अर्जुन उवाच ।
मदनुग्रहाय परमं गुह्यमध्यात्मसंज्ञितम् ।
यत्त्वयोक्तं वचस्तेन मोहोऽयं विगतो मम ॥१॥

1. arjuna uvāca ,
madanugrahāya paramaṁ guhyamadhyātmasaṁjñitam ,
yattvayoktaṁ vacastena moho'yaṁ vigato mama.

Arjuna said: My delusion (moha) has now been dispelled by those supreme and secret words related to the Self (ātman) that You spoke for my benefit.
भवाप्ययौ हि भूतानां श्रुतौ विस्तरशो मया ।
त्वत्तः कमलपत्राक्ष माहात्म्यमपि चाव्ययम् ॥२॥

2. bhavāpyayau hi bhūtānāṁ śrutau vistaraśo mayā ,
tvattaḥ kamalapatrākṣa māhātmyamapi cāvyayam.

bhavāpyayau hi bhūtānām śrutau vistaraśaḥ mayā
tvattaḥ kamalapattrākṣa māhātmyam api ca avyayam

kamalapattrākṣa hi mayā tvattaḥ bhūtānām bhavāpyayau vistaraśaḥ śrutau,
api ca avyayam māhātmyam (śrutam)
api ca avyayam māhātmyam (śrutam)

Oh lotus-eyed one (kamalapattrākṣa)! Indeed, I have heard in detail from You about the origin and dissolution of all beings, and also Your imperishable greatness (māhātmya).
एवमेतद्यथात्थ त्वमात्मानं परमेश्वर ।
द्रष्टुमिच्छामि ते रूपमैश्वरं पुरुषोत्तम ॥३॥

3. evametadyathāttha tvamātmānaṁ parameśvara ,
draṣṭumicchāmi te rūpamaiśvaraṁ puruṣottama.

evam etat yathā āttha tvam ātmānam parameśvara
draṣṭum icchāmi te rūpam aiśvaram puruṣottama

parameśvara puruṣottama,
tvam ātmānam yathā āttha,
etat evam asti.
(aham) te aiśvaram rūpam draṣṭum icchāmi.
tvam ātmānam yathā āttha,
etat evam asti.
(aham) te aiśvaram rūpam draṣṭum icchāmi.

O Supreme Lord (parameśvara)! O Supreme Person (puruṣottama)! It is exactly as You have declared Yourself (ātman) to be. I desire to see Your divine (aiśvaram) form.
मन्यसे यदि तच्छक्यं मया द्रष्टुमिति प्रभो ।
योगेश्वर ततो मे त्वं दर्शयात्मानमव्ययम् ॥४॥

4. manyase yadi tacchakyaṁ mayā draṣṭumiti prabho ,
yogeśvara tato me tvaṁ darśayātmānamavyayam.

manyase yadi tat śakyam mayā draṣṭum iti prabho
yogeśvara tataḥ me tvam darśaya ātmānam avyayam

prabho yogeśvara,
yadi mayā tat draṣṭum śakyam iti tvam manyase,
tataḥ tvam me avyayam ātmānam darśaya.
yadi mayā tat draṣṭum śakyam iti tvam manyase,
tataḥ tvam me avyayam ātmānam darśaya.
4.
O Lord (prabho)! O Master of (yoga) (yogeśvara)! If You think that it is possible for me to see (draṣṭum) it, then You show me Your imperishable (avyayam) Self (ātman).
श्रीभगवानुवाच ।
पश्य मे पार्थ रूपाणि शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ।
नानाविधानि दिव्यानि नानावर्णाकृतीनि च ॥५॥
पश्य मे पार्थ रूपाणि शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ।
नानाविधानि दिव्यानि नानावर्णाकृतीनि च ॥५॥

paśya me pārtha rūpāṇi śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ ,
nānāvidhāni divyāni nānāvarṇākṛtīni ca.

nānāvidhāni divyāni nānāvarṇākṛtīni ca.

me śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ nānāvidhāni divyāni nānāvarṇākṛtīni ca rūpāṇi paśya.

The Blessed Lord said: "Behold, son of Pṛthā (Arjuna), My forms, by hundreds and thousands, of diverse kinds, divine, and of various colors and shapes."
पश्यादित्यान्वसून्रुद्रानश्विनौ मरुतस्तथा ।
बहून्यदृष्टपूर्वाणि पश्याश्चर्याणि भारत ॥६॥

6. paśyādityānvasūnrudrānaśvinau marutastathā ,
bahūnyadṛṣṭapūrvāṇi paśyāścaryāṇi bhārata.

vasūn,

aśvinau,
tathā marutaḥ,
bahūni adṛṣṭapūrvāṇi āścaryāṇi ca paśya.

6.
Behold the Ādityas, Vasus, Rudras, the two Aśvins, and the Maruts. See, O descendant of Bharata (Arjuna), many wonders never seen before.
इहैकस्थं जगत्कृत्स्नं पश्याद्य सचराचरम् ।
मम देहे गुडाकेश यच्चान्यद्द्रष्टुमिच्छसि ॥७॥
मम देहे गुडाकेश यच्चान्यद्द्रष्टुमिच्छसि ॥७॥
7. ihaikasthaṁ jagatkṛtsnaṁ paśyādya sacarācaram ,
mama dehe guḍākeśa yaccānyaddraṣṭumicchasi.

iha ekasthaṃ jagat kṛtsnaṃ paśya adya sacarācaram

guḍākeśa,
adya iha mama dehe ekasthaṃ sacarācaram kṛtsnaṃ jagat,
ca yat anyat draṣṭum icchasi paśya.
adya iha mama dehe ekasthaṃ sacarācaram kṛtsnaṃ jagat,
ca yat anyat draṣṭum icchasi paśya.

