भूय एव महाबाहो शृणु मे परमं वचः ।
यत्तेऽहं प्रीयमाणाय वक्ष्यामि हितकाम्यया ॥१॥

bhūya eva mahābāho śṛṇu me paramaṁ vacaḥ ,
yatte'haṁ prīyamāṇāya vakṣyāmi hitakāmyayā.

1. The Supreme Lord (Bhagavān) said: O mighty-armed Arjuna, hear again My supreme word, which I will speak to you, who are very dear to Me, out of a desire for your welfare.
न मे विदुः सुरगणाः प्रभवं न महर्षयः ।
अहमादिर्हि देवानां महर्षीणां च सर्वशः ॥२॥
2. na me viduḥ suragaṇāḥ prabhavaṁ na maharṣayaḥ ,
ahamādirhi devānāṁ maharṣīṇāṁ ca sarvaśaḥ.
2. na me viduḥ suragaṇāḥ prabhavam na maharṣayaḥ
aham ādiḥ hi devānām maharṣīṇām ca sarvaśaḥ
2. suragaṇāḥ na me prabhavam viduḥ na maharṣayaḥ

2. Neither the hosts of gods nor the great sages know My origin or My supreme power. For I am, in all respects, the source of both the gods and the great sages.
यो मामजमनादिं च वेत्ति लोकमहेश्वरम् ।
असंमूढः स मर्त्येषु सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥३॥
3. yo māmajamanādiṁ ca vetti lokamaheśvaram ,
asaṁmūḍhaḥ sa martyeṣu sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate.
3. yaḥ mām ajam anādim ca vetti lokamaheśvaram
asaṃmūḍhaḥ saḥ martyeṣu sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate
3. martyeṣu yaḥ mām ajam anādim ca lokamaheśvaram vetti,
saḥ asaṃmūḍhaḥ sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate
3. Among mortals, whoever knows Me as the unborn, beginningless, and the great lord of all worlds, that undeluded person is completely liberated (mokṣa) from all sins.
बुद्धिर्ज्ञानमसंमोहः क्षमा सत्यं दमः शमः ।
सुखं दुःखं भवोऽभावो भयं चाभयमेव च ॥४॥
4. buddhirjñānamasaṁmohaḥ kṣamā satyaṁ damaḥ śamaḥ ,
sukhaṁ duḥkhaṁ bhavo'bhāvo bhayaṁ cābhayameva ca.

4. Intellect, knowledge, freedom from delusion, forgiveness, truthfulness, control of the senses, mental tranquility, happiness, sorrow, existence, non-existence, fear, and indeed fearlessness—
अहिंसा समता तुष्टिस्तपो दानं यशोऽयशः ।
भवन्ति भावा भूतानां मत्त एव पृथग्विधाः ॥५॥
5. ahiṁsā samatā tuṣṭistapo dānaṁ yaśo'yaśaḥ ,
bhavanti bhāvā bhūtānāṁ matta eva pṛthagvidhāḥ.
5. ahiṃsā samatā tuṣṭiḥ tapaḥ dānam yaśaḥ ayaśaḥ
bhavanti bhāvāḥ bhūtānām mattaḥ eva pṛthagvidhāḥ

5. Non-violence, equanimity, contentment, austerity (tapas), charity (dāna), fame, and infamy—these various states of being for all creatures arise solely from Me.
महर्षयः सप्त पूर्वे चत्वारो मनवस्तथा ।
मद्भावा मानसा जाता येषां लोक इमाः प्रजाः ॥६॥
6. maharṣayaḥ sapta pūrve catvāro manavastathā ,
madbhāvā mānasā jātā yeṣāṁ loka imāḥ prajāḥ.
6. maharṣayaḥ sapta pūrve catvāraḥ manavaḥ tathā
madbhāvāḥ mānasāḥ jātāḥ yeṣām loke imāḥ prajāḥ
6. sapta pūrve maharṣayaḥ tathā ca catvāraḥ manavaḥ
madbhāvāḥ mānasāḥ jātāḥ yeṣām loke imāḥ prajāḥ (bhavanti)
6. The seven great ancient sages, and similarly the four Manus, were born from My mind and embody My nature; from them all these beings in the world have sprung forth.
एतां विभूतिं योगं च मम यो वेत्ति तत्त्वतः ।
सोऽविकम्पेन योगेन युज्यते नात्र संशयः ॥७॥
7. etāṁ vibhūtiṁ yogaṁ ca mama yo vetti tattvataḥ ,
so'vikampena yogena yujyate nātra saṁśayaḥ.
