तिमिरोत्पाटनाद्देवि स्मृतिरित्यभिधीयते ॥४१॥

devi smaraṇotsukaniṣṭhānāṃ dharmādharmanirūpaṇāt
timirotpāṭanāt ca smṛtiḥ iti abhidhīyate

41. O goddess, because it leads those who are eager for remembrance to steadfastness, because it determines right and wrong (dharma and adharma), and because it tears apart the darkness, it is called smṛti (text of remembrance).