Behold now, O Guḍākeśa (Arjuna), the entire universe—with all its moving and non-moving beings—abiding in one place within My body, and whatever else you wish to see.
न तु मां शक्यसे द्रष्टुमनेनैव स्वचक्षुषा ।
दिव्यं ददामि ते चक्षुः पश्य मे योगमैश्वरम् ॥८॥

8. na tu māṁ śakyase draṣṭumanenaiva svacakṣuṣā ,
divyaṁ dadāmi te cakṣuḥ paśya me yogamaiśvaram.

na tu mām śakyase draṣṭum anena eva svacakṣuṣā
divyam dadāmi te cakṣuḥ paśya me yogam aiśvaram

tu,
anena eva svacakṣuṣā mām draṣṭum na śakyase.
te divyam cakṣuḥ dadāmi.
me aiśvaram yogam paśya.
anena eva svacakṣuṣā mām draṣṭum na śakyase.
te divyam cakṣuḥ dadāmi.
me aiśvaram yogam paśya.
8.
But you are not able to see Me with this very own eye. I give you a divine eye; behold My supreme (aiśvara) mystic power (yoga).
संजय उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा ततो राजन्महायोगेश्वरो हरिः ।
दर्शयामास पार्थाय परमं रूपमैश्वरम् ॥९॥
एवमुक्त्वा ततो राजन्महायोगेश्वरो हरिः ।
दर्शयामास पार्थाय परमं रूपमैश्वरम् ॥९॥
9. saṁjaya uvāca ,
evamuktvā tato rājanmahāyogeśvaro hariḥ ,
darśayāmāsa pārthāya paramaṁ rūpamaiśvaram.

darśayāmāsa pārthāya paramaṁ rūpamaiśvaram.

sañjaya uvāca evam uktvā tataḥ rājan mahāyogeśvaraḥ
hariḥ darśayāmāsa pārthāya paramam rūpam aiśvaram

hariḥ mahāyogeśvaraḥ evam uktvā tataḥ pārthāya paramam aiśvaram rūpam darśayāmāsa
hariḥ mahāyogeśvaraḥ evam uktvā tataḥ pārthāya paramam aiśvaram rūpam darśayāmāsa

Sañjaya said: O King, having spoken thus, Hari, the great Lord of yoga (mahāyogeśvara), then revealed His supreme, divine form to Pārtha.
अनेकवक्त्रनयनमनेकाद्भुतदर्शनम् ।
अनेकदिव्याभरणं दिव्यानेकोद्यतायुधम् ॥१०॥
अनेकदिव्याभरणं दिव्यानेकोद्यतायुधम् ॥१०॥
10. anekavaktranayanamanekādbhutadarśanam ,
anekadivyābharaṇaṁ divyānekodyatāyudham.

That form possessed countless mouths and eyes, revealed innumerable wondrous sights, was adorned with many divine ornaments, and wielded numerous divine, uplifted weapons.
दिव्यमाल्याम्बरधरं दिव्यगन्धानुलेपनम् ।
सर्वाश्चर्यमयं देवमनन्तं विश्वतोमुखम् ॥११॥
सर्वाश्चर्यमयं देवमनन्तं विश्वतोमुखम् ॥११॥
11. divyamālyāmbaradharaṁ divyagandhānulepanam ,
sarvāścaryamayaṁ devamanantaṁ viśvatomukham.

Adorned with divine garlands and raiments, and anointed with celestial fragrances, that form was entirely wondrous, truly divine (deva), infinite (ananta), and had faces in every direction (viśvatomukha).
दिवि सूर्यसहस्रस्य भवेद्युगपदुत्थिता ।
यदि भाः सदृशी सा स्याद्भासस्तस्य महात्मनः ॥१२॥
यदि भाः सदृशी सा स्याद्भासस्तस्य महात्मनः ॥१२॥
12. divi sūryasahasrasya bhavedyugapadutthitā ,
yadi bhāḥ sadṛśī sā syādbhāsastasya mahātmanaḥ.
yadi bhāḥ sadṛśī sā syādbhāsastasya mahātmanaḥ.

divi sūryasahasrasya bhavet yugapat utthitā yadi
bhāḥ sadṛśī sā syāt bhāsaḥ tasya mahātmanaḥ
bhāḥ sadṛśī sā syāt bhāsaḥ tasya mahātmanaḥ

yadi divi sūryasahasrasya bhāḥ yugapat utthitā bhavet,
sā tasya mahātmanaḥ bhāsaḥ sadṛśī syāt
sā tasya mahātmanaḥ bhāsaḥ sadṛśī syāt

If the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst forth simultaneously in the sky, that brilliance would be comparable to the splendor of that great being (mahātman).
तत्रैकस्थं जगत्कृत्स्नं प्रविभक्तमनेकधा ।
अपश्यद्देवदेवस्य शरीरे पाण्डवस्तदा ॥१३॥

13. tatraikasthaṁ jagatkṛtsnaṁ pravibhaktamanekadhā ,
apaśyaddevadevasya śarīre pāṇḍavastadā.

tatra ekastham jagat kṛtsnam pravibhaktam
anekadhā apaśyat devadevasya śarīre pāṇḍavaḥ tadā

tadā pāṇḍavaḥ tatra devadevasya śarīre ekastham
anekadhā pravibhaktam kṛtsnam jagat apaśyat
anekadhā pravibhaktam kṛtsnam jagat apaśyat
13.
At that time, Arjuna (pāṇḍava) saw there, within the body of the God of gods, the entire universe, situated in one place, yet diversified in many forms.
ततः स विस्मयाविष्टो हृष्टरोमा धनंजयः ।
प्रणम्य शिरसा देवं कृताञ्जलिरभाषत ॥१४॥

14. tataḥ sa vismayāviṣṭo hṛṣṭaromā dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
praṇamya śirasā devaṁ kṛtāñjalirabhāṣata.

