ज्ञानिनैव सदा भाव्यं राम न ज्ञानबन्धुना ।
अज्ञातारं वरं मन्ये न पुनर्ज्ञानबन्धुताम् ॥ १ ॥

Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: 'O Rāma, one should always truly be a knower (jñānin), not merely a 'knowledge-friend' (jñāna-bandhu). I consider an ignorant person preferable, but not the state of being a 'knowledge-friend' (jñāna-bandhu).'