7. etām vibhūtim yogam ca mama yaḥ vetti tattvataḥ
saḥ avikampena yogena yujyate na atra saṃśayaḥ
7. yaḥ mama etām vibhūtim ca yogam tattvataḥ vetti,
saḥ avikampena yogena yujyate.
atra saṃśayaḥ na.
7. One who truly understands this glory and divine power (yoga) of Mine becomes united with Me through unwavering spiritual discipline (yoga). There is no doubt about this.
अहं सर्वस्य प्रभवो मत्तः सर्वं प्रवर्तते ।
इति मत्वा भजन्ते मां बुधा भावसमन्विताः ॥८॥
8. ahaṁ sarvasya prabhavo mattaḥ sarvaṁ pravartate ,
iti matvā bhajante māṁ budhā bhāvasamanvitāḥ.
8. aham sarvasya prabhavaḥ mattaḥ sarvam pravartate
iti matvā bhajante mām budhāḥ bhāvasamanvitāḥ
8. aham sarvasya prabhavaḥ.
mattaḥ sarvam pravartate.
iti matvā bhāvasamanvitāḥ budhāḥ mām bhajante.
8. I am the source of all; from Me everything emanates. Understanding this, the wise, filled with loving devotion (bhāva), worship Me.
मच्चित्ता मद्गतप्राणा बोधयन्तः परस्परम् ।
कथयन्तश्च मां नित्यं तुष्यन्ति च रमन्ति च ॥९॥
9. maccittā madgataprāṇā bodhayantaḥ parasparam ,
kathayantaśca māṁ nityaṁ tuṣyanti ca ramanti ca.
9. maccittāḥ madgataprāṇāḥ bodhayantaḥ parasparam
kathayantaḥ ca mām nityam tuṣyanti ca ramanti ca
9. maccittāḥ madgataprāṇāḥ (te) parasparam bodhayantaḥ
ca mām nityam kathayantaḥ ca tuṣyanti ca ramanti ca
9. With their thoughts fixed on Me and their lives dedicated to Me, they enlighten each other and constantly speak of Me. Thus, they find satisfaction and rejoice.
तेषां सततयुक्तानां भजतां प्रीतिपूर्वकम् ।
ददामि बुद्धियोगं तं येन मामुपयान्ति ते ॥१०॥
10. teṣāṁ satatayuktānāṁ bhajatāṁ prītipūrvakam ,
dadāmi buddhiyogaṁ taṁ yena māmupayānti te.
10. teṣām satatayuktānām bhajatām prītipūrvakam
dadāmi buddhiyogam tam yena mām upayānti te
10. prītipūrvakam satatayuktānām bhajatām teṣām tam buddhiyogam dadāmi,
yena te mām upayānti.
10. To those who are constantly united with Me (yoga), devoted, and worship Me with love (prīti-pūrvakam), I bestow that wisdom (buddhi-yoga) by which they come to Me.
तेषामेवानुकम्पार्थमहमज्ञानजं तमः ।
नाशयाम्यात्मभावस्थो ज्ञानदीपेन भास्वता ॥११॥
11. teṣāmevānukampārthamahamajñānajaṁ tamaḥ ,
nāśayāmyātmabhāvastho jñānadīpena bhāsvatā.
11. teṣām eva anukampārtham aham ajñānajam tamaḥ
nāśayāmi ātmabhāvasthaḥ jñānadīpena bhāsvatā
11. aham ātmabhāvasthaḥ teṣām eva anukampārtham
ajñānajam tamaḥ bhāsvatā jñānadīpena nāśayāmi
11. Out of pure compassion for them, I, dwelling within their inner being (ātman), dispel the darkness born of ignorance with the luminous lamp of knowledge.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
परं ब्रह्म परं धाम पवित्रं परमं भवान् ।
पुरुषं शाश्वतं दिव्यमादिदेवमजं विभुम् ॥१२॥
12. arjuna uvāca ,
paraṁ brahma paraṁ dhāma pavitraṁ paramaṁ bhavān ,
puruṣaṁ śāśvataṁ divyamādidevamajaṁ vibhum.
12. arjuna uvāca param brahma param dhāma pavitram paramam
bhavān puruṣam śāśvatam divyam ādidevam ajam vibhum
12. arjunaḥ uvāca bhavān param brahma param dhāma paramam
pavitram śāśvatam divyam puruṣam ādidevam ajam vibhum (asti)
12. Arjuna said: 'You are the Supreme Brahman, the ultimate abode, and the supreme purifier. You are the eternal, divine Person (puruṣa), the primordial Deity, the unborn, and the all-pervading.'
