अर्जुन उवाच ।
एवं सततयुक्ता ये भक्तास्त्वां पर्युपासते ।
ये चाप्यक्षरमव्यक्तं तेषां के योगवित्तमाः ॥१॥
1. arjuna uvāca ,
evaṁ satatayuktā ye bhaktāstvāṁ paryupāsate ,
ye cāpyakṣaramavyaktaṁ teṣāṁ ke yogavittamāḥ.
1. arjuna uvāca evam satata-yuktāḥ ye bhaktāḥ tvām paryupāsate
ye ca api akṣaram avyaktam teṣām ke yoga-vit-tamāḥ
1. Arjuna uvāca: evam ye satata-yuktāḥ bhaktāḥ tvām paryupāsate,
ye ca api akṣaram avyaktam (paryupāsate),
teṣām ke yoga-vit-tamāḥ?
1. Arjuna said: "Which of those devotees (bhakta) who are constantly devoted and worship You, and also those who worship the imperishable, unmanifest (brahman), are considered more perfect in (yoga)?"
श्रीभगवानुवाच ।
मय्यावेश्य मनो ये मां नित्ययुक्ता उपासते ।
श्रद्धया परयोपेतास्ते मे युक्ततमा मताः ॥२॥
2. śrībhagavānuvāca ,
mayyāveśya mano ye māṁ nityayuktā upāsate ,
śraddhayā parayopetāste me yuktatamā matāḥ.
2. śrībhagavān uvāca | mayi āveśya manaḥ ye mām nityayuktāḥ
upāsate | śraddhayā parayā upetāḥ te me yuktatamāḥ matāḥ
2. śrībhagavān uvāca ye nityayuktāḥ parayā śraddhayā upetāḥ mayi manaḥ āveśya mām upāsate,
te me yuktatamāḥ matāḥ
2. The Blessed Lord said: Those who, fixing their minds on Me and ever steadfastly engaged, worship Me, endowed with supreme faith (śraddhā), are considered by Me to be the most perfectly devoted (yoga).
ये त्वक्षरमनिर्देश्यमव्यक्तं पर्युपासते ।
सर्वत्रगमचिन्त्यं च कूटस्थमचलं ध्रुवम् ॥३॥
3. ye tvakṣaramanirdeśyamavyaktaṁ paryupāsate ,
sarvatragamacintyaṁ ca kūṭasthamacalaṁ dhruvam.
3. ye tu akṣaram anirdeśyam avyaktam paryupāsate |
sarvatragam acintyam ca kūṭastham acalam dhruvam
3. ye tu akṣaram anirdeśyam avyaktam sarvatragam
acintyam ca kūṭastham acalam dhruvam paryupāsate
3. But those who worship the imperishable, the indescribable, the unmanifest, the all-pervading, the unthinkable, and that which is immutable, immovable, and eternal.
संनियम्येन्द्रियग्रामं सर्वत्र समबुद्धयः ।
ते प्राप्नुवन्ति मामेव सर्वभूतहिते रताः ॥४॥
4. saṁniyamyendriyagrāmaṁ sarvatra samabuddhayaḥ ,
te prāpnuvanti māmeva sarvabhūtahite ratāḥ.
4. saṃniyamya indriyagrāmam sarvatra samabuddhayaḥ
| te prāpnuvanti mām eva sarvabhūtahite ratāḥ
4. (ye) indriyagrāmam saṃniyamya sarvatra samabuddhayaḥ sarvabhūtahite ratāḥ,
te mām eva prāpnuvanti
4. Having completely restrained their senses, with an equal disposition everywhere, and engaged in the welfare of all beings, they indeed attain Me.
क्लेशोऽधिकतरस्तेषामव्यक्तासक्तचेतसाम् ।
अव्यक्ता हि गतिर्दुःखं देहवद्भिरवाप्यते ॥५॥
5. kleśo'dhikatarasteṣāmavyaktāsaktacetasām ,
avyaktā hi gatirduḥkhaṁ dehavadbhiravāpyate.
5. kleśaḥ adhikataraḥ teṣām avyaktāsaktacetasām |
avyaktā hi gatiḥ duḥkham dehavadbhiḥ avāpyate
5. avyaktāsaktacetasām teṣām kleśaḥ adhikataraḥ
hi dehavadbhiḥ avyaktā gatiḥ duḥkham avāpyate
5. The difficulty is much greater for those whose minds are fixed on the unmanifest. For the path to the unmanifest is attained with pain and trouble by embodied beings.