tataḥ saḥ vismayāviṣṭaḥ hṛṣṭaromā dhanañjayaḥ

tataḥ saḥ dhanañjayaḥ vismayāviṣṭaḥ hṛṣṭaromā

Then Arjuna (dhanañjaya), filled with astonishment (vismayāviṣṭa) and with his hair standing on end (hṛṣṭaromā), bowed his head to the divine being and, with folded hands (kṛtāñjali), began to speak.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
पश्यामि देवांस्तव देव देहे सर्वांस्तथा भूतविशेषसंघान् ।
ब्रह्माणमीशं कमलासनस्थमृषींश्च सर्वानुरगांश्च दिव्यान् ॥१५॥
पश्यामि देवांस्तव देव देहे सर्वांस्तथा भूतविशेषसंघान् ।
ब्रह्माणमीशं कमलासनस्थमृषींश्च सर्वानुरगांश्च दिव्यान् ॥१५॥
15. arjuna uvāca ,
paśyāmi devāṁstava deva dehe; sarvāṁstathā bhūtaviśeṣasaṁghān ,
brahmāṇamīśaṁ kamalāsanastha;mṛṣīṁśca sarvānuragāṁśca divyān.
paśyāmi devāṁstava deva dehe; sarvāṁstathā bhūtaviśeṣasaṁghān ,
brahmāṇamīśaṁ kamalāsanastha;mṛṣīṁśca sarvānuragāṁśca divyān.

arjunaḥ uvāca paśyāmi devān tava
deva dehe sarvān tathā bhūtaviśeṣasaṅghān
brahmāṇam īśam kamalāsanastham
ṛṣīn ca sarvān uragān ca divyān
deva dehe sarvān tathā bhūtaviśeṣasaṅghān
brahmāṇam īśam kamalāsanastham
ṛṣīn ca sarvān uragān ca divyān
15.
arjunaḥ uvāca deva tava dehe sarvān
devān tathā bhūtaviśeṣasaṅghān
kamalāsanastham brahmāṇam īśam ca
sarvān ṛṣīn ca divyān uragān paśyāmi
devān tathā bhūtaviśeṣasaṅghān
kamalāsanastham brahmāṇam īśam ca
sarvān ṛṣīn ca divyān uragān paśyāmi
15.
Arjuna said: O divine being (deva), I behold in your body all the gods, as well as the hosts of distinct beings, Brahmā, the Lord (īśa), seated on the lotus (kamalāsanastha), and all the sages (ṛṣi), and the celestial serpents.
अनेकबाहूदरवक्त्रनेत्रं पश्यामि त्वा सर्वतोऽनन्तरूपम् ।
नान्तं न मध्यं न पुनस्तवादिं पश्यामि विश्वेश्वर विश्वरूप ॥१६॥
नान्तं न मध्यं न पुनस्तवादिं पश्यामि विश्वेश्वर विश्वरूप ॥१६॥
16. anekabāhūdaravaktranetraṁ; paśyāmi tvā sarvato'nantarūpam ,
nāntaṁ na madhyaṁ na punastavādiṁ; paśyāmi viśveśvara viśvarūpa.
nāntaṁ na madhyaṁ na punastavādiṁ; paśyāmi viśveśvara viśvarūpa.

anekabāhūdaravaktranetram paśyāmi
tvā sarvataḥ anantarūpam na
antam na madhyam na punaḥ tava
ādim paśyāmi viśveśvara viśvarūpa
tvā sarvataḥ anantarūpam na
antam na madhyam na punaḥ tava
ādim paśyāmi viśveśvara viśvarūpa
16.
viśveśvara viśvarūpa tvā sarvataḥ
anekabāhūdaravaktranetram
anantarūpam paśyāmi tava antam na
madhyam na punaḥ ādim na paśyāmi
anekabāhūdaravaktranetram
anantarūpam paśyāmi tava antam na
madhyam na punaḥ ādim na paśyāmi
16.
I behold you everywhere, O possessor of the universal form (viśvarūpa), with countless arms, stomachs, mouths, and eyes, and of infinite forms (anantarūpa). I perceive no beginning, no middle, and no end to you, O Lord of the universe (viśveśvara).
किरीटिनं गदिनं चक्रिणं च तेजोराशिं सर्वतो दीप्तिमन्तम् ।
पश्यामि त्वां दुर्निरीक्ष्यं समन्ताद्दीप्तानलार्कद्युतिमप्रमेयम् ॥१७॥
पश्यामि त्वां दुर्निरीक्ष्यं समन्ताद्दीप्तानलार्कद्युतिमप्रमेयम् ॥१७॥
17. kirīṭinaṁ gadinaṁ cakriṇaṁ ca; tejorāśiṁ sarvato dīptimantam ,
paśyāmi tvāṁ durnirīkṣyaṁ samantā;ddīptānalārkadyutimaprameyam.
paśyāmi tvāṁ durnirīkṣyaṁ samantā;ddīptānalārkadyutimaprameyam.