आहुस्त्वामृषयः सर्वे देवर्षिर्नारदस्तथा ।
असितो देवलो व्यासः स्वयं चैव ब्रवीषि मे ॥१३॥
13. āhustvāmṛṣayaḥ sarve devarṣirnāradastathā ,
asito devalo vyāsaḥ svayaṁ caiva bravīṣi me.
13. āhuḥ tvām ṛṣayaḥ sarve devarṣiḥ nāradaḥ tathā
asitaḥ devalaḥ vyāsaḥ svayam ca eva bravīṣi me
13. sarve ṛṣayaḥ devarṣiḥ nāradaḥ tathā asitaḥ devalaḥ
vyāsaḥ (api) tvām āhuḥ ca svayam eva me bravīṣi
13. All the sages, including the divine sage Nārada, Asita, Devala, and Vyāsa, declare You to be such. Moreover, You Yourself confirm this to me.
सर्वमेतदृतं मन्ये यन्मां वदसि केशव ।
न हि ते भगवन्व्यक्तिं विदुर्देवा न दानवाः ॥१४॥
14. sarvametadṛtaṁ manye yanmāṁ vadasi keśava ,
na hi te bhagavanvyaktiṁ vidurdevā na dānavāḥ.
14. sarvam etat ṛtam manye yat mām vadasi keśava na
hi te bhagavan vyaktim viduḥ devāḥ na dānavāḥ
14. keśava yat mām vadasi etat sarvam ṛtam manye hi
bhagavan te vyaktim devāḥ na dānavāḥ na viduḥ
14. O Keśava, I consider everything You have told me to be true. Indeed, O Lord, neither the gods nor the demons fully comprehend Your manifestation.
स्वयमेवात्मनात्मानं वेत्थ त्वं पुरुषोत्तम ।
भूतभावन भूतेश देवदेव जगत्पते ॥१५॥
15. svayamevātmanātmānaṁ vettha tvaṁ puruṣottama ,
bhūtabhāvana bhūteśa devadeva jagatpate.
15. svayam eva ātmanā ātmānam vettha tvam puruṣottama
bhūtabhāvana bhūteśa devadeva jagatpate
15. puruṣottama bhūtabhāvana bhūteśa devadeva
jagatpate tvam svayam eva ātmanā ātmānam vettha
15. O Supreme Person (puruṣa), O origin of all beings, O Lord of all beings, O God of gods, O Lord of the universe, You alone know your Self (ātman) by your Self (ātman).
वक्तुमर्हस्यशेषेण दिव्या ह्यात्मविभूतयः ।
याभिर्विभूतिभिर्लोकानिमांस्त्वं व्याप्य तिष्ठसि ॥१६॥
16. vaktumarhasyaśeṣeṇa divyā hyātmavibhūtayaḥ ,
yābhirvibhūtibhirlokānimāṁstvaṁ vyāpya tiṣṭhasi.
16. vaktum arhasi aśeṣeṇa divyāḥ hi ātmavibhūtayaḥ
yābhiḥ vibhūtibhiḥ lokān imān tvam vyāpya tiṣṭhasi
16. tvam aśeṣeṇa divyāḥ hi ātma-vibhūtayaḥ vaktum arhasi,
yābhiḥ vibhūtibhiḥ imān lokān vyāpya tiṣṭhasi
16. You alone are capable of describing fully your divine manifestations (vibhūti), by which you pervade and encompass all these worlds.
कथं विद्यामहं योगिंस्त्वां सदा परिचिन्तयन् ।
केषु केषु च भावेषु चिन्त्योऽसि भगवन्मया ॥१७॥
17. kathaṁ vidyāmahaṁ yogiṁstvāṁ sadā paricintayan ,
keṣu keṣu ca bhāveṣu cintyo'si bhagavanmayā.
17. katham vidyām aham yogin tvām sadā paricintayan
keṣu keṣu ca bhāveṣu cintyaḥ asi bhagavan mayā
17. yogin bhagavan katham aham sadā tvām paricintayan
vidyām? ca mayā keṣu keṣu bhāveṣu cintyaḥ asi?
17. O Yogin, how can I constantly contemplate You and thereby come to know You? And in which specific aspects, O Lord, should You be meditated upon by me?
विस्तरेणात्मनो योगं विभूतिं च जनार्दन ।
भूयः कथय तृप्तिर्हि शृण्वतो नास्ति मेऽमृतम् ॥१८॥
18. vistareṇātmano yogaṁ vibhūtiṁ ca janārdana ,
bhūyaḥ kathaya tṛptirhi śṛṇvato nāsti me'mṛtam.
