श्रीवसिष्ठ उवाच ।
आकाशः शब्दतन्मात्रं स्पर्शतन्मात्रकोऽनिलः ।
तत्सङ्गोत्कर्षजं तेजस्तच्छान्तिश्चेत्यपां स्थितिः ॥ १ ॥

Śrī Vasiṣṭha said: Space (ākāśa) is the subtle essence of sound. Air (anila) is the subtle essence of touch. Fire (tejas) is produced from the intensified combination of these (sound and touch, or space and air). And the cessation (śānti) of these (qualities leading to a state of quietude) is the intrinsic nature (dharma) of water.