kirīṭinam gadinam cakriṇam ca
tejorāśim sarvataḥ dīptimantam
paśyāmi tvāṃ durnirīkṣyam samantāt
dīpta anala arka dyutim aprameyam
tejorāśim sarvataḥ dīptimantam
paśyāmi tvāṃ durnirīkṣyam samantāt
dīpta anala arka dyutim aprameyam
17.
aham tvāṃ kirīṭinam gadinam cakriṇam
ca tejorāśim sarvataḥ dīptimantam
samantāt durnirīkṣyam dīpta
anala arka dyutim aprameyam paśyāmi
ca tejorāśim sarvataḥ dīptimantam
samantāt durnirīkṣyam dīpta
anala arka dyutim aprameyam paśyāmi
17.
I behold You, adorned with a crown, wielding a mace and a discus, a mass of brilliance, radiant from all directions. You are difficult to perceive from all sides, possessing the effulgence of blazing fire and the sun, and You are immeasurable.
त्वमक्षरं परमं वेदितव्यं त्वमस्य विश्वस्य परं निधानम् ।
त्वमव्ययः शाश्वतधर्मगोप्ता सनातनस्त्वं पुरुषो मतो मे ॥१८॥
त्वमव्ययः शाश्वतधर्मगोप्ता सनातनस्त्वं पुरुषो मतो मे ॥१८॥
18. tvamakṣaraṁ paramaṁ veditavyaṁ; tvamasya viśvasya paraṁ nidhānam ,
tvamavyayaḥ śāśvatadharmagoptā; sanātanastvaṁ puruṣo mato me.
tvamavyayaḥ śāśvatadharmagoptā; sanātanastvaṁ puruṣo mato me.
18.
tvam akṣaram paramam veditavyam
tvam asya viśvasya param nidhānam
tvam avyayaḥ śāśvata dharma
goptā sanātanaḥ tvam puruṣaḥ mataḥ me
tvam asya viśvasya param nidhānam
tvam avyayaḥ śāśvata dharma
goptā sanātanaḥ tvam puruṣaḥ mataḥ me
18.
tvam akṣaram paramam veditavyam.
tvam asya viśvasya param nidhānam.
tvam avyayaḥ śāśvata dharma goptā.
tvam sanātanaḥ puruṣaḥ me mataḥ.
tvam asya viśvasya param nidhānam.
tvam avyayaḥ śāśvata dharma goptā.
tvam sanātanaḥ puruṣaḥ me mataḥ.
18.
You are the imperishable (akṣara), the supreme object of knowledge. You are the ultimate foundation of this universe. You are the immutable, the protector of the eternal natural law (dharma). In my view, You are the everlasting supreme cosmic person (puruṣa).
अनादिमध्यान्तमनन्तवीर्यमनन्तबाहुं शशिसूर्यनेत्रम् ।
पश्यामि त्वां दीप्तहुताशवक्त्रं स्वतेजसा विश्वमिदं तपन्तम् ॥१९॥
पश्यामि त्वां दीप्तहुताशवक्त्रं स्वतेजसा विश्वमिदं तपन्तम् ॥१९॥
19. anādimadhyāntamanantavīrya;manantabāhuṁ śaśisūryanetram ,

I behold You who are without beginning, middle, or end, possessing infinite valor, with countless arms, and whose eyes are the moon and the sun. I see You, whose mouth is blazing fire, scorching this entire universe with Your inherent radiance.
द्यावापृथिव्योरिदमन्तरं हि व्याप्तं त्वयैकेन दिशश्च सर्वाः ।

Indeed, this entire space between heaven and earth, and all directions, is completely pervaded by You alone. O great soul (mahātman), having beheld this wondrous and terrifying form of Yours, the three worlds are greatly distressed.
अमी हि त्वा सुरसंघा विशन्ति केचिद्भीताः प्राञ्जलयो गृणन्ति ।
स्वस्तीत्युक्त्वा महर्षिसिद्धसंघाः स्तुवन्ति त्वां स्तुतिभिः पुष्कलाभिः ॥२१॥

Indeed, these hosts of gods enter You, while some, filled with fear, praise You with folded hands. The hosts of great sages and perfected beings (siddhas), after declaring "May there be well-being!", praise You with abundant hymns.
रुद्रादित्या वसवो ये च साध्या विश्वेऽश्विनौ मरुतश्चोष्मपाश्च ।
गन्धर्वयक्षासुरसिद्धसंघा वीक्षन्ते त्वा विस्मिताश्चैव सर्वे ॥२२॥

The Rudras, Ādityas, Vasus, and Sādhyas, along with the Viśvedevas, the two Aśvins, the Maruts, and Uṣmapās, as well as the hosts of Gandharvas, Yakṣas, Asuras, and perfected beings (siddhas)—all of them gaze upon You, indeed astonished.
रूपं महत्ते बहुवक्त्रनेत्रं महाबाहो बहुबाहूरुपादम् ।
बहूदरं बहुदंष्ट्राकरालं दृष्ट्वा लोकाः प्रव्यथितास्तथाहम् ॥२३॥

O mighty-armed one, seeing Your magnificent form—with many mouths and eyes, many arms, thighs, and feet, many bellies, and terrible fangs—the worlds are distressed, and so am I.
नभःस्पृशं दीप्तमनेकवर्णं व्यात्ताननं दीप्तविशालनेत्रम् ।
दृष्ट्वा हि त्वां प्रव्यथितान्तरात्मा धृतिं न विन्दामि शमं च विष्णो ॥२४॥

O Viṣṇu, having seen You, who touch the sky, blazing with many colors, with gaping mouths and shining, vast eyes, my inner self (ātman) is greatly agitated, and I find neither steadfastness nor peace.

दिशो न जाने न लभे च शर्म प्रसीद देवेश जगन्निवास ॥२५॥

Having seen Your mouths, which are terrible with fangs and resemble the fire of ultimate dissolution, I do not know the directions, nor do I find peace. Be gracious, O Lord of gods, Abode of the universe.

