महाभारतः mahābhārataḥ - book-12, chapter-32, verse-13

यथा हि पुरुषश्छिन्द्याद्वृक्षं परशुना वने ।
छेत्तुरेव भवेत्पापं परशोर्न कथंचन ॥१३॥

13. yathā hi puruṣaśchindyādvṛkṣaṁ paraśunā vane ,
chettureva bhavetpāpaṁ paraśorna kathaṁcana.

13. Just as a man would cut down a tree in the forest with an axe, the sin belongs to the person who cuts, and never to the axe.