ये तु सर्वाणि कर्माणि मयि संन्यस्य मत्पराः ।
अनन्येनैव योगेन मां ध्यायन्त उपासते ॥६॥
6. ye tu sarvāṇi karmāṇi mayi saṁnyasya matparāḥ ,
ananyenaiva yogena māṁ dhyāyanta upāsate.
6. ye tu sarvāṇi karmāṇi mayi saṃnyasya matparāḥ
ananyena eva yogena mām dhyāyantaḥ upāsate
6. ye tu matparāḥ mayi sarvāṇi karmāṇi saṃnyasya
ananyena eva yogena mām dhyāyantaḥ upāsate
6. But those who, with Me as their supreme goal, dedicating all actions (karma) to Me, and meditating on Me through exclusive spiritual discipline (yoga), worship Me.
तेषामहं समुद्धर्ता मृत्युसंसारसागरात् ।
भवामि नचिरात्पार्थ मय्यावेशितचेतसाम् ॥७॥
7. teṣāmahaṁ samuddhartā mṛtyusaṁsārasāgarāt ,
bhavāmi nacirātpārtha mayyāveśitacetasām.
7. teṣām aham samuddhartā mṛtyu saṃsāra sāgarāt
bhavāmi nacirāt pārtha mayi āveśita cetasām
7. pārtha mayi āveśita cetasām teṣām aham mṛtyu
saṃsāra sāgarāt nacirāt samuddhartā bhavāmi
7. O Pārtha (Arjuna), for those whose minds are fixed on Me, I swiftly become their deliverer from the ocean of death and rebirth (saṃsāra).
मय्येव मन आधत्स्व मयि बुद्धिं निवेशय ।
निवसिष्यसि मय्येव अत ऊर्ध्वं न संशयः ॥८॥
8. mayyeva mana ādhatsva mayi buddhiṁ niveśaya ,
nivasiṣyasi mayyeva ata ūrdhvaṁ na saṁśayaḥ.
8. mayi eva manaḥ ādhātsva mayi buddhim niveśaya
nivasiṣyasi mayi eva ataḥ ūrdhvam na saṃśayaḥ
8. manaḥ mayi eva ādhātsva,
buddhim mayi niveśaya ataḥ ūrdhvam mayi eva nivasiṣyasi,
na saṃśayaḥ
8. Fix your mind on Me alone, and place your intellect (buddhi) in Me. You will certainly dwell in Me hereafter; there is no doubt.
अथ चित्तं समाधातुं न शक्नोषि मयि स्थिरम् ।
अभ्यासयोगेन ततो मामिच्छाप्तुं धनंजय ॥९॥
9. atha cittaṁ samādhātuṁ na śaknoṣi mayi sthiram ,
abhyāsayogena tato māmicchāptuṁ dhanaṁjaya.
9. atha cittam samādhātum na śaknoṣi mayi sthiram
abhyāsa yogena tataḥ mām iccha āptum dhananjaya
9. atha cet mayi cittam sthiram samādhātum na śaknoṣi,
tataḥ abhyāsa yogena mām āptum iccha dhananjaya
9. Now, if you are unable to fix your mind steadily on Me, then, O Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), seek to attain Me through the spiritual discipline (yoga) of practice.
अभ्यासेऽप्यसमर्थोऽसि मत्कर्मपरमो भव ।
मदर्थमपि कर्माणि कुर्वन्सिद्धिमवाप्स्यसि ॥१०॥
10. abhyāse'pyasamartho'si matkarmaparamo bhava ,
madarthamapi karmāṇi kurvansiddhimavāpsyasi.
10. abhyāse api asamarthaḥ asi matkarma-paramaḥ bhava
mat-artham api karmāṇi kurvan siddhim avāpsyasi
10. abhyāse api asamarthaḥ asi matkarma-paramaḥ bhava
api mat-artham karmāṇi kurvan siddhim avāpsyasi
10. If you are even unable to engage in spiritual practice (abhyāsa), then be dedicated to performing actions for Me. By undertaking actions for My sake, you will achieve perfection.
अथैतदप्यशक्तोऽसि कर्तुं मद्योगमाश्रितः ।
सर्वकर्मफलत्यागं ततः कुरु यतात्मवान् ॥११॥
11. athaitadapyaśakto'si kartuṁ madyogamāśritaḥ ,
sarvakarmaphalatyāgaṁ tataḥ kuru yatātmavān.