And all these sons of Dhritarashtra, along with the hosts of kings, as well as Bhishma, Drona, that son of Suta (Karna), and also our own chief warriors.
वक्त्राणि ते त्वरमाणा विशन्ति दंष्ट्राकरालानि भयानकानि ।
केचिद्विलग्ना दशनान्तरेषु संदृश्यन्ते चूर्णितैरुत्तमाङ्गैः ॥२७॥

tvaramāṇāḥ te daṃṣṭrākarālāni bhayānakāni vaktrāṇi viśanti.
kecit daśanāntareṣu vilagnāḥ cūrṇitaiḥ uttamāṅgaiḥ saṃdṛśyante.
kecit daśanāntareṣu vilagnāḥ cūrṇitaiḥ uttamāṅgaiḥ saṃdṛśyante.
27.
Rushing swiftly, they enter Your mouths, which are terrible with fangs and frightful. Some are seen trapped between Your teeth, with their heads crushed.
यथा नदीनां बहवोऽम्बुवेगाः समुद्रमेवाभिमुखा द्रवन्ति ।
तथा तवामी नरलोकवीरा विशन्ति वक्त्राण्यभिविज्वलन्ति ॥२८॥

28.
Just as the many currents of rivers flow directly towards the ocean, so too do these heroes of the human world enter Your intensely blazing mouths.
यथा प्रदीप्तं ज्वलनं पतंगा विशन्ति नाशाय समृद्धवेगाः ।
तथैव नाशाय विशन्ति लोकास्तवापि वक्त्राणि समृद्धवेगाः ॥२९॥

29. yathā pradīptaṁ jvalanaṁ pataṁgā; viśanti nāśāya samṛddhavegāḥ ,

29.
Just as moths, with accelerated speed, enter a blazing fire for their destruction, so too do these people, with accelerated speed, enter even Your mouths for their destruction.
लेलिह्यसे ग्रसमानः समन्ताल्लोकान्समग्रान्वदनैर्ज्वलद्भिः ।
तेजोभिरापूर्य जगत्समग्रं भासस्तवोग्राः प्रतपन्ति विष्णो ॥३०॥

30. lelihyase grasamānaḥ samantā;llokānsamagrānvadanairjvaladbhiḥ ,

viṣṇo tvam jvaladbhiḥ vadanaiḥ samantāt

lelihyase tvam tejobhiḥ samagraṃ jagat
āpūrya tava ugrāḥ bhāsaḥ pratapanti
samagrān lokān grasamānaḥ

30.
O Viṣṇu, You are licking and devouring all the worlds from all sides with Your blazing mouths. Your fierce splendors (bhāsaḥ) scorch, filling the entire universe with radiance (tejobhiḥ).
आख्याहि मे को भवानुग्ररूपो नमोऽस्तु ते देववर प्रसीद ।
विज्ञातुमिच्छामि भवन्तमाद्यं न हि प्रजानामि तव प्रवृत्तिम् ॥३१॥

31. ākhyāhi me ko bhavānugrarūpo; namo'stu te devavara prasīda ,
vijñātumicchāmi bhavantamādyaṁ; na hi prajānāmi tava pravṛttim.

ākhyāhi me kaḥ bhavān ugrarūpaḥ
namaḥ astu te devavara prasīda

ugrarūpaḥ bhavān kaḥ me ākhyāhi
devavara te namaḥ astu prasīda
ādyaṃ bhavantaṃ vijñātum icchāmi
hi tava pravṛttiṃ na prajānāmi

ādyaṃ bhavantaṃ vijñātum icchāmi

31.
Tell me who You are, You of such a fearsome form. Salutations to You, O best of gods; be gracious. I wish to understand You, the primordial (ādyam) one, for I do not comprehend Your actions (pravṛttim).
श्रीभगवानुवाच ।
कालोऽस्मि लोकक्षयकृत्प्रवृद्धो लोकान्समाहर्तुमिह प्रवृत्तः ।
ऋतेऽपि त्वा न भविष्यन्ति सर्वे येऽवस्थिताः प्रत्यनीकेषु योधाः ॥३२॥
कालोऽस्मि लोकक्षयकृत्प्रवृद्धो लोकान्समाहर्तुमिह प्रवृत्तः ।

kālo'smi lokakṣayakṛtpravṛddho; lokānsamāhartumiha pravṛttaḥ ,
ṛte'pi tvā na bhaviṣyanti sarve; ye'vasthitāḥ pratyanīkeṣu yodhāḥ.

śrībhagavān uvāca ahaṃ kālaḥ asmi lokakṣayakṛt
pravṛddhaḥ ca lokān samāhartum iha
pravṛttaḥ tvā ṛte api ye sarve yodhāḥ
pratyanīkeṣu avasthitāḥ te na bhaviṣyanti
pravṛddhaḥ ca lokān samāhartum iha
pravṛttaḥ tvā ṛte api ye sarve yodhāḥ
pratyanīkeṣu avasthitāḥ te na bhaviṣyanti
32.
The Blessed Lord said: 'I am Time (kālaḥ), the mighty destroyer of worlds, and I have come forth here to annihilate all people. Even without your action, all the warriors arrayed in these opposing armies will cease to exist.'
तस्मात्त्वमुत्तिष्ठ यशो लभस्व जित्वा शत्रून्भुङ्क्ष्व राज्यं समृद्धम् ।
मयैवैते निहताः पूर्वमेव निमित्तमात्रं भव सव्यसाचिन् ॥३३॥
मयैवैते निहताः पूर्वमेव निमित्तमात्रं भव सव्यसाचिन् ॥३३॥
33. tasmāttvamuttiṣṭha yaśo labhasva; jitvā śatrūnbhuṅkṣva rājyaṁ samṛddham ,

Therefore, rise up, achieve glory, and having conquered your enemies, enjoy a prosperous kingdom. These (warriors) have already been slain by Me. Be merely an instrument, O Savyasācin (Arjuna).
द्रोणं च भीष्मं च जयद्रथं च कर्णं तथान्यानपि योधवीरान् ।
मया हतांस्त्वं जहि मा व्यथिष्ठा युध्यस्व जेतासि रणे सपत्नान् ॥३४॥

Slay Droṇa, Bhīṣma, Jayadratha, Karṇa, and all those other heroic warriors who have already been slain by Me. Do not be distressed. Fight, and you will surely conquer your adversaries in battle.
संजय उवाच ।
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं केशवस्य कृताञ्जलिर्वेपमानः किरीटी ।
नमस्कृत्वा भूय एवाह कृष्णं सगद्गदं भीतभीतः प्रणम्य ॥३५॥