18. vistareṇa ātmanaḥ yogam vibhūtim ca janārdana
bhūyaḥ kathaya tṛptiḥ hi śṛṇvataḥ na asti me amṛtam
18. janārdana,
bhūyaḥ ātmanaḥ yogam ca vibhūtim vistareṇa kathaya; hi me amṛtam śṛṇvataḥ tṛptiḥ na asti.
18. O Janardana, please describe again in detail your mystic power (yoga) and manifestations (vibhūti), for my ears are never satiated by listening to this nectar-like discourse.
श्रीभगवानुवाच ।
हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि दिव्या ह्यात्मविभूतयः ।
प्राधान्यतः कुरुश्रेष्ठ नास्त्यन्तो विस्तरस्य मे ॥१९॥
19. śrībhagavānuvāca ,
hanta te kathayiṣyāmi divyā hyātmavibhūtayaḥ ,
prādhānyataḥ kuruśreṣṭha nāstyanto vistarasya me.
19. śrībhagavān uvāca hanta te kathayiṣyāmi divyāḥ hi ātma-vibhūtayaḥ
prādhānyataḥ kuruśreṣṭha na asti antaḥ vistarasya me
19. śrībhagavān uvāca kuruśreṣṭha hanta te divyāḥ hi ātma-vibhūtayaḥ
prādhānyataḥ kathayiṣyāmi me vistarasya antaḥ na asti
19. The Blessed Lord said: Now, O best among the Kurus, I will indeed describe to you My divine opulences (ātman-vibhūti), focusing on the principal ones, for there is no end to the full extent of My manifestations.
अहमात्मा गुडाकेश सर्वभूताशयस्थितः ।
अहमादिश्च मध्यं च भूतानामन्त एव च ॥२०॥
20. ahamātmā guḍākeśa sarvabhūtāśayasthitaḥ ,
ahamādiśca madhyaṁ ca bhūtānāmanta eva ca.
20. aham ātmā guḍākeśa sarvabhūtāśayasthitaḥ |
aham ādiḥ ca madhyam ca bhūtānām antaḥ eva ca
20. guḍākeśa aham sarvabhūtāśayasthitaḥ ātmā ca
aham bhūtānām ādiḥ madhyam ca antaḥ eva ca
20. O Guḍākeśa, I am the Self (ātman) residing within the consciousness of all beings. I am also the beginning, the middle, and the very end of all creatures.
आदित्यानामहं विष्णुर्ज्योतिषां रविरंशुमान् ।
मरीचिर्मरुतामस्मि नक्षत्राणामहं शशी ॥२१॥
21. ādityānāmahaṁ viṣṇurjyotiṣāṁ raviraṁśumān ,
marīcirmarutāmasmi nakṣatrāṇāmahaṁ śaśī.
21. ādityānām aham viṣṇuḥ jyotiṣām raviḥ aṃśumān
| marīciḥ marutām asmi nakṣatrāṇām aham śaśī
21. ādityānām aham viṣṇuḥ jyotiṣām (aham) aṃśumān
raviḥ marutām marīciḥ asmi nakṣatrāṇām aham śaśī
21. Among the sons of Aditi (Ādityas), I am Viṣṇu. Among the sources of light (jyotiṣām), I am the radiant sun (aṃśumān ravi). Among the storm gods (Maruts), I am Marīci. And among the stars (nakṣatrāṇām), I am the moon.
वेदानां सामवेदोऽस्मि देवानामस्मि वासवः ।
इन्द्रियाणां मनश्चास्मि भूतानामस्मि चेतना ॥२२॥
22. vedānāṁ sāmavedo'smi devānāmasmi vāsavaḥ ,
indriyāṇāṁ manaścāsmi bhūtānāmasmi cetanā.
22. vedānām sāmavedaḥ asmi devānām asmi vāsavaḥ |
indriyāṇām manaḥ ca asmi bhūtānām asmi cetanā
22. vedānām sāmavedaḥ asmi devānām vāsavaḥ asmi
ca indriyāṇām manaḥ asmi bhūtānām cetanā asmi
22. Among the Vedas, I am the Sāma Veda. Among the deities, I am Vāsava (Indra). Among the senses, I am the mind, and among all living beings, I am consciousness.
रुद्राणां शंकरश्चास्मि वित्तेशो यक्षरक्षसाम् ।
वसूनां पावकश्चास्मि मेरुः शिखरिणामहम् ॥२३॥
23. rudrāṇāṁ śaṁkaraścāsmi vitteśo yakṣarakṣasām ,
vasūnāṁ pāvakaścāsmi meruḥ śikhariṇāmaham.