11. atha etat api aśaktaḥ asi kartum mat-yogam āśritaḥ
sarva-karma-phala-tyāgam tataḥ kuru yata-ātmavān
11. atha etat api kartum aśaktaḥ asi mat-yogam āśritaḥ
tataḥ sarva-karma-phala-tyāgam yata-ātmavān kuru
11. Now, if you are also unable to perform even this, then, having taken refuge in My discipline (yoga), perform the renunciation of the fruits of all actions, being self-controlled (yata-ātmavān).
श्रेयो हि ज्ञानमभ्यासाज्ज्ञानाद्ध्यानं विशिष्यते ।
ध्यानात्कर्मफलत्यागस्त्यागाच्छान्तिरनन्तरम् ॥१२॥
12. śreyo hi jñānamabhyāsājjñānāddhyānaṁ viśiṣyate ,
dhyānātkarmaphalatyāgastyāgācchāntiranantaram.
12. śreyaḥ hi jñānam abhyāsāt jñānāt dhyānam viśiṣyate
dhyānāt karma-phala-tyāgaḥ tyāgāt śāntiḥ anantaram
12. hi abhyāsāt jñānam śreyaḥ jñānāt dhyānam viśiṣyate
dhyānāt karma-phala-tyāgaḥ tyāgāt anantaram śāntiḥ
12. Indeed, knowledge is superior to spiritual practice (abhyāsa). Meditation (dhyāna) is considered superior to knowledge. The renunciation of the fruits of action is superior to meditation (dhyāna). From such renunciation, peace follows immediately.
अद्वेष्टा सर्वभूतानां मैत्रः करुण एव च ।
निर्ममो निरहंकारः समदुःखसुखः क्षमी ॥१३॥
13. adveṣṭā sarvabhūtānāṁ maitraḥ karuṇa eva ca ,
nirmamo nirahaṁkāraḥ samaduḥkhasukhaḥ kṣamī.
13. adveṣṭā sarva-bhūtānām maitraḥ karuṇaḥ eva ca
nirmamaḥ nirahaṅkāraḥ sama-duḥkha-sukhaḥ kṣamī
13. sarva-bhūtānām adveṣṭā maitraḥ eva ca karuṇaḥ
nirmamaḥ nirahaṅkāraḥ sama-duḥkha-sukhaḥ kṣamī
13. One who bears no ill-will towards any living creature, who is friendly and compassionate, free from possessiveness and ego (ahaṅkāra), equipoised in sorrow and joy, and forgiving.
संतुष्टः सततं योगी यतात्मा दृढनिश्चयः ।
मय्यर्पितमनोबुद्धिर्यो मद्भक्तः स मे प्रियः ॥१४॥
14. saṁtuṣṭaḥ satataṁ yogī yatātmā dṛḍhaniścayaḥ ,
mayyarpitamanobuddhiryo madbhaktaḥ sa me priyaḥ.
14. saṃtuṣṭaḥ satataṃ yogī yatātmā dṛḍhaniścayaḥ
mayyarpitamanobuddhiḥ yaḥ madbhaktaḥ saḥ me priyaḥ
14. yaḥ yogī satataṃ saṃtuṣṭaḥ yatātmā dṛḍhaniścayaḥ
mayyarpitamanobuddhiḥ saḥ madbhaktaḥ me priyaḥ
14. That practitioner of yoga (yoga) who is ever-contented, self-controlled (ātman), possesses firm resolve, and whose mind and intellect are dedicated to Me—such a devotee (bhakti) is dear to Me.
यस्मान्नोद्विजते लोको लोकान्नोद्विजते च यः ।
हर्षामर्षभयोद्वेगैर्मुक्तो यः स च मे प्रियः ॥१५॥
15. yasmānnodvijate loko lokānnodvijate ca yaḥ ,
harṣāmarṣabhayodvegairmukto yaḥ sa ca me priyaḥ.
15. yasmāt na udvijate lokaḥ lokāt na udvijate ca yaḥ
harṣāmarṣabhayodvegaiḥ muktaḥ yaḥ saḥ ca me priyaḥ
15. yasmāt lokaḥ na udvijate ca yaḥ lokāt na udvijate
yaḥ harṣāmarṣabhayodvegaiḥ muktaḥ saḥ ca me priyaḥ
15. That person from whom the world is not agitated, and who is not agitated by the world, and who is free from joy, envy, fear, and anxiety—such a one is dear to Me.