Sañjaya said: Having heard these words from Keśava (Krishna), Kirīṭī (Arjuna), with folded hands, trembling, and deeply terrified, bowed down to Krishna, and then, with a choked voice, spoke to Him again.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
स्थाने हृषीकेश तव प्रकीर्त्या जगत्प्रहृष्यत्यनुरज्यते च ।
रक्षांसि भीतानि दिशो द्रवन्ति सर्वे नमस्यन्ति च सिद्धसंघाः ॥३६॥

36.
Arjuna said: Rightly, O Hṛṣīkeśa (Krishna), the entire world rejoices and becomes devoted by Your glorification. The demons (rakṣāṃsi), struck with fear, flee in all directions, and all the hosts of perfected beings (siddhasaṅghāḥ) bow down to You.
कस्माच्च ते न नमेरन्महात्मन्गरीयसे ब्रह्मणोऽप्यादिकर्त्रे ।
अनन्त देवेश जगन्निवास त्वमक्षरं सदसत्तत्परं यत् ॥३७॥

O great soul (mahātman), why indeed should they not bow down to You, who are even greater than Brahmā, the original creator? O Endless One (ananta), Lord of gods (deveśa), Abode of the universe (jagannivāsa), You are the imperishable (akṣaram), the existent and the non-existent, and that which transcends (para) both.
त्वमादिदेवः पुरुषः पुराणस्त्वमस्य विश्वस्य परं निधानम् ।
वेत्तासि वेद्यं च परं च धाम त्वया ततं विश्वमनन्तरूप ॥३८॥

You are the primordial God (ādideva), the ancient (purāṇa) cosmic person (puruṣa). You are the supreme ultimate support (nidhānam) of this universe. You are the knower, the knowable, and the transcendent (para) abode. By You, O form of infinite forms (anantarūpa), this entire universe is pervaded.
वायुर्यमोऽग्निर्वरुणः शशाङ्कः प्रजापतिस्त्वं प्रपितामहश्च ।
नमो नमस्तेऽस्तु सहस्रकृत्वः पुनश्च भूयोऽपि नमो नमस्ते ॥३९॥

39. vāyuryamo'gnirvaruṇaḥ śaśāṅkaḥ; prajāpatistvaṁ prapitāmahaśca ,

You are Vāyu, Yama, Agni, Varuṇa, the Moon (śaśāṅka), Prajāpati, and the great-grandfather (prapitāmaha). Salutations, salutations to You a thousand times! And again, yet again, salutations, salutations to You!
नमः पुरस्तादथ पृष्ठतस्ते नमोऽस्तु ते सर्वत एव सर्व ।
अनन्तवीर्यामितविक्रमस्त्वं सर्वं समाप्नोषि ततोऽसि सर्वः ॥४०॥

40. namaḥ purastādatha pṛṣṭhataste; namo'stu te sarvata eva sarva ,
anantavīryāmitavikramastvaṁ; sarvaṁ samāpnoṣi tato'si sarvaḥ.

Salutations to You from the front, and from behind! Salutations to You from every side, O All! O You of infinite valor (anantavīrya) and immeasurable might (amitavikrama), You pervade all, and therefore You are everything.
सखेति मत्वा प्रसभं यदुक्तं हे कृष्ण हे यादव हे सखेति ।
अजानता महिमानं तवेदं मया प्रमादात्प्रणयेन वापि ॥४१॥

41. sakheti matvā prasabhaṁ yaduktaṁ; he kṛṣṇa he yādava he sakheti ,

mayā sakhā iti matvā,
tava idam mahimānam ajānatā,
yat prasabham he kṛṣṇa,

he sakhā iti uktam,
(tat) pramādāt vā praṇayena api (kṣamaye tvām)
tava idam mahimānam ajānatā,
yat prasabham he kṛṣṇa,
he yādava,
he sakhā iti uktam,

41.
Thinking of You as a friend, whatever I may have impetuously uttered—'O Kṛṣṇa, O Yādava, O friend'—was done by me, not knowing this greatness of Yours, either through carelessness or even out of affection.
यच्चावहासार्थमसत्कृतोऽसि विहारशय्यासनभोजनेषु ।
एकोऽथ वाप्यच्युत तत्समक्षं तत्क्षामये त्वामहमप्रमेयम् ॥४२॥

42. yaccāvahāsārthamasatkṛto'si; vihāraśayyāsanabhojaneṣu ,
eko'tha vāpyacyuta tatsamakṣaṁ; tatkṣāmaye tvāmahamaprameyam.
eko'tha vāpyacyuta tatsamakṣaṁ; tatkṣāmaye tvāmahamaprameyam.
42.
yat ca avahāsa artham asatkṛtaḥ
asi vihāra śayyā āsana bhojaneṣu

tat kṣāmaye tvām aham aprameyam
asi vihāra śayyā āsana bhojaneṣu

42.
yat ca avahāsa artham asatkṛtaḥ asi,
vihāra śayyā āsana bhojaneṣu,
ekaḥ atha vā api,
acyuta,
tat samakṣam (kṛtam),
tat aprameyam tvām aham kṣāmaye.
vihāra śayyā āsana bhojaneṣu,
ekaḥ atha vā api,

42.
And whatever disrespect I showed You for the purpose of jest (avahāsārtham)—whether during recreation, while resting on a bed, seated, or at meals—alone, or, O Acyuta, in the presence of others—for all that, I seek forgiveness from You, the immeasurable (aprameyam) one.
पितासि लोकस्य चराचरस्य त्वमस्य पूज्यश्च गुरुर्गरीयान् ।
न त्वत्समोऽस्त्यभ्यधिकः कुतोऽन्यो लोकत्रयेऽप्यप्रतिमप्रभाव ॥४३॥

43. pitāsi lokasya carācarasya; tvamasya pūjyaśca gururgarīyān ,
na tvatsamo'styabhyadhikaḥ kuto'nyo; lokatraye'pyapratimaprabhāva.

pitā asi lokasya carācarasya tvam
asya pūjyaḥ ca guruḥ garīyān na tvat

tvam asya carācarasya lokasya pitā asi.