23. rudrāṇām śaṅkaraḥ ca asmi vitteśaḥ yakṣarakṣasām
vasūnām pāvakaḥ ca asmi meruḥ śikhariṇām aham
23. rudrāṇām aham śaṅkaraḥ ca asmi yakṣarakṣasām vitteśaḥ
(asmi) vasūnām ca pāvakaḥ asmi śikhariṇām meruḥ (asmi)
23. Among the Rudras, I am Shankara, and among the Yakshas and Rakshasas, I am Kubera (the lord of wealth). Among the Vasus, I am Fire (Pavaka), and among peaked mountains, I am Meru.
पुरोधसां च मुख्यं मां विद्धि पार्थ बृहस्पतिम् ।
सेनानीनामहं स्कन्दः सरसामस्मि सागरः ॥२४॥
24. purodhasāṁ ca mukhyaṁ māṁ viddhi pārtha bṛhaspatim ,
senānīnāmahaṁ skandaḥ sarasāmasmi sāgaraḥ.
24. purodhasām ca mukhyam mām viddhi pārtha bṛhaspatim
senānīnām aham skandaḥ sarasām asmi sāgaraḥ
24. pārtha purodhasām ca mukhyam mām bṛhaspatim viddhi
senānīnām aham skandaḥ sarasām sāgaraḥ asmi
24. O Pārtha, know Me to be Bṛhaspati, the chief among priests. Among generals, I am Skanda, and among bodies of water, I am the ocean.
महर्षीणां भृगुरहं गिरामस्म्येकमक्षरम् ।
यज्ञानां जपयज्ञोऽस्मि स्थावराणां हिमालयः ॥२५॥
25. maharṣīṇāṁ bhṛgurahaṁ girāmasmyekamakṣaram ,
yajñānāṁ japayajño'smi sthāvarāṇāṁ himālayaḥ.
25. maharṣīṇām bhṛguḥ aham girām asmi ekam akṣaram
yajñānām japayajñaḥ asmi sthāvarāṇām himālayaḥ
25. maharṣīṇām aham bhṛguḥ (asmi) girām ekam akṣaram asmi
yajñānām japayajñaḥ asmi sthāvarāṇām himālayaḥ (asmi)
25. Among the great sages, I am Bhṛgu, and among words, I am the single, imperishable syllable (Om). Among forms of worship (yajña), I am the silent chanting (japayajña), and among immovable things, I am the Himalayas.
अश्वत्थः सर्ववृक्षाणां देवर्षीणां च नारदः ।
गन्धर्वाणां चित्ररथः सिद्धानां कपिलो मुनिः ॥२६॥
26. aśvatthaḥ sarvavṛkṣāṇāṁ devarṣīṇāṁ ca nāradaḥ ,
gandharvāṇāṁ citrarathaḥ siddhānāṁ kapilo muniḥ.
26. aśvatthaḥ sarvavṛkṣāṇām devarṣīṇām ca nāradaḥ
gandharvāṇām citrarathaḥ siddhānām kapilaḥ muniḥ
26. sarvavṛkṣāṇām (aham) aśvatthaḥ
(asmi) devarṣīṇām ca nāradaḥ (asmi)
gandharvāṇām citrarathaḥ (asmi)
siddhānām kapilaḥ muniḥ (asmi)
26. Among all trees, I am the sacred fig (Ashvattha), and among the divine sages, I am Narada. Among the Gandharvas, I am Chitraratha, and among the perfected beings (siddhas), I am the sage Kapila.
उच्चैःश्रवसमश्वानां विद्धि माममृतोद्भवम् ।
ऐरावतं गजेन्द्राणां नराणां च नराधिपम् ॥२७॥
27. uccaiḥśravasamaśvānāṁ viddhi māmamṛtodbhavam ,
airāvataṁ gajendrāṇāṁ narāṇāṁ ca narādhipam.
27. uccaiḥśravasam aśvānām viddhi mām amṛtodbhavam
airāvatam gajendrāṇām narāṇām ca narādhipam
27. mām aśvānām amṛtodbhavam uccaiḥśravasam viddhi
gajendrāṇām airāvatam ca narāṇām narādhipam
27. Know Me as Uccaiḥśravas among horses, who was born of nectar. Among the chief elephants, I am Airāvata, and among human beings, I am the king.