अनपेक्षः शुचिर्दक्ष उदासीनो गतव्यथः ।
सर्वारम्भपरित्यागी यो मद्भक्तः स मे प्रियः ॥१६॥
16. anapekṣaḥ śucirdakṣa udāsīno gatavyathaḥ ,
sarvārambhaparityāgī yo madbhaktaḥ sa me priyaḥ.
16. anapekṣaḥ śuciḥ dakṣaḥ udāsīnaḥ gatavyathaḥ
sarvārambhaparityāgī yaḥ madbhaktaḥ saḥ me priyaḥ
16. yaḥ anapekṣaḥ śuciḥ dakṣaḥ udāsīnaḥ gatavyathaḥ
sarvārambhaparityāgī saḥ madbhaktaḥ me priyaḥ
16. That devotee (bhakti) who is free from expectation, pure, capable, indifferent, released from distress, and who renounces all undertakings—such a one is dear to Me.
यो न हृष्यति न द्वेष्टि न शोचति न काङ्क्षति ।
शुभाशुभपरित्यागी भक्तिमान्यः स मे प्रियः ॥१७॥
17. yo na hṛṣyati na dveṣṭi na śocati na kāṅkṣati ,
śubhāśubhaparityāgī bhaktimānyaḥ sa me priyaḥ.
17. yaḥ na hṛṣyati na dveṣṭi na śocati na kāṅkṣati
śubhāśubhapa ityāgī bhaktimān yaḥ saḥ me priyaḥ
17. yaḥ na hṛṣyati na dveṣṭi na śocati na kāṅkṣati
yaḥ śubhāśubhapa ityāgī bhaktimān saḥ me priyaḥ
17. That person who neither rejoices nor dislikes, neither grieves nor desires, and who has renounced both auspicious and inauspicious outcomes—such a devotee (bhakti) is dear to Me.
समः शत्रौ च मित्रे च तथा मानावमानयोः ।
शीतोष्णसुखदुःखेषु समः सङ्गविवर्जितः ॥१८॥
18. samaḥ śatrau ca mitre ca tathā mānāvamānayoḥ ,
śītoṣṇasukhaduḥkheṣu samaḥ saṅgavivarjitaḥ.
18. samaḥ śatrau ca mitre ca tathā mānāvamānayoḥ
śītoṣṇasukhaduḥkheṣu samaḥ saṅgavivarjitaḥ
18. śatrau ca mitre ca tathā mānāvamānayoḥ
śītoṣṇasukhaduḥkheṣu saṅgavivarjitaḥ samaḥ
18. Impartial towards enemies and friends, equally so in honor and dishonor, in cold, heat, pleasure, and pain, and free from attachment.
तुल्यनिन्दास्तुतिर्मौनी संतुष्टो येन केनचित् ।
अनिकेतः स्थिरमतिर्भक्तिमान्मे प्रियो नरः ॥१९॥
19. tulyanindāstutirmaunī saṁtuṣṭo yena kenacit ,
aniketaḥ sthiramatirbhaktimānme priyo naraḥ.
19. tulyanindāstutiḥ maunī saṃtuṣṭaḥ yena kenacit
aniketaḥ sthiramatiḥ bhaktimān me priyaḥ naraḥ
19. tulyanindāstutiḥ maunī yena kenacit saṃtuṣṭaḥ
aniketaḥ sthiramatiḥ bhaktimān naraḥ me priyaḥ
19. A person who treats praise and blame equally, is silent, content with whatever he receives, without a fixed dwelling, steady in intellect, and full of devotion (bhakti), is dear to Me.
ये तु धर्म्यामृतमिदं यथोक्तं पर्युपासते ।
श्रद्दधाना मत्परमा भक्तास्तेऽतीव मे प्रियाः ॥२०॥
20. ye tu dharmyāmṛtamidaṁ yathoktaṁ paryupāsate ,
śraddadhānā matparamā bhaktāste'tīva me priyāḥ.
20. ye tu dharmyāmṛtam idam yathoktam paryupāsate
śraddadhānāḥ matparamāḥ bhaktāḥ te atīva me priyāḥ
20. ye tu śraddadhānāḥ matparamāḥ bhaktāḥ idam yathoktam
dharmyāmṛtam paryupāsate te me atīva priyāḥ
20. But those who, with faith (śraddhā) and taking Me as their supreme goal, devoutly follow this nectar of natural law (dharma) as it has been taught—those devotees (bhaktaḥ) are exceedingly dear to Me.