You are the father of this world, both moving and unmoving. You are also its most venerable and revered teacher (guru). There is no one equal to You; how then could there be anyone superior in the three worlds, O You of incomparable power (prabhāva)?
तस्मात्प्रणम्य प्रणिधाय कायं प्रसादये त्वामहमीशमीड्यम् ।
पितेव पुत्रस्य सखेव सख्युः प्रियः प्रियायार्हसि देव सोढुम् ॥४४॥

44. tasmātpraṇamya praṇidhāya kāyaṁ; prasādaye tvāmahamīśamīḍyam ,
piteva putrasya sakheva sakhyuḥ; priyaḥ priyāyārhasi deva soḍhum.

44.
tasmāt,
kāyam praṇamya praṇidhāya,
īḍyam īśam tvām aham prasādaye.

44.
Therefore, having bowed down and prostrated my body, I seek Your grace, O adorable Lord (īśa). You should tolerate me, O Lord, just as a father tolerates a son, a friend tolerates a friend, or a lover tolerates his beloved.
अदृष्टपूर्वं हृषितोऽस्मि दृष्ट्वा भयेन च प्रव्यथितं मनो मे ।
तदेव मे दर्शय देव रूपं प्रसीद देवेश जगन्निवास ॥४५॥

45. adṛṣṭapūrvaṁ hṛṣito'smi dṛṣṭvā; bhayena ca pravyathitaṁ mano me ,

I am thrilled to have seen what was never seen before, yet my mind is also greatly agitated by fear. Therefore, O God, O Lord of gods, O Abode of the universe, please show me that original form. Be gracious.
किरीटिनं गदिनं चक्रहस्तमिच्छामि त्वां द्रष्टुमहं तथैव ।
तेनैव रूपेण चतुर्भुजेन सहस्रबाहो भव विश्वमूर्ते ॥४६॥

46. kirīṭinaṁ gadinaṁ cakrahasta;micchāmi tvāṁ draṣṭumahaṁ tathaiva ,

I wish to see You just as before, wearing a crown, holding a mace, and having a discus in hand. O You of a thousand arms, O Universal Form, please manifest Yourself with that very same four-armed form.

मया प्रसन्नेन तवार्जुनेदं रूपं परं दर्शितमात्मयोगात् ।
तेजोमयं विश्वमनन्तमाद्यं यन्मे त्वदन्येन न दृष्टपूर्वम् ॥४७॥

tejomayaṁ viśvamanantamādyaṁ; yanme tvadanyena na dṛṣṭapūrvam.

47.
The Blessed Lord said: "O Arjuna, by Me, being pleased, this supreme form has been shown to you through My own mystic power (yoga)—a radiant, universal, infinite, and primeval form, which has never been seen before by anyone other than you."
न वेदयज्ञाध्ययनैर्न दानैर्न च क्रियाभिर्न तपोभिरुग्रैः ।
एवंरूपः शक्य अहं नृलोके द्रष्टुं त्वदन्येन कुरुप्रवीर ॥४८॥

48. na vedayajñādhyayanairna dānai;rna ca kriyābhirna tapobhirugraiḥ ,
evaṁrūpaḥ śakya ahaṁ nṛloke; draṣṭuṁ tvadanyena kurupravīra.

48.

kurupravīra nṛloke aham evaṃrūpaḥ
tvat anyena na śakyaḥ draṣṭum
na vedayajñādhyayanaiḥ na dānaiḥ
ca na kriyābhiḥ na ugraiḥ tapobhiḥ
tvat anyena na śakyaḥ draṣṭum
na vedayajñādhyayanaiḥ na dānaiḥ
ca na kriyābhiḥ na ugraiḥ tapobhiḥ
48.
In the human world, I cannot be seen in such a form by anyone other than you, O best of the Kurus, not by studying the Vedas or performing sacrifices (yajña), nor by giving charity (dāna), nor by rituals, nor by severe austerities (tapas).
मा ते व्यथा मा च विमूढभावो दृष्ट्वा रूपं घोरमीदृङ्ममेदम् ।
व्यपेतभीः प्रीतमनाः पुनस्त्वं तदेव मे रूपमिदं प्रपश्य ॥४९॥
व्यपेतभीः प्रीतमनाः पुनस्त्वं तदेव मे रूपमिदं प्रपश्य ॥४९॥
49. mā te vyathā mā ca vimūḍhabhāvo; dṛṣṭvā rūpaṁ ghoramīdṛṅmamedam ,
vyapetabhīḥ prītamanāḥ punastvaṁ; tadeva me rūpamidaṁ prapaśya.

49.
Let no distress or bewilderment be yours, having seen this terrible form of Mine, such as it is. Again, free from fear and with a cheerful mind, you may behold that very form of Mine.
संजय उवाच ।
इत्यर्जुनं वासुदेवस्तथोक्त्वा स्वकं रूपं दर्शयामास भूयः ।
आश्वासयामास च भीतमेनं भूत्वा पुनः सौम्यवपुर्महात्मा ॥५०॥
इत्यर्जुनं वासुदेवस्तथोक्त्वा स्वकं रूपं दर्शयामास भूयः ।

50. saṁjaya uvāca ,
ityarjunaṁ vāsudevastathoktvā; svakaṁ rūpaṁ darśayāmāsa bhūyaḥ ,
āśvāsayāmāsa ca bhītamenaṁ; bhūtvā punaḥ saumyavapurmahātmā.

sañjayaḥ uvāca.
vāsudevaḥ mahātmā iti arjunam tathā uktvā punaḥ saumyavapuḥ bhūtvā bhūyaḥ svakam rūpam darśayāmāsa ca enam bhītam āśvāsayāmāsa

