महाभारतः       mahābhārataḥ - book-12, chapter-144, verse-2

नाहं ते विप्रियं कान्त कदाचिदपि संस्मरे ।
सर्वा वै विधवा नारी बहुपुत्रापि खेचर ।
शोच्या भवति बन्धूनां पतिहीना मनस्विनी ॥२॥
2. nāhaṁ te vipriyaṁ kānta kadācidapi saṁsmare ,
sarvā vai vidhavā nārī bahuputrāpi khecara ,
śocyā bhavati bandhūnāṁ patihīnā manasvinī.
2. na aham te vipriyam kānta kadācid
api saṃsmare sarvā vai vidhavā
nārī bahuputrā api khecara śocyā
bhavati bandhūnām patihīnā manasvinī
2. kānta! aham te vipriyam kadācid api na saṃsmare.
khecara! vai sarvā nārī vidhavā bahuputrā api manasvinī patihīnā bandhūnām śocyā bhavati.
2. My beloved (kānta)! I never recall having done anything disagreeable to you. O sky-dweller (khecara)! Indeed, any woman (nārī) who is a widow (vidhavā), even if she has many children (bahubhutrā) and is high-minded (manasvinī), becomes pitiable (śocyā) to her relatives when she is without her husband (patihīnā).