आयुधानामहं वज्रं धेनूनामस्मि कामधुक् ।
प्रजनश्चास्मि कन्दर्पः सर्पाणामस्मि वासुकिः ॥२८॥
28. āyudhānāmahaṁ vajraṁ dhenūnāmasmi kāmadhuk ,
prajanaścāsmi kandarpaḥ sarpāṇāmasmi vāsukiḥ.
28. āyudhānām aham vajram dhenūnām asmi kāmadhuk
prajanaḥ ca asmi kandarpaḥ sarpāṇām asmi vāsukiḥ
28. aham āyudhānām vajram dhenūnām kāmadhuk asmi ca
prajanaḥ kandarpaḥ asmi sarpāṇām vāsukiḥ asmi
28. Among weapons, I am the thunderbolt (vajra). Among cows, I am Kāmadhuk, the wish-fulfilling cow. I am also the progenitor, Kandarpa, the god of love. Among serpents, I am Vāsuki.
अनन्तश्चास्मि नागानां वरुणो यादसामहम् ।
पितॄणामर्यमा चास्मि यमः संयमतामहम् ॥२९॥
29. anantaścāsmi nāgānāṁ varuṇo yādasāmaham ,
pitṝṇāmaryamā cāsmi yamaḥ saṁyamatāmaham.
29. anantaḥ ca asmi nāgānām varuṇaḥ yādasām aham
pitṝṇām aryamā ca asmi yamaḥ saṃyamatām aham
29. nāgānām anantaḥ ca asmi yādasām varuṇaḥ aham

29. Among the Nāgas (divine serpents), I am Ananta. Among the aquatics, I am Varuṇa. Among the forefathers (pitṛ), I am Aryaman. Among those who restrain, I am Yama.
प्रह्लादश्चास्मि दैत्यानां कालः कलयतामहम् ।
मृगाणां च मृगेन्द्रोऽहं वैनतेयश्च पक्षिणाम् ॥३०॥
30. prahlādaścāsmi daityānāṁ kālaḥ kalayatāmaham ,
mṛgāṇāṁ ca mṛgendro'haṁ vainateyaśca pakṣiṇām.
30. prahlādaḥ ca asmi daityānām kālaḥ kalayatām aham
mṛgāṇām ca mṛgendraḥ aham vainateyaḥ ca pakṣiṇām
30. daityānām prahlādaḥ ca asmi aham kalayatām kālaḥ
mṛgāṇām ca mṛgendraḥ aham pakṣiṇām vainateyaḥ ca
30. Among the Daityas (demons), I am Prahlāda. Among those who measure or subdue, I am Time (kāla). Among animals, I am the lion, the king of beasts. And among birds, I am Vainateya (Garuḍa).
पवनः पवतामस्मि रामः शस्त्रभृतामहम् ।
झषाणां मकरश्चास्मि स्रोतसामस्मि जाह्नवी ॥३१॥
31. pavanaḥ pavatāmasmi rāmaḥ śastrabhṛtāmaham ,
jhaṣāṇāṁ makaraścāsmi srotasāmasmi jāhnavī.
31. pavanaḥ pavatām asmi rāmaḥ śastrabṛtām aham
jhaṣāṇām makaraḥ ca asmi srotasām asmi jāhnavī
31. aham pavatām pavanaḥ asmi,
śastrabṛtām rāmaḥ,
ca jhaṣāṇām makaraḥ asmi,
srotasām jāhnavī asmi
31. Among all that purifies, I am the wind (pavana). Among those who bear weapons, I am Rama. Among aquatic creatures (jhaṣāṇām), I am the makara, and among rivers, I am the Ganga.
सर्गाणामादिरन्तश्च मध्यं चैवाहमर्जुन ।
अध्यात्मविद्या विद्यानां वादः प्रवदतामहम् ॥३२॥
32. sargāṇāmādirantaśca madhyaṁ caivāhamarjuna ,
adhyātmavidyā vidyānāṁ vādaḥ pravadatāmaham.
32. sargāṇām ādiḥ antaḥ ca madhyam ca eva aham arjuna
adhyātmavidyā vidyānām vādaḥ pravadatām aham
32. arjuna,
aham eva sargāṇām ādiḥ ca madhyam ca antaḥ.
aham vidyānām adhyātmavidyā,
(aham) pravadatām vādaḥ
32. Arjuna, among all creations, I am the beginning, the middle, and also the end. Among all forms of knowledge (vidyā), I am the science of the Self (adhyātmavidyā), and among those who speak (pravadatām), I am the logical discourse (vāda).