Sañjaya said: Having thus spoken to Arjuna, Vāsudeva (Kṛṣṇa) again showed His own form. And the great soul (mahātmā), having again assumed a gentle form, comforted this frightened (Arjuna).
अर्जुन उवाच ।
दृष्ट्वेदं मानुषं रूपं तव सौम्यं जनार्दन ।
इदानीमस्मि संवृत्तः सचेताः प्रकृतिं गतः ॥५१॥
दृष्ट्वेदं मानुषं रूपं तव सौम्यं जनार्दन ।
इदानीमस्मि संवृत्तः सचेताः प्रकृतिं गतः ॥५१॥
51. arjuna uvāca ,
dṛṣṭvedaṁ mānuṣaṁ rūpaṁ tava saumyaṁ janārdana ,
idānīmasmi saṁvṛttaḥ sacetāḥ prakṛtiṁ gataḥ.
dṛṣṭvedaṁ mānuṣaṁ rūpaṁ tava saumyaṁ janārdana ,
idānīmasmi saṁvṛttaḥ sacetāḥ prakṛtiṁ gataḥ.

arjunaḥ uvāca dṛṣṭvā idam mānuṣam rūpam tava saumyam
janārdana idānīm asmi saṃvṛttaḥ sacetāḥ prakṛtim gataḥ

arjunaḥ uvāca.
janārdana tava idam saumyam mānuṣam rūpam dṛṣṭvā idānīm asmi saṃvṛttaḥ sacetāḥ prakṛtim gataḥ
janārdana tava idam saumyam mānuṣam rūpam dṛṣṭvā idānīm asmi saṃvṛttaḥ sacetāḥ prakṛtim gataḥ
51.
Arjuna said: O Janārdana, having seen this gentle human form of Yours, I am now composed, with a clear mind, and restored to my natural state (prakṛti).
श्रीभगवानुवाच ।
सुदुर्दर्शमिदं रूपं दृष्टवानसि यन्मम ।
देवा अप्यस्य रूपस्य नित्यं दर्शनकाङ्क्षिणः ॥५२॥
सुदुर्दर्शमिदं रूपं दृष्टवानसि यन्मम ।
देवा अप्यस्य रूपस्य नित्यं दर्शनकाङ्क्षिणः ॥५२॥
52. śrībhagavānuvāca ,
sudurdarśamidaṁ rūpaṁ dṛṣṭavānasi yanmama ,
devā apyasya rūpasya nityaṁ darśanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ.
sudurdarśamidaṁ rūpaṁ dṛṣṭavānasi yanmama ,
devā apyasya rūpasya nityaṁ darśanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ.

śrībhagavān uvāca sudurdarśam idam rūpam dṛṣṭavān asi
yat mama devāḥ api asya rūpasya nityam darśanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ

yat mama idam sudurdarśam rūpam dṛṣṭavān asi.
devāḥ api asya rūpasya nityam darśanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ

devāḥ api asya rūpasya nityam darśanakāṅkṣiṇaḥ
52.
The Supreme Lord (Śrī Bhagavān) said: This form of Mine that you have seen is exceedingly difficult to behold. Even the gods are constantly desirous of seeing this very form.
नाहं वेदैर्न तपसा न दानेन न चेज्यया ।
शक्य एवंविधो द्रष्टुं दृष्टवानसि मां यथा ॥५३॥

53. nāhaṁ vedairna tapasā na dānena na cejyayā ,

I cannot be seen in this form—as you have seen Me—through Vedic study, nor through austerity (tapas), nor through charity (dāna), nor through sacrifice.
भक्त्या त्वनन्यया शक्य अहमेवंविधोऽर्जुन ।
ज्ञातुं द्रष्टुं च तत्त्वेन प्रवेष्टुं च परंतप ॥५४॥
ज्ञातुं द्रष्टुं च तत्त्वेन प्रवेष्टुं च परंतप ॥५४॥
54. bhaktyā tvananyayā śakya ahamevaṁvidho'rjuna ,
jñātuṁ draṣṭuṁ ca tattvena praveṣṭuṁ ca paraṁtapa.

54.
bhaktyā tu ananyayā śakya aham evaṃvidhaḥ arjuna
jñātum draṣṭum ca tattvena praveṣṭum ca paraṃtapa

Arjuna paraṃtapa,
tu aham evaṃvidhaḥ ananyayā bhaktyā tattvena jñātum draṣṭum ca praveṣṭum ca śakyaḥ
tu aham evaṃvidhaḥ ananyayā bhaktyā tattvena jñātum draṣṭum ca praveṣṭum ca śakyaḥ
54.
But, O Arjuna, O scorcher of foes (paraṃtapa), I can be truly known, seen, and entered into in this form only through exclusive devotion (bhakti).
मत्कर्मकृन्मत्परमो मद्भक्तः सङ्गवर्जितः ।
निर्वैरः सर्वभूतेषु यः स मामेति पाण्डव ॥५५॥
निर्वैरः सर्वभूतेषु यः स मामेति पाण्डव ॥५५॥
55. matkarmakṛnmatparamo madbhaktaḥ saṅgavarjitaḥ ,
nirvairaḥ sarvabhūteṣu yaḥ sa māmeti pāṇḍava.

Pāṇḍava,
yaḥ mat-karma-kṛt,
mat-paramaḥ,
mat-bhaktaḥ,
saṅga-varjitaḥ,
sarva-bhūteṣu nirvairaḥ saḥ mām eti
yaḥ mat-karma-kṛt,
mat-paramaḥ,
mat-bhaktaḥ,
saṅga-varjitaḥ,
sarva-bhūteṣu nirvairaḥ saḥ mām eti
55.
O Pāṇḍava, the one who performs actions (karma) for Me, who considers Me the supreme goal, who is My devotee (bhakta), who is free from attachment, and who is without enmity towards all beings—that person comes to Me.
