥ sarve harṣanirbharamānasāḥ
babhūvuḥ nihate tasmin gandharvāḥ lalitam jaguḥ
26. Then, all the hosts of gods became filled with joy upon his slaying. The Gandharvas sang melodiously.
अवादयंस्तथैवान्ये ननृतुश्चाप्सरोगणाः ।
ववुः पुण्यास्तथा वाताः सुप्रभोऽभूद्दिवाकरः ।
जज्वलुश्चाग्नयः शान्ताः शान्ता दिग्जनितस्वनाः ॥२७॥
27. avādayaṃstathaivānye nanṛtuścāpsarogaṇāḥ .
vavuḥ puṇyāstathā vātāḥ suprabho'bhūddivākaraḥ .
jajvaluścāgnayaḥ śāntāḥ śāntā digjanitasvanāḥ.
27. avādayan tathā eva anye nanṛtuḥ ca
apsarogaṇāḥ vavuḥ puṇyāḥ tathā vātāḥ
suprabhaḥ abhūt divākaraḥ jajvaluḥ ca
agnayaḥ śāntāḥ śāntāḥ digjanitasvanāḥ
27. Similarly, others played instruments, and hosts of Apsaras danced. Auspicious winds blew, and the sun became resplendent. Calm fires blazed, and sounds from all directions were quieted.