अक्षराणामकारोऽस्मि द्वंद्वः सामासिकस्य च ।
अहमेवाक्षयः कालो धाताहं विश्वतोमुखः ॥३३॥
33. akṣarāṇāmakāro'smi dvaṁdvaḥ sāmāsikasya ca ,
ahamevākṣayaḥ kālo dhātāhaṁ viśvatomukhaḥ.
33. akṣarāṇām akāraḥ asmi dvandvaḥ sāmāsikasya ca
aham eva akṣayaḥ kālaḥ dhātā aham viśvatomukhaḥ
33. aham akṣarāṇām akāraḥ asmi,
ca sāmāsikasya dvandvaḥ.
aham eva akṣayaḥ kālaḥ.
aham viśvatomukhaḥ dhātā
33. Among letters (akṣara), I am the letter 'A' (akāra). Among grammatical compounds, I am the copulative (dvandva) compound. I am indeed imperishable (akṣaya) time (kāla), and I am the all-faced (viśvatomukha) sustainer (dhātā).
मृत्युः सर्वहरश्चाहमुद्भवश्च भविष्यताम् ।
कीर्तिः श्रीर्वाक्च नारीणां स्मृतिर्मेधा धृतिः क्षमा ॥३४॥
34. mṛtyuḥ sarvaharaścāhamudbhavaśca bhaviṣyatām ,
kīrtiḥ śrīrvākca nārīṇāṁ smṛtirmedhā dhṛtiḥ kṣamā.
34. mṛtyuḥ sarvahāraḥ ca aham udbhavaḥ ca bhaviṣyatām
kīrtiḥ śrīḥ vāk ca nārīṇām smṛtiḥ medhā dhṛtiḥ kṣamā
34. aham ca sarvahāraḥ mṛtyuḥ,
ca bhaviṣyatām udbhavaḥ.
nārīṇām kīrtiḥ śrīḥ vāk ca smṛtiḥ medhā dhṛtiḥ kṣamā
34. I am all-devouring death (mṛtyu), and I am the origin (udbhava) of all future beings. Among feminine qualities (nārīṇām), I am fame (kīrti), prosperity (śrī), speech (vāc), memory (smṛti), intelligence (medhā), fortitude (dhṛti), and patience (kṣamā).
बृहत्साम तथा साम्नां गायत्री छन्दसामहम् ।
मासानां मार्गशीर्षोऽहमृतूनां कुसुमाकरः ॥३५॥
35. bṛhatsāma tathā sāmnāṁ gāyatrī chandasāmaham ,
māsānāṁ mārgaśīrṣo'hamṛtūnāṁ kusumākaraḥ.
35. bṛhatsāma tathā sāmnām gāyatrī chandasām aham
māsānām mārgaśīrṣaḥ aham ṛtūnām kusumākaraḥ
35. aham sāmnām bṛhatsāma tathā chandasām gāyatrī
aham māsānām mārgaśīrṣaḥ ṛtūnām kusumākaraḥ
35. I am the Bṛhat-sāman among the sāmans (Vedic chants), and the Gāyatrī among the meters. Among months, I am Mārgaśīrṣa, and among seasons, I am spring.
द्यूतं छलयतामस्मि तेजस्तेजस्विनामहम् ।
जयोऽस्मि व्यवसायोऽस्मि सत्त्वं सत्त्ववतामहम् ॥३६॥
36. dyūtaṁ chalayatāmasmi tejastejasvināmaham ,
jayo'smi vyavasāyo'smi sattvaṁ sattvavatāmaham.
36. dyūtam chalayatām asmi tejaḥ tejasvinām aham jayaḥ
asmi vyavasāyaḥ asmi sattvam sattvavatām aham
36. aham chalayatām dyūtam asmi tejasvinām tejaḥ jayaḥ
asmi vyavasāyaḥ asmi sattvavatām sattvam aham
36. Among those who deceive, I am gambling. I am the radiance of the radiant. I am victory, I am determination, and I am the inner strength (sattva) of the strong.
वृष्णीनां वासुदेवोऽस्मि पाण्डवानां धनंजयः ।
मुनीनामप्यहं व्यासः कवीनामुशना कविः ॥३७॥
37. vṛṣṇīnāṁ vāsudevo'smi pāṇḍavānāṁ dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
munīnāmapyahaṁ vyāsaḥ kavīnāmuśanā kaviḥ.
