भगवद्गीता       bhagavad-gītā - chapter-17, verse-19

मूढग्राहेणात्मनो यत्पीडया क्रियते तपः ।
परस्योत्सादनार्थं वा तत्तामसमुदाहृतम् ॥१९॥
19. mūḍhagrāheṇātmano yatpīḍayā kriyate tapaḥ ,
parasyotsādanārthaṁ vā tattāmasamudāhṛtam.

parasya utsādanārtham vā tat tāmasam udāhṛtam
19. yat tapaḥ mūḍhagrāheṇa ātmanaḥ pīḍayā vā parasya utsādanārtham kriyate,

19. That austerity (tapas) which is performed with foolish obstinacy, tormenting one's own self (ātman), or for the purpose of destroying others, is declared to be tamasic.
