योगवासिष्ठः       yogavāsiṣṭhaḥ - book-7, chapter-167, verse-45

नो वाच्यवाचकदृशा रहितो विचारः संपद्यते स च विकल्पमयेन सिद्ध्यै ।
सिद्धिश्च संभवति तेन विना न काचि द्दीपं विना निशि यथा नयनोपलम्भः ॥ ४५ ॥

An inquiry (vicāra) devoid of the perspective of the denoted and the denoter does not arise, and that inquiry (vicāra) becomes effective for realization (siddhi) through the use of mental constructs (vikalpa). Furthermore, no realization (siddhi) whatsoever is possible without that (inquiry through mental constructs), just as visual perception (nayanopalambha) is not possible at night without a lamp.