37. vṛṣṇīnām vāsudevaḥ asmi pāṇḍavānām dhanaṃjayaḥ
munīnām api aham vyāsaḥ kavīnām uśanā kaviḥ
37. aham vṛṣṇīnām vāsudevaḥ asmi pāṇḍavānām
dhanaṃjayaḥ api munīnām vyāsaḥ kavīnām uśanā kaviḥ
37. Among the Vṛṣṇis, I am Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa). Among the Pāṇḍavas, I am Dhanañjaya (Arjuna). Among the sages, I am Vyāsa, and among the poets, I am Uśanā, the sage.
दण्डो दमयतामस्मि नीतिरस्मि जिगीषताम् ।
मौनं चैवास्मि गुह्यानां ज्ञानं ज्ञानवतामहम् ॥३८॥
38. daṇḍo damayatāmasmi nītirasmi jigīṣatām ,
maunaṁ caivāsmi guhyānāṁ jñānaṁ jñānavatāmaham.
38. daṇḍaḥ damayatām asmi nītiḥ asmi jigīṣatām maunam
ca eva asmi guhyānām jñānam jñānavatām aham
38. aham damayatām daṇḍaḥ asmi jigīṣatām nītiḥ asmi
ca eva guhyānām maunam asmi jñānavatām jñānam
38. Among those who subdue, I am punishment (daṇḍa). I am the political wisdom (nīti) of those who seek victory. Among secrets, I am silence, and among the wise, I am knowledge.
यच्चापि सर्वभूतानां बीजं तदहमर्जुन ।
न तदस्ति विना यत्स्यान्मया भूतं चराचरम् ॥३९॥
39. yaccāpi sarvabhūtānāṁ bījaṁ tadahamarjuna ,
na tadasti vinā yatsyānmayā bhūtaṁ carācaram.
39. yat ca api sarva-bhūtānām bījam tat aham Arjuna
| na tat asti vinā yat syāt mayā bhūtam carācaram
39. Arjuna,
yat ca api sarva-bhūtānām bījam,
tat aham.
mayā vinā yat carācaram bhūtam syāt,
tat na asti.
39. O Arjuna, I am the seed (bīja) of all beings. There is nothing, moving or non-moving, that can exist without Me.
नान्तोऽस्ति मम दिव्यानां विभूतीनां परंतप ।
एष तूद्देशतः प्रोक्तो विभूतेर्विस्तरो मया ॥४०॥
40. nānto'sti mama divyānāṁ vibhūtīnāṁ paraṁtapa ,
eṣa tūddeśataḥ prokto vibhūtervistaro mayā.
40. na antaḥ asti mama divyānām vibhūtīnām paraṃtapa
| eṣaḥ tu uddeśataḥ proktaḥ vibhūteḥ vistaraḥ mayā
40. paraṃtapa,
mama divyānām vibhūtīnām antaḥ na asti.
tu eṣaḥ vibhūteḥ vistaraḥ mayā uddeśataḥ proktaḥ.
40. O scorcher of foes (paraṃtapa), there is no limit to My divine opulences (vibhūti). This description of My opulence has been recounted by Me only by way of example.
यद्यद्विभूतिमत्सत्त्वं श्रीमदूर्जितमेव वा ।
तत्तदेवावगच्छ त्वं मम तेजोंशसंभवम् ॥४१॥
41. yadyadvibhūtimatsattvaṁ śrīmadūrjitameva vā ,
tattadevāvagaccha tvaṁ mama tejoṁśasaṁbhavam.
41. yat yat vibhūtimat sattvam śrīmat ūrjitam eva vā |
tat tat eva avagaccha tvam mama tejaḥ-aṃśa-saṃbhavam
41. tvam yat yat vibhūtimat sattvam śrīmat ūrjitam eva vā,
tat tat eva mama tejaḥ-aṃśa-saṃbhavam avagaccha.
41. Whatever being (sattva) is glorious, prosperous (śrīmat), or energized with power—know that alone to have arisen from a mere spark of My splendor (tejas).
अथ वा बहुनैतेन किं ज्ञातेन तवार्जुन ।
विष्टभ्याहमिदं कृत्स्नमेकांशेन स्थितो जगत् ॥४२॥
42. atha vā bahunaitena kiṁ jñātena tavārjuna ,
viṣṭabhyāhamidaṁ kṛtsnamekāṁśena sthito jagat.
42. atha vā bahunā etena kim jñātena tava Arjuna |
viṣṭabhya aham idam kṛtsnam eka-aṃśena sthitaḥ jagat
42. Arjuna,
atha vā etena bahunā jñātena tava kim? aham idam kṛtsnam jagat eka-aṃśena viṣṭabhya sthitaḥ.
42. Or what is the use of this extensive knowledge to you, O Arjuna? I pervade and sustain this entire universe (jagat) with merely a fraction of My being.
